E3 2006 Video | Nintendo Shows Super Smash Bros. Brawl - Update with E3 2006 Screens!

By Adam Riley 12.05.2006 152

At a special developer event, Nintendo has lifted the lid on Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii. An entirely new team has been pieced together for this outing, after Shigeru Miyamoto approached Masahiro Sakurai about creating a Wii version. Sakurai-san insisted that the Wii controller NOT be used for the game, therefore gamers can actually use their GameCube controllers once more to battle it out on the big screen. This confirms that the GC controllers can in fact be used for Wii games if so desired.

Single player will have (so far unannounced) changes to it, plus there will be a new online multiplayer option and lots of new characters! Confirmed so far are:

  • Pit from Kid Icarus
  • Samus in her sexy Zero Mission suit
  • Metaknight
  • Wario
  • Snake from Metal Gear Solid (at the specific request of Hideo Kojima!)
  • The game has also been confirmed as being pushed back into 2007.

    Some other details, courtesy of Games Are Fun, include:

  • Nobuo Uematsu, the genius behind Final Fantasy's greatest tunes, will compose the main theme;
  • Opera singer Ken Nishikiori has lent his vocals to the game;
  • All the music in Brawl is performed by a full orchestra;
  • There will be a deluxe chorus with lyrics in Latin(!);
  • The atmosphere of the game will be changed, in a so far unknown way!
  • You can listen to the main theme tune by following this link: http://www.smashbros.com/en/music/index.html

    (p.s i am glad they stuck to gc controller).

    Yes, I am very glad they didn't force Wiimote control, it doesn't seem like it would work well for this type of game.

    I've never played a Smash Bro. game, but I'll probably get this one if it's good. Inside game jokes are great, hopefully that theme will continue.

    I anticipate downloadable characters, it's inevitable.

    It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

    The possibilities of downloadable content is immense, I wasn't overaly impressed with the 'always on' thing at first but if it means coming to play a bit Smash Bros one day and finding a new character suddenly there, I think I begin to see the appeal. Smilie

    OH.... MY... GOD.... WORDS.... CANNOT DESCIRBE.... THE ENRICHING FEELING.... I JUST HAD......

    What?! There's a new SUper Smash Bros!? Oh OK Smilie!

    Seriously though, I can't wait for this, it looks incredible... awesome... those are in game graphics at some parts right? 'cos the fighting scene at the end, with Snake, looked worse than FMV...

    Well, I love it that Pit & Wario have made it in... SNAKE!??! WTF! Konami aren't that close to Nintendo! I can only hope that means Sonic is more likely to pop up! It would be so awesome!!

    Oh, & Samus looks great in 3D like that, I thought they could mess it up, she looks great!! SmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilie

    FUCKY YAY!! Who cares if it's in 2007!! My hype for this game went up 100%! It looks like they're working hard on the game, PLEASE don't rush it Nintendo!!!!!!!! SmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilieSmilie

    Okay, I'm back and ready to gush.

    Christ, this is one of the best looking games I've seen in the last few days if all that is in-engine. If that's what we can expect in-game, Wii has no trouble with graphics whatsoever, seems far beyond what the Gamecube is capable of. Look at the damn castle when they sweep in!

    Their choice of new characters has been impeccable so far - I think somebody's been doing their research to see what fans want. I'm a bit dodgy about Snake being included (what're his moves going to be? Break Luigi's neck and then hide him in a cupboard?), but I think he'll end up fitting in fine. Since they're doing that survey to find out who else people want in the game, I fully expect to find at least one (though probably all three) of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. Pit looks superb, nicely equipped with a sword now, and I think it's a bit hint that we'll be getting a new Kid Icarus game - then again, I thought that about Ice Climbers (and on that note, PLEASE make a new Ice Climbers game for Wii Nintendo! You know you want to!). Finally, they add Metaknight and Wario

    Its not necessarily Konami's connections to Nintendo as a whole but rather Hideo Kojamas connection with Nintendo that i think swayed the decision to include him.

    Metal gear Orginated on NES.

    Wrong it didnt, it orginated on the MSX2 and Metal Gear 2 also on MSX2. It wasnt for a while until it was released on the NES

    As for Snakes inclusion im a lil skeptical but he does have a lot of hand to hand combat moves so that would be great. You could imagine the B-down moving being laying C4 or something. If Fox and Falco can have a blaster (i think Fox should be able to use Krystals staff aswell) then why cant Snake have his SOCOM! Its an interesting bombshell, but i was still hoping for the inclusion of Sonic,Tails and Knuckles.

    I also dont like the name of Brawl. I have no better suggestions my self but hope it changes

    Also although Wario,meta Knight and un suited samus are kool. I still think that there are more characters that could easily be in this smash bros. Such as mentioned in that thread a while ago! I came up with many good suggestions as did others. Nintendo should really get the inclusion of characters to be right. Downloadable content would be good, as long as there is no fee to do so. I'd pay obviously but i dont want to.

    *Also on another note, it was good to see kirby,pikachu,link and Mario in the very opening scene jus like the other smash bros entrances! Smilie

    Dammit Mason beat me Smilie

    I want more than 4 characters on screen dammit!

    Still the new items i think Mario picks up some kinda super ability (the smash bros emblem sphere) and then unleashes a kick ass attack...maybe a bit OTT. Could be one of those annoying items like the "blue shell" in MK.Just imagine that attacking the games leader! OH GOD NO! PLEASE DONT TELL ME I JUST GAVE THEM AN IDEA....

    You know I never thought of that... Imagine turning on the Wii only to see NEW CHALLENGER appear straight away. You come in to find none other than SONIC staring you in the fact with a rusty axe he intends to bludgeon you with! Awesome...

    Personally I'm pretty gld they decided to keep it simple. I don't want to use Wii functions in Smash Bros, since it's already perfect, and they'd just slow down the game anyway...

    One very small idea I have had however... There shoudl be an event match where you play as the Master Hand, and use the controller for all the attacks. that would absolutely PWN. Plus it's just perfect

    This game is simply awesome. I would love a bunch of different modes and scenarios to become possible. As Megadanxzero said above, it would be great to control the Master Hand. Imaging a 3vs1 (Mario Party-esque) mode where one player is the hand, and the other 3 combine to attack against the hand.

    I would certainly love those single player events to make a welcome return, those were very very touch in Melee but enjoyable also. Adventure mode would do with a big rehash, it was fun but ended up, for me, being a little repetitive and boring at times.

    One thing's for sure - I would love to have a custom level editor - with preset objects from the Nintendo world or existing levels. the option to build your own platforms, include where items may land - that sorta thing - would be awesome.

    Smilie Excellent idea! It'd be pretty fun to merge elements of the different games into a single level too, like having Kirby scenery on one side and Metroid on the other

    Just looks amazing.

    A custom stage editor would be alright, I reckon the Wii's awesome memory system could pull it off well (if it has anything to do with that anyway...)

    I'm really impressed with how they pulled off Samus & Pit, thery look realistic, that's a great feat for a game like this to be honest, on all games up until now, Samus always looked a bit stupid without her helm (on MP1 & SSBM she looked pretty bad, but she looked alright on MP2E....) Anyway! It looks great!!!!! Smilie

    Woo.. I can't believe this.. this is the year of Nintendo we've been waiting for, new big MArio, SSB, Zelda & Metroid all in one year! As well as great new DS games...

    Dude, is this playable at E3? I'm surprised it wasn't shown at the press conference, but I think releasing it as such a surprise like this was EVEN BETTER! Smilie

    Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

    It's not playable this year. I wouldn't be surprised to see it being released after E3 2007, after being in playable form on the showfloor there.

    Random extra I want: 8 bit mode, where they all fight in sprite form. Smilie

    That would be SOO hard to make, they would have to make sprites for all of them!! Smilie

    unless they already have them... hmm imagine Sonic in 8-bit! Smilie

    Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

    It's looking very nice! Hopefully they'll be one or two surprises added in as well (other then Snake in the game).

    plus there will be a new online multiplayer option

    Yay! Sounds awesome already!

    Well they have a lot of them already, since they're Nintendo characters, and they could just use Master System sprites for Sonic. I don't think it'd take too long to implement, many of the series involved (and series that have potential to be involved) have been going for a while.

    Something I just noticed reading Masahiro Sakurai's words on the new official Smash Bros. site (it's great, I recommend you check it out) - these screens/movies AREN'T FINISHED and he wants to polish them up even more before release! W-o-w.

    Wow samus is damn sexy Smilie

    Great! looks like there's a character section coming soon! I reckon it'll be in the next few days too! Hopefully we'll see new art of the others once the character section is up...

    Dude, you can see sillhouettes on the character bit of the site, can anyone make them out? I'll try... Smilie

    Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

    Not checked to see if this has been posted yet...but on the page to suggest your favourite character for inclusion (http://cgi.nintendo.co.jp/cgi-bin/smashbros/article.cgi), the following options are:

    Your Name:

    Choose an option: 1. Not sure, sorry; 2.) What character do you want?; 3.) What music do you want in the game?

    Why did you chose that? (1,000 characters maximum)

    Then just click the button at the bottom Smilie

    I voted for Simon Belmont...

    Looks like the new characters to me. Left to right: Metaknight, Pit, Fusion Samus, Wario and Solid Snake.

    Nice one for the translation Adam, I'll get submitting some in a bit!
