However, with three console bundles, different controllers, accessories and a whole heap of games, where do you start?

1) What is the difference between Nintendo Wii U and Wii?

Image for Feature | Nintendo Wii U Buyer

First and foremost, the Wii U is a brand new video games console. The Wii U isn't an add-on to the Wii, but a separate machine that plays new high-definition games that only work on the Wii U.

The Wii U does play existing Wii games and accessories, however, including Wii Remotes, wheels, Balance Board and all disc-based games.

Think of the difference between the Apple iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 -- it's faster, more immersive, plays the latest games but can also run all your old favourites.

The Wii U comprises of the base unit that runs the games, provides the apps and does all the nifty calculations, and a new controller included with the console called the GamePad.

2) What is the Nintendo Wii U GamePad?

Image for Feature | Nintendo Wii U Buyer

The Game Pad is a small tablet controller with a 6.2-inch touchscreen, built-in microphone, camera and speakers. Think of it as a hybrid between a small Apple iPad or tablet and a videogame controller. One of them comes included with every Wii U.

The GamePad has regular buttons and analogue sticks for traditional play, but also a touchscreen and motion sensors for different ways of playing. You can tap on touchscreen, swipe, draw, and rotate the GamePad like a wheel.

What makes the GamePad different is that it shows an image on the screen, but also on the TV at the same time. The TV can show the main game, for example a football match, whilst the smaller screen on the GamePad could show statistics about each player, allowing you to manage the team at the same time. In Cubed3's play-tests, it has proven to be perfect in terms of accuracy, responsiveness and durability.

For most Wii U games, the GamePad also lets players use it as a portable screen -- freeing up the TV and keeping the peace in busy households!

The GamePad is currently not compatible with older Wii games, so you will need Wii Remotes and Nunchucks (or even Classic Controllers!) to play these on the Wii U.

3) What accessories are available?

The Wii U GamePad can be used by multiple players taking turns, or a single player, but to make the most of the different games, additional Wii Remotes and  Nunchucks are advised.

The Wii U is compatible with existing Wii Remotes and Nunchucks, and additional sets can be purchased for those without them.

A separate, optional controller is compatible with various Wii U games for multiplayer called the Wii U Pro. It boasts the same buttons as the GamePad, but without the touchscreen, speakers, and so on. The Wii U Pro is advised for more traditional games -- shooting, adventure games, and many others.

It's recommended to check if the Wii U Pro controller is compatible with specific titles. It is currently not compatible with old Wii games and a standard Classic Controller or Classic Controller PRO may need to be used for those.

There are also optional microphones, console and GamePad stands available, plus compatible wired headsets for online video and voice chat using the GamePad controller.

4) Can I just use my old Wii Remotes?

The Wii U includes the GamePad controller as standard, but for some games a Wii Remote and Nunchuck might be required so don't shelve the old controllers just yet!

All Wii Remotes, Nunchucks, steering wheels, Balance Board, and so on, can be used with both Wii U games and old Wii games. The more the merrier!

5) What about the Wii U games?

There is plenty of choice available to new Wii U owners, from the popular New Super Mario Bros U. for five players, to Sports Connection, and from Nintendo Land to ZombiU. The Wii U has options for both new and seasoned players. Older Wii software can be played on Wii U.

6) Can I surf the Internet or play online with Nintendo Wii U?

Nintendo has improved online communication and play on the Wii U. An update has to be downloaded onto the new console, however it contains a web browser, YouTube app (due December 2012), integrated video chat and individual user accounts for each member of a household.

The Wii U online service is free (providing there is wireless Internet access in the home). Additional download content and premium features are also available at an optional extra cost.

Mum can have her own settings and Internet favourites, whilst a young one could have parental controls in place.

7) Why not choose a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360?

There are many positives behind the Wii U, but why invest in a Nintendo console instead of sticking to a Sony PlayStation 3 or Microsoft's Xbox 360?

8) Is the Nintendo Wii U future-proof?

Unless you drown the Nintendo Wii U in a bucket or fling it out of an open window, it is a balanced, powerful and cost-effective setup to last and provide entertainment for years to come. There are a growing number of games on the way, including sublime, high-definition games from Nintendo itself.

9) What are the tech specs?

You don't get Nintendo Land with it, though, do you? Not sure why the game logo is in that pic.

Hello Cubed. Why should I get a "Wii U 32GB Pack Black" instead of getting the "Wii U 8GB Pack White" for my son he is 12?

Depends on if you're looking to get him a game at the same time, plus it has more storage if he downloads games. Either way, both have the same controller - one is white, the other comes in black.

I would recommend the White probably if he's not going to download much.

I think the question of the Wii U being future proof will be answered when we see specs for the PS4 and the next 360.

Just looked around and you definitely don't. Shame, I would've moved my preorder over. Smilie

Looking at the exponential costs of development this gen, it would be business suicide for MS and Sony to create powerful behemoths again. I'll enjoy the overreactions when they reveal their next machines to be slightly upgraded insides with advanced Kinect and Move Controllers. Smilie

Aww.  I would have been so jelly.  I'da been all "say WAAAAT" and you guys would be all "word, cheers mate".

The difference between Wii and Wii U is like the difference between iPhone 4 and 5?

    I cancelled my pre-order. Smilie

Will Wii microphones work with the WiiU?  I want Sing Party but if I can use my 3 Wii microphones then I will just get the game and not the bundle.

Look unto me in every thought. Doubt not. Fear not.

I think I read somewhere that all Wii USB microphones are compatible. Probably on Nintendo's Sing Party microsite.

Question: Is it possible to play single player NSMBU with a Wiimote instad of the Pad? I want to turn that thing off to save batteries!

    Yes.

    Awesome, thanks!

Whenever I get NSMBU, I'll definitely only play it with the Wiimote horizontally. For the NSMB series, that way is just perfect in my eyes. You can easily stay on the 1 button to keep running while pressing 2 to jump and it just felt really good. Just another reason why NSMBW is currently my favourite 2D Mario (yes, I said it! Smilie).

    Blasphemy!

    getting it at christmas

actualy the diference between the wii and wii u is like the difference between an ps1 and ps3 there a completely diferent console, improved graphics, online support, free social network, wii emulator (it means if you have a wii remote you can play wii games on wii u and even download something from the wii shop!),video chat app, tablet-like internet browser, and more! I thought the same thing the first time I heard of it, I thought the wii u was just a wii tablet accessory and some of my friends even thought it was a handheld console and when i got the wii u it surprized me! I have always been a nintendo fan but scince I got the wii u I started to do a ton of research on nintendo. In fact I posted this on my wii u. dont get tricked by the name, it wouldve been worse if they wouldve stuck with the first name: wii hd. remember wii wii u ,completely different consoles.

    Really well said Brian!

Very much so - Nintendo really need to get this difference across to consumers. Not just the games, but that it's an all new console Smilie

I have no reason why anybody would choose The Last of Gameplay over NSMBU. A lot of people say it's too similar to NSMBW, which it is, but there was rarely a moment I didn't have a huge grin on my face.
