Episode 2 does look good, but from some of the comments I have read when the game was leaked on Steam, they said that the physics were not that much better then episode 1's. The graphics for the stages look nice, but the music is ear bleeding. It makes you want to play it without sound. Listened to a few tracks like the boss music and it made me want to die. Hope its not all like that.

The music is an improvement, not a huge one but it has some cool tracks. The boss music is shit though.

The physics ARE much better at least from the leaked Beta, far from perfect but not bad!

After seeing a few videos of Episode 2 in action it just looks like more of the same, as in they havn't seemed to have fixed anything that annoyed me about the first episode.
I'll give the demo a go when it eventually arrives just incase stuff changes.

What annoyed you about the first? I'll probably be able to tell you if they've done anything about it.

Uncurling from springs and what not.

Things like the spin dash momentum dissipating, in Episode 1 I remember being stuck in a half pipe area, I thought to my self "A spin dash will get me out of here!" but no matter how powerful I tried to make the spin I could not get out. So by accident I just ran up the wall and....it worked, sonic stuck to the wall slowly walking up :/
It didn't make sense, not even in Sonic fantasy land should this make sense! Like somthing is sapping all my movement energy but only when i'm curled into a ball.

It seems to want you to run all the time, I never did that in the originals, any time I was speeding along I pressed down, this would reward you by basically making you deadly to most enemies and you generally picked more and more speed. It didn't seem to work like that in Sonic 4, you where punished for it. On some ledges you come to a complete full stop when you go over them in a spin dash( and i mean you could spin dash your hardest right on the tip of the ledge but you would come to a complete halt once you went over it.)

Sonic just stopped really quickly if you let go of left or right, you running or spinning along really fast and you let go of left/right and he would come to an unnaturally quick stop.

Also the crappy puzzle section in the desert stage.

Basically does it controle more like the MegaDrive games or Episode 1?

Uncurling is gone, buut..

The rolling is probably the biggest physics issue the game still has.

- If you roll down a steep hill, you WILL pick up speed, a very decent amount, even if you let go of the directional buttons.
- If you roll down a slight gradient you will slow down unfortunately
- When you charge up a spin dash, each charge will take you the same distance/speed unless you hold a directional button, either way you'll go a decent way/you won't stop instantly
- When running you won't stop instantly after letting go of directional buttons, it's not as pinbally as the originals but if you go down a wall or steep slope without holding a button you will run automatically on the momentum alone for a short while, you can run backwards like this too etc
- ..it still wants you to run more often than you spin, but spinning is generally better done than in Ep1.

This ia a beta so it MIGHT improve before the final release, but in the Beta I did some pretty extensive physics trials because it also pissed me off a lot in Ep1.

MUCH better than Ep1
Still not MegaDrive level

I think you'll probably be a bit disappointed in spin attacking like I am.
Hopefully they'll release a demo so you can try the physics for yourself.

However I've reached a point where I barely like Episode 1 anymore and find it almost embarrassing to play, and.. I found myself being pleasantly surprised with this so far, even if it's not what it should be it's still pretty good.
If that makes sense.

I still go back to episode one very rarely. I do like it, but the more I play it something just makes me want to go onto CD. I hope a demo does come out.

It takes a while to sink in doesn't it!
Sonic 4, awesome! I really like this game
I really like this game....I think?
I really want to like this game
This game is ok, not bad.
Hmmm these problems are starting to bug me
Man, I miss the old games
Fuck it, this game sucks *plays Sonic & Knuckles

Well, I'll give the demo a go when it arrives.

The thing that annoys me alot about sonic 4 is going through a loop and jumping off at the right angle to gain more speed, only to stop because the physics suck Smilie

Yep that's how it happened for me too, looking back I can't believe I ever said "Sonic 4 has done justice to its name!" what was I smoking.

I appreciate Ep1 even less after the Sonic CD remake was so amazing and they made the physics EVEN BETTER.

But yeah I'm enjoying what I've played of Ep2 despite my general unease towards the series.

The Sonic CD remake's physics would be a great inclusion in Episode 2. Those physics were soo much better than when the game was first released.

HOLY RED-SHOED HEDGEHOGS BATMAN!! Episode II was released in US just earlier, probably will be in Europe tomorrow.

In Sonic 4 related news that I was pretty surprised to hear, Sonic 4 Episode I actually sold worst on Wiiware out of all platforms! Which is bizarre considering how much retail Sonic games sell on Nintendo systems.

Did you need any more proof that Nintendo need to give their downloadable games less limitations and more integration?
I don't really blame them for not attempting to get Episode II to work on Wiiware all things considered.

Yep, PS3 sold most.

Ep II demo out on US PSN. Was gonna make an account to try it but sod it, it's out tomoz.

Sigh will journalists never stop beating the dead horse? Jesus christ.

Rant:

The sooner ~gaming journalists~ discover that the Sonic series is on the fix rather than getting worse and stop making the same redundant articles full of shitty points over and over again the sooner I'll stop complaining about them and that works out well for everyone.

On topic some brief impressions of the game:
Sonic 4 Ep2 is good, not amazing, but good. It's the best sidescrolling Sonic since Sonic Advance 3 but there are a lot of things Generations does better.
Pros:
- Better music
- Better physics and decent stage design/gimmicks
- Some really neat new bosses and badniks

Cons:
- Music instruments are bad
- Physics are far from perfect
- Lock-on sucks
- They still can't do what they did 20 years ago

I'd give it a 7 or 8 out of 10. Worth a try for anyone, I think that non-Sonic fans are probably more likely to enjoy it than Sonic fans because they'll enter the game without pre-conception of what a 'classic' feels like so they won't feel let down by the once again broken promise.

But even as a Sonic fan it's a pretty enjoyable game, it's promising and shows they're finally getting somewhere.
