..So much negativity going on around here, sorry if I don't post all that much.
Same, though you can't blame them really. People expected a 12-month-hyped grand unveiling of a next generation console with footage blowouts of Nintendo Franchises in HD, and that didn't happen. Nintendo chose to focus on the launch games and the third parties, something they historically have never done before at such a major event, and people weren't ready for it.
It's not too surprising when you think about it really, until recently E3 was the single biggest showcase event of the year, and that meant high expense of setting up demo units (and splitting off current development of said demos that cost even more to prepare beforehand), hiring premises and floorspace, and spending on advertisements. Not to mention having to contend with all the other companies and their announcements, running the risk of being drowned out by a higher-profile unveiling. With game development costs only growing more as time goes on, publishers and developers are going to have to weigh up whether or not it is worth doing when that money would be better spent going back into development costs, and they can run their own smaller events at their own convenience. Hense, the now-regular Nintendo Direct events. THAT is where the big announcements will be in future, E3 is now primarily to cater for the stockholders (and yes, I'm well aware that Nintendo stocks dropped after the event, that is a result of a poor showing and negative fan feedback). Look at what Nintendo actually showed as proof of that direction; NSMBU, the third in the line of tremendously popular 2D sidscrollers, Just Dance 4 - next in the line of the top third party sellers on Wii, and Wii Fit U, I don't even need to go into detail for that one.
Personally, I do wish Nintendo had at least given us a reel of what to expect on the way after the launch period, though my belief that NintendoLand's representative I.P's are a preview of what is to come. Heck, from what I hear, the reason the NintendoLand demo was so drawn out is because Nintendo were poised to finish the conference on a high note with Retro's project, but Retro pulled it at the last moment due to feeling that it wasn't ready. Certainly would fit better with the strong opening Pikmin 3 made.
I have no doubt the good stuff is on the way, we just have to be patient, hence why I'm still strongly considering a purchase on launch day (there had better be Black, damnit!). People tend to conveniently forget just how much time, effort, and money goes into HD games, and that will only get worse with the successors to PS3 and 360.
Edit: Another point I wanted to bring up. Nintendo have stated that they do not wish to repeat the mistakes that they made with the 3DS launch, are we seeing that happen already? 3DS's 2010 unveiling was a spectaular affair with a huge array of revealed games and a long list of developer support, but launch held very few compelling games and no true first party headliner title. Wii U's 2012 is almost the exact opposite in overall reaction, and it looks to have a stellar launch lineup, with Pikmin, NSMBU and Lego City easily lining up to take headliner status.
Maybe Nintendo believe they played their 3DS hand too early and are saving up the Wii U cards for later?
