Well they had a few Nintendo Easter eggs in the MGS remake: Mario and Yoshi figures, GameCube console. Guess this is just another one of those eggs! I wonder if you can actually use it as an item though? Distract the enemy, like a Playboy mag does. Would be a nice addition!

The Yoshi doll was already in Twin snakes in Otacon's lab, where you fight the Ninja (along with a Mario doll, a purple Gamecube and a Wavebird wireless GC controller). I think Hideo Kojima being a fan of the green dino is the reason why it was included this time around as well Smilie.

Maybe if you shoot the Yoshi doll, it still makes a yoshi sound XD.

Is Square Enix having a conference? Can't find any info.

I wonder if MGS HD collection will be on the N6? I mean, maybe they'll announce it at the Nintendo conference with it also containing The Twin Snakes as an extra.

Yoshi doll rocks!

The thought of having MGS TT, 2, 3, 4 and Peace maker on the N6 would be amazing. Even more, if it was a launch title Smilie

That would probably be the perfect opportunity for someone like me, who hasn't really played a MGS game yet, to dive into the franchise. Smilie

OK.. the wait for E3 is just killing me. So close.. yet so far. Smilie

GameTrailers will have a live interview with Reggie after the show.

Wouldn't mind seeing Rockstar's 'Agent' this year. They announced it years ago, but have shown nothing of it (yet still insist it's in active development).

I have one question and one question only... Why the Yoshi doll? o.O

As Azuardo says, there were a few Nintendo props in MGS: Twin Snakes on GameCube. However, what he and others have missed (presumably due to not having played MGS3?) is that Yoshi probably replaces the Kerotan Frogs from the original and Subsistence versions.

There are 64 of these hidden throughout the game. If you shoot them all, you unlock the stealth camouflage (Predator-like invisibility) on that save file for your next play through. It is one of two ways of getting that camo.

I actually did this on Subsistence on my PS2. It's fucking difficult, but easier than finishing the entire game in under four minutes with a Big Boss final ranking. Kind of an interesting dual-route to the unlock. Rush like a rapist running from police, or really take your damn time searching every nook and cranny in the game for a frog.

Protip: You can do this without guides. There's pretty much one frog/Yoshi per area.

Protip 2: At the end of the game when you're cruising down the runway with EVA, there lies the hardest frog to shoot. He sits atop a sign that you buzz past. If you miss him, KILL YOURSELF IMMEDIATELY (in the gameSmilie ) with explosives.

Woe betide reaching the next checkpoint (which is only just up the road) without having hit the frog. You will lose the chance to do so again, thus rendering your whole 'get every frog' run a giant waste of time. Believe me - you will have spent a lot of time locating all the froggies/Yoshis!

Christ, now you see, I hate shit like that in games sometimes. Fair enough if you want to make it difficult for people to get all these frogs, but screwing you over with one stupidly-placed one that's totally missable and almost forcing you to start from scratch again is just a big eff you in the face.

I do like how they used Yoshi's original sound effect from Mario World too. I wonder if they will use different colour Yoshis throughout the game, or use his other voice changes for other Yoshi dolls (remember how each Yoshi in Yoshi's Story had a slightly different voice?)?

Also. Why aren't the HD collection MGS ports the Substance/Subsistence versions?

Yup! In fairness, it wouldn't make your run a total waste of time, for (on the PS2 at least) frogs that you have shot are 'remembered' on your next run, even if you didn't get them all. So if all you missed was that last one, and you carried on to the end, then all you will have to get on your next play is the one you missed.

Who knows? Would be grand, although Yoshi is known to the masses as being green. I reckon for each one to be a different colour, that'd be too much. There aren't 64 colours, unless they get into mediating shades of each colour. I actually think they will use the different colours, but not on each one. I think colours will be assigned to general areas. So green Yoshis for the marshes, black Yoshis in the warehouses, etc.

That is if I'm right and that the Yoshi in the trailer does replace a frog, and that in turn all frogs are replaced with Yoshis. It's only an educated guess on my part, owing to the fact that in the trailer Yoshi is sitting in the exact sort of spot you got frogs in. Seemed the right sort of size through Snake's binoculars.

They are. And in 1080p at 60fps, no less!

Oh, cool. I assumed by the title of the games they were the original versions. But it probably sounds better to use the original names and to include the extras of the Substance/Subsistence games.

Think it's strange MGS1 isn't included though. People were guessing a Cafe version would reveal The Twin Snakes as part of the collection but I don't know about that. PS3/360 fanboys would cry.

I still haven't played my Snake Eater which I picked up for a fiver about a year or so ago. But tbh, I doubt I'll fork out for the HD versions, as good as they'll probably be.

I wonder how the NGP-PS3 thing will work. Will you have to buy the game twice? All these collections being announced makes the inner fanboy in me giddy for a PS2 FF collection... and part of me almost thinks it will happen. I'm willing to bet Square will disappoint though.

I wonder; would we be having all these collections if the PS3 could play PS2 games? Maybe. Can't work out if this is just companies trying to make a quick buck instead of putting all their resources into brand new titles, or to just tie them over whilst they do work on their next big ones (e.g. Konami to try and gain some dosh to put towards MGS5). But you could also look at it that it's a way for new players to get in on titles they never had the chance to play.

Good to hear about the MGS HD collection having substance and subsistence. Was a bit worried they'd just stick the original editions in xD

It is, but only for PS3 owners. Said version includes a voucher to download MGS1 at no additional cost from the PSone Classics section of the store.

PS3/360 fanboys, maybe. MGS fanboys, no. Twin Snakes is not considered canon, as it was not made by Hideo Kojima. Several things were changed, and while everyone liked the graphical upgrade, MGS fans didn't much like how the classic was ruined in a lot of ways (Fox' original voice ftw). I cite Twin Snakes whenever I'm trying to tell people why a remake of FFVII might not be the second coming they hoped for.

If you already own it, you'd be a madman to buy it again on PS3/360/3DS. The latter doesn't even have two sticks, so controls will be worst on that platform by default. I'm betting it sticks with vanilla-MGS3 camera angles in order to get around that. Subsistence was all about moving the camera around, and you did that with the right stick (like in most 3rd person games).

Just depends on how you look at it, and how jaded you're feeling at any given moment. You feel like shit, convinced the world hates you, and hey presto - the corporates are being their usual money laundering selves. You're feeling good, everything is rosy - it's an opportunity for newcomers to experience what they've missed.

I'm tempted by MGS3 at 1080p/60fps, but if I was going to get any PS2-era collection, it would certainly be the Ico/SotC one. MGS games are not something I particularly like to 'own'. I've played them all through once, and have felt no need to return to any of them bar the first game. Whereas owning Ico and Shadow of the Colossus is like owning paintings.

I'm fortunate enough to have never really played Ico/SotC, so that is one collection I am looking forward to. Every other collection doesn't really appeal to me.

So you can get MGS1 with the collection, but it's still not being upgraded like the others, and it seems MGS2 is not the Substance version. Wonder what their reasons are for that.

Having played both MGS1 and MGS:TT, I prefered the twin snakes. Yes, there's the thing about Fox's voice plus the ending theme, but inspite of that I still think its better.

The cutscenes were awesome - thanks to the master that is Ryuhei Kitamura Smilie

Not sure about MGS2. If not, then all you're missing is VR missions. There were no gameplay additions. I'd wonder if Metal Gear 1&2 will be included, as they were in MGS3 Subsistence.

Regarding MGS1, all the voice acting is far superior in the original game than the GC remake, Twin Snakes ruins some boss fights with it's new mechanics. Etc etc. There's a lot of reasons why Twin Snakes just isn't as good of a game as the original.

I do find it odd that they aren't including MGS1 on disc. Perhaps that'd cut into sales of the PSone Classic on PSN? I don't know. What they should have done (in an ideal world) is port over the PC version of MGS1 (which I have).

It's utterly identical to the PSone version, except it includes a whole campaign where you play as Fox, has somewhat better textures, and obviously runs in a choice of native resolutions. That would have been the best outcome.

Microsoft conference is at 5pm today. Is anyone watching it? I'll be in the C3 ICR chat room around that time.

Doesn't interest me but I might whack it on for the sake of it.

I'll be watching it and probably chilling in the C3 IRC chat room as well. Smilie Simply out of curiosity.

I'm still finding it a shame that I can't watch Sony's conference live which would certainly interest me more than Microsoft's. I need to find a site where I can view the conference tomorrow noon without getting my face blasted by spoilers before I get there. Smilie Sony and/or Microsoft don't have their own live stream where you can also watch it later on, do they?

Spoiler-free NeoGAF E3 2011 thread
This might be the best place for you then.

I probably won't bother with the MS conference, I don't have a 360 and I doubt they'll announce much (if anything) for the PC other than maybe a taste of DX12 on Windows 8 (if that).

I won't be watching the Sony Conference either since it'll be 1 in the morning and I've got a Maths Exam at 10 the same day. But I'll definitely be watching Nintendo's.

Wow, that's perfect. Thanks a bunch mate. SmilieSmilie

Now the only thing I have to watch out for is a friend, who's sitting next to me in school, looking up all the stuff from Sony's conference tomorrow morning. Smilie To be completely safe I theoretically could go to sleep early and get up 2 hours early in the morning and watch it there but that seems to be a little bit too much of an effort as I don't even own a PS3 or a PSP. Smilie

@Stulaw: It's always kinda worth watching all 3 because you'll get all the insider jokes that pop up later. Smilie

The lack of excitement on C3 for E3 this year disappoints me. Hopefully the IRC will pick up later, like previous years. Smilie
