You get used to the controls and the way Sonic moves after just a few stages. There are some annoyances that crop up every once in a while, and there are a few frustrating moments too. Like those damn cannons in the casino.

It probably shouldn't have been called Sonic 4, but it's a very good game in its own right. Perhaps they should have done a Nintendo - instead of Super Mario 4, we got New Super Mario. That seems fitting for this game too.

If you're a Sonic fan, I think it's good value for a tenner.

It's ok to pass it off as a good game in it's own right, if you are new to the series.
But for older fans (who this was aimed at remember) the fact they couldn't get the feel of the older games in place could be pretty disappointing an just turn them away. It's not what the wanted why shouldn't they find it disappointing?

Because a new Sonic Team are working back towards that which they've lost.

It's the closest thing to the classic series since the classic series finished, I think, with the promise of further promise towards that goal, Sonic 4 achieved what it set out to do.

Sonic Advance was closer to feeling like the classics imo.
But as long as they take on board some of the complaints, they were so close, just if they fix the way he moves so he doesn't stop/slowdown so abruptly when you jump/go of a ledge and actually speeds up when rolling the game would be pretty much perfect

Just played through the demo again, I'm really tempted to buy it.. and also tempted to buy Sonic Adventure and the DX upgrade (Already own the GC version but yeah, I r silly.) just so I can get the 800 free MS Points for spending 2400. Or there's Comic Jumper which was developed by Twisted Pixel Games. (team who developed Splosion Man) I has 4100 points atm but I want to save some just in case any of the future 3 Skill Packs for DR2 are more than 160. What should I do? I really wanna spend 2400 this month, just to get 800 free MSP. Smilie

That and I'm still waiting for DR2: Case West. D:

lol I bought the DX upgrade last week too. Still need to work my way through those missions.

And even though the Sonic Adventure 2 Battle additions were minor (mostly just chao and multiplayer stuff), I wonder if they will include them in the inevitable Sonic Adventure 2 download. Guess it doesn't matter if not, as SA2 was much better than SA1 anyway.

I don't think it's really worth me downloading SA on XBLA since I already have it on GC.. what do you think? Smilie

I probably wouldn't bother if you've got it on GC.

I only owned SA1 on Dreamcast, and now it's packed away. And I never got the chance to play the DX extras either, so I gave in to temptation and got it on PS3.

In all honesty, I shouldn't get SA2 when/if it comes out for download as I have SA2Battle on GC too.

There's probably a fair few games you'd wanna buy over SA1 too, so maybe save up for those instead?

Yeah, sorry about taking this thread off-topic guys. I might try the demo of Comic Jumper since I absolutely loved Splosion Man and Twisted Pixel are quite a talented development team. Gonna leave any downloads for now though, feeling pretty sick. Smilie

Back on topic: Still wondering whether I should get this or not.. HALP GUYS! D:

Spin dash going up a hill (even really small ramps although it's a bit harder) and pressing the jump button makes you launch into the air, i now use this method when the spinners send me up a ramp as you don't uncurl from ball form!Smilie

Played a lot of the game now (at Mad Gear, thank you SEGA!) and, while I still don't think it's worth the asking price, it's not as bad as I thought it'd be. The levels are very creative at times and would fit in with the classic games.

It feels more like Sonic 2.5 since it more resembles Sonic 2 than it does S3&K. No tails and Sonic 1/2 stage rehashes certainly don't help its case (plus shields, knuckles and zone transitions).

The main problem is a complete lack of horizontal momentum which means you have to constantly hold right to keep moving. Let go and you'll come to a complete halt no matter what it is you're doing like rolling down a hill etc.

The bosses are dead easy and can be defeated long before they go into crazy mode. The special stages are a bit fiddly and require a lot of patience. Each Zone also has a few bottomless pits. More than there should be. Hopefully Dimps hold back on them for episode 2.

I'd say I'm enjoying this more than Sonic CD which I found too complex but it needs that horizontal momentum back if it's ever going to be worthy of the name. Also, no more throwbacks! Lord knows episode 1 got carried away with them. Smilie They mights as well have remade Sonic 2. Smilie

I'd give the game a 6/10. Smilie

Do you know if there's any chance it will be coming to retail?

I don't think there's any chance of that happening to be honest, It does costs a measly $12 on download after all.

It should be available to download of 3DSWare also.

3DS Code 2578-3122-0744

It should be available to download of 3DSWare also.

I will have to wait till I get a 3DS, to get it.

Thanks. Smilie

I say get it. While the game can be annoying to play, the throwbacks and level designs are both fun and creative. Sure it may not be a proper sequel and seems more like a 'tribute' but it's still the closest game to the classics since S3&K. Smilie

Plus there's always the potential for lock-on to add tails and knuckles.

I'm wishing I'd done the easier emeralds on the later levels now. Only got one more but keep on getting bounced into the goals, and I'm not always fast enough to hit the retry option

The fifth emerald really annoyed me because of the springs. I managed the get the 6th and 7th emeralds the first try. Smilie

If you get all the rings during the victory run after the final boss, and have all 7 emeralds, you'll get the Super Sonic pose. Smilie

I did it first try today. Now killing 2 birds with one stone by time attacking and super-sonic-ing all the acts

Just played it for the first time, and to completion.

While the physics took a bit of getting used to, and I'm annoyed that the "you don't have to use HA" line was a pile of PR bs, it was thoroughly enjoyable.

My biggest problem with the game by far were the air physics. Stop holding the directional button means you stop in middair? No thanks. It made some of the Casino stages pretty awkward.

However, that said, I think I can say with confidence that this is the closest thing since the original trilogy since Sonic & Knuckles. It may not do justice to them, but it's certainly not an insult to them either.

With this as the prologue and starting point, I can only see it getting better.

Last but not least I'd like to praise the stage design, specifically the latter two Zones. They combined quality platforming with speed, it's something Sonic hasn't really done right for a long time. I guess we have S3&K's level designer to thank for that, right?

Oh and, yes, it's short, but Sonic 2 was bloody short too Smilie I'm satisfied for now.

Well done, previously pretty shite Sonic Team.

Okay, Internet's been down for a couple of days. Thinking about unlocking the full version when I get on my 360 later.

I honestly don't think changing the game's name would have made the difference between getting 8 or 9/10 like it has been.

I actually believe it would influence some reviews of the game, but that really isn't the point I was trying to get across. I was saying that I think the only reason a lot of people are interested in this, is because of its name.

It just looks like the Sonic version of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, to me, but probably worse from what I've been hearing about the psychics. Saying that, I did hear some music and at least they made a better effort than Nintendo and their music for NSMBWii. It actually had some nice variety.

I'd like to try a demo out of it though. Maybe I would like it. Hopefully one will get added to the European PSN.

I think, if anything, having a different name would have made the reviews better, because there is more at stake with a name like Sonic 4.

It's gotten attention, and it's also gotten really good reviews. I can't help but be extremely impressed, considering this is from a completely new team who have a hard time coming out with anything good.

The physics are better than Rush, Rivals, and arguably Advance. Even so, it's not a bad thing to be the Sonic version of NSMBW, and considering it feels almost as long as Sonic 2, it's actually pretty good value for money.

I have to say I'm genuinely surprised that gamers have been more harsh towards Sonic 4 than the critics have.

That never happens with Sonic games.
(Except Sonic Heroes, now I think about it)

Just finished Act 1+2 of Splash Hill Zone as well as Special Stage 1. I like the whole "new retro" feel to it. The Special Stages seem a bit too much like Sonic 1's though... Hopefully this will be changed in Episode 2.

It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path.

Sounds like they a have some work to do for the second episode.

I won't be back amongst my consoles until Christmas but I don't think I'll be buying this. Ultimately it sounds like a bit of an underwhelming rehash. It's a shame.

Okay, got this yesterday. Finished it once, it's actually pretty good. Smilie Only just found out there's Avatar Awards to be unlocked in this. I have the Sonic costume, now I need the head.. I keep missing one ring on the final bit. ;-;

EDIT: YUSH, I DID IT!! :3

I really like the music in lost labyrinth act 2 but HATE that little torch puzzle, really ruins the pace of that level.

Go to about 2min30secs, just highlights some of the physics complaints I have with the games.

You can get used to it but eh, I didn't expect that I would have to relearn the fundamentals on how to controle sonic, especially in the supposed sequel to the classics.

But I'm not going to bitch about it anymore it's an alright game but if episode 2 is the same I won't be revisiting Sonic Episodic.
