You gotta hand it to Nintendo, they fucking know what they're doing!

Apparently a 3DS was taken from an assembly line in a Chinese factory where the 3DS is being produced.

You guys heard about this?

Battery Life

It takes 3.5 hours for a 3DS battery to fully charge, which is pretty good. As for how fast that battery drains, Nintendo has only provided a select number of figures, all based on the presumption you're using the handheld on a lower screen brightness level.

With the screen's backlighting turned down (but not off), you'll get 3-5 hours of battery life while playing a 3DS game. That number extends to 5-8 hours if you're playing an older DS game on the handheld.

Of course, the more you increase the screen's brightness, the bigger the hit the 3DS' battery life will take. While people will be upset that these numbers seem low for a Nintendo handheld, they're not that far off what you'd expect from a DSi, and considering the 3DS is a much more powerful device, all that extra grunt takes its toll on a battery.

On the lowest brightness? 3 to 5 hours? I'm a little worried about that figure. Hopefully when more people get their hands on this there will be some more definitive reports - but I was expecting a solid 5 hours + on normal brightness/when playing demanding games. It's not the best in the world, that.

What was the PSP's battery life?

Some videos of Resident Evil Mercenaries 3D.

This game looks epic but I'm not seeing any videos of aiming and shooting in 3rd person view. It all seems to be aiming in 1st person view which I don't really mind but I really hope we get a choice between the two.

Edit: Nvm I keep forgetting the very 1st glimpse of gameplay we got of Mercenaries 3D has hunk aiming and shooting his shotgun in 3rd person so it's all good xD

I think Nintendo should have left it longer, personally and released it next year, instead. It's probably the 3D screens that cost the most and contribute to the (probable) hefty pricing. Leaving it an extra year probably would have cut the system production pricing.

I don't want to sound really negative about it either. But it just doesn't seem like much of a step up from the DSi, from what I've seen. I know the visuals look great, but the menus just look similar and have most of the same features, apart from the AR stuff. It's a typical Nintendo OS and I haven't heard much about an improved online experience. Like, for example, will there still be friend codes?

The 3D will be a big deal for some, but I honestly don't care much for it and never have done. it's one of the last reasons why I would want a 3DS.

Then there's the games announced, so far. There's nothing that stands-out and is original. Nintendo ports, Nintendo games that look the same as the DS versions, with slight changes. Animal Crossing looks the same again, as does Mario Kart, as does Nintendogs, just with the addition of cats and better visuals.

Then it's the same for 3rd party software. Another Ridge Racer, Resident Evil, Super Monkey Ball, Street Figher and they all look the same as the versions on other consoles.

There isn't much for me to get excited about at all.

You know, it's generally easier to take an already existing game/concept and redo it on new hardware to get to know it better. The original and innovative stuff always comes later as devs have better knowledge of the hardware and try new things. The DS didn't have all of its great games at launch either, almost all of them started popping up quite a bit later.

The 3DS is set to have a much better launch year than the DS, however, I'm disappointed at Nintendo. Reusing the same crappy cameras used in the DSi? Missed opportunity there. Would have been nice to be able to take decent pictures with the 3DS. Going for the cheapest and possibly the lowest res cameras you can even buy these days is just sad.

Several little design flaws also annoy me. Smilie

Unless I see one for a really decent price (unlikely), I'll probably hold off until the redesign however hard it'll be to wait. Smilie

I bet the 3DS OS isn't customizable either with themes etc. Just like the Wii and DSi, we'll be stuck looking at the same boring grey/white layout for the next 5 years.

They need a profile system where your purchases get linked to instead of being tied to the system only. If I lose all my VC/WW purchases, I'll burn Nintendo UK's HQ to the ground and I'm not kidding. Smilie

They don't really need high res cameras seeing as 640*480 is higher res than the actual screen on there.

Plus even if they did offer a better megapixel would you really use it for taking pictures, cameras on phones are god awful even at 7megapixel, there all grainy and shit even in day light and then completely unusable at night even with there crappy little led flash.
It's not sad it's sensible seeing as the system already costs are pretty high and the camera seem to perform fie for the augmented reality needs of the system.

( Edited 09.01.2011 16:08 by Jimmy2000 )

No one's asking for state of the art cameras but at least better than the lowest quality available. They're using the cameras as a selling point "take 3D pictures" they say. My phone is only 2mp and, while not a work of art, provides very nice pictures. 0.3mp looks bad even on the small DSi screens. 1mp cameras wouldn't be expensive and would at least be a step up from the DSi.

On the DSi you could use pictures taken as wallpaper but it wasn't very easy to get a decent pic to use. (You can't transfer pics to a DSi from a PC for some retarded reason.) And from what we've seen, the Augmented Reality stuff is only just passable in quality which is a shame cause it's a great feature.

You have to remember though Ifrit that the 3DS has 3 cameras so it'll cost 3 times as much to improve the camera quality and I'm sure that would raise the actual retail price of 3DS to a non consumer friendly level.

But you're also forgetting that the 3DS is likely to already be sold at a a non consumer friendly price. Smilie

Nintendo, like with the Wii probably planned to sell the 3DS so that they were making profit from day 1.

Fixed.

I don't know. I think this system is fairly obviously flawed, in a way in which the original DS never was. There are a lot of areas for improvement (battery life, camera quality, various functionality matters) + the shell is very rigid.

Seems like the scent of a sleeker-looking, longer-lasting new model is pretty strong. It'll be on the horizon as the first model peaks its prime.

But the most important question is are people willing to wait? I, probably, am not.

Tom Barry [ Reviewer - Editor - Resident Sim-Racer @ Cubed3.com ]

I am, DS still has a lot of life left in it, and like Sony's machines will still probably get a steady supply of decent games long after 3DS releases.
Can't wait for Ghost Trick, and Okamiden has the potential to be my game of the year. Smilie

The iPod touch uses an ARM11 (modified) chip and and doesn't last too long when gaming, the 3DS has two processors a gpu, two screens, and one of them uses 3D.

I think 3-5 hours battery life gaming isn't too bad if you consider that, and this.

I won't be getting one launch anyway unless I have a part time job to pay for it by then.

I too am not overly excited by the 3DS. No games scream out at me. Most are games I've played before. Nintendo's effort has disappointed me. If OOT3DS doesn't contain Master Quest I'll be very annoyed.

Think I'll wait till the inevitable 3DSlite.

Leaving it an extra year would have completely eradicated their advantage. They're going to have the first system on the market that everybody can play in 3D right out of the box - and one of the first mainstream 3D-enabled products that doesn't require glasses - and they would have been silly to squander the opportunity to do that as a company that prides itself on its innovation.

As for the OS and the online... frankly, we don't know enough about it to make a judgement. The OS was inaccessible at Nintendo World. As far as I'm aware, the Japanese market doesn't care about online gaming quite as much as in the west, which is why there's been more of an emphasis on StreetPass when promoting it at Nintendo World. I would imagine we'll learn more about that side of things at the European/American conferences on the 19th January. Hopefully the suspicions of a system-wide log in via Miis turns out to be true; there are already system-wide 'rewards' through the built-in pedometer, giving you coins that can be spent over different games, so perhaps this could form the basis of an achievement system, Nintendo-style, too.

Personally, I'm excited, if a little wary - if Nintendo balls up the online this time, I hold little hope for the Wii successor. I threw my £10 deposit down in GAME the other day, though, and advise everybody else who wants one on launch to do the same.

I too am not overly excited by the 3DS. No games scream out at me.

What games exactly are you looking for? I can't understand how anyone can't be happy with the 3DS games announced so far. Personally, its pretty rare to see so many A-listers announced before a console has even launched.

This is only because the big hitters from Nintendo are games I've played a million times - OOT and Star Fox 64. I love those games, and I would most likely get them on the 3DS when I do get one anyway, but it's not enough to make me go out and buy the system just yet. If Nintendo surprise me and there is actually a lot more to those games than just graphical upgrades, i.e. Master Quest, extra temples/levels, etc, then I might be inclined a little more.

Mario Kart likely won't be too dissimilar from its DS counterpart either. Paper Mario I'm a big fan of, but again, I don't think it's going to be enough to make me personally get the console just yet.

I'm basing this on the judgement that the 3DS is going to be quite expensive at launch, especially here in the UK. I will definitely get those games when I get a 3DS eventually, but I don't think the inevitable expensive price is enough to make me want to get them just yet.

That said, if this was a brand new Zelda and Star Fox, I might think differently. But as it is, they are games I've played over and over in the past, so I won't be rebuying them anytime soon (until a price drop for the 3DS that is).

But you never know - if the 3DS does come out at a good price, I will get them Smilie
