Fire Emblem: Awakening 3DS May Have Been the Last

Fire Emblem: Awakening 3DS May Have Been the Last on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

In an interview with the development team behind Fire Emblem: Awakening, it was revealed the 3DS game could have been the last.

Despite having a strong following within the Nintendo community, sales of past games have perhaps been less than Nintendo had expected. The franchise does have a relatively more niche following compared to more recognisable names and with that in mind "the sales manager of Nintendo, Mr. Hatano, told us that this could be the last Fire Emblem", confirmed Hitoshi Yamagami in an interview.

He continued, "they told us that if the sales of this episode stayed below 250,000 copies, we'd stop working on Fire Emblem." With Awakening potentially being the last, the team "had to put everything we always wanted to include".

Fortunately for Nintendo and developer Intelligent Systems, the game has been a solid success on Nintendo 3DS so far, opening the doors wide open for a sequel or Wii U version at the very least.

The next Fire Emblem project is a unique cross-over project, Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem.

Selling over 1.2 million pieces of DLC for an additional $4.8 million (in just Japan) probably helped too.

Retail sales totaled $30.6 million in Japan.

Now I know why the game was so flippin' amazing...

Thank god I didn't hear this much earlier, I would have gone into panic mode. There's nothing quite like Fire Emblem out there and I would have been devastated if this ended up being the last one. I guess this is why it's such a masterpiece, they really did a "Final Fantasy" for this game. It just goes to show what amazing things can be created under a lot of pressure.

I'm so glad it all paid off, the game sold around 250,000 copies in the US alone and revitalised the series everywhere, much needed after two remakes. Here's to the crossover and Fire Emblem 14, even though I have no idea how they could possibly top Awakening...

Maybe if they'd always put this much effort in the series wouldn't have been struggling. I've never been hyped for the DS or Wii versions, but this one seemed like an absolute must have just from the press and marketing.

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

Such a stellar Nintendo series, long may it live!

They'd have no one but themselves to blame if sales forced them to cancel the series. The DS releases were nothing short of disappointing. Thin remakes that barely even touched the potential of the series. Frankly, based on the work they put into the DS series, they deserved failure with the 3DS game.

They're fortunate that Awakening was such a fantastic game. They nearly killed the series with awful DS remakes.

The reason it's seeing so much success now is truly thanks to the fact that they pulled all the stops and included everything they wanted and could fit in, methinks. And frankly, seeing how it incoporates elements from absolutely all the episodes, you can sort of feel that they did it as if it was going to be the last.

Fortunately it won't, but I will reassert what I said in the Cubed3 review: It'll be hard to top this, next time.
