Shenmue II will probably arrive tomorrow...
You've not played it before? Tell me, you're getting the Dreamcast version, and carrying your finished save from Shenmue I, right? Well, you're in for a fucking treat. It's way bigger than the first game. The first game just sets the scene, really. Things really hot up in Shenmue II. By the end of the game, it's not just a revenge story anymore.
Rumour had it they'd release the final chapters in a book due to budget constraints.
That's quite an old rumour, which has since been made an idiot of.
I think we'll see it next gen, in some form.
That's alot closer to the mark. I'll fill you in on the latest news (assuming that you don't frequent shenmuedojo.com, if you do, then you already know all this):
Kikizo.com released a 'leaked' report that, not only was Shenmue III not cancelled, that it was infact being geared up for a next-gen release. According to the report, nothing solid had been decided yet, but the game is finished (and has been for some time), and they are searching for a deal, or failing that, a multi-platform release.
Also according to the report, the game was very nearly announced last E3, for Xbox (old Xbox). That plan fell through at the last second. So, what can be gathered from that is; The game has been finished for awhile at least, and was made for Xbox (so some real improvement in graphics can be expected over Shenmue II). So, unless they have improved it further (which I imagen they would), we're looking at a dormant Xbox game, which is to be polished up and further refined (graphically), and released on PS3/Revo/360.
Now, while rumours have surfaced before, none so in-depth and water tight. Kikizo are also an EXTREMELY trusted website, who have close links with (and inside) SEGA. Kikizo broke the world exclusive news on Outrun2 before anyone else, even SEGA (before the game was even announced!).
Here is the REPORT
Now, that was some months ago. Since then, Yu Suzuki has been interviewed by some Korean site, and the interview has been roughly translated. What we got from it waws, that as far as Yu is concerned, there are no current plans for Shenmue III.
Now, while this may initially seem to conflict with Kikizo's report, it actually backs it up. The report states that Shenmue remains an AM2 property, and that Yu Suzuki has no current involvement in the project. Since the game is conpleted, it could go ahead without him. Remember, the Kikizo report came a couple of monthws before the Yu interview.
What Yu did state in the interview, though, was that he would still like to Direct it, when it happens. Which links to the latest hot piece of gossip. Now, while the Kikizo report and Yu's Korean interview may seem at conflict (though they are NOT, as I have pointed out), wait 'til you hear this. In early Febuary, Kikizo have landed an interview, in English, with Yu Suzuki!!!!!!!
Why's this such an important development? Well, for a start, the Korean interview with Yu-san was never translated into English professionally, or properly. It was just put through Babelfish, which (as anyone who has used it before will know) produces less that adequate results. What you get is fragmented gibberish, which you've got to try and make sense of. Indeed, the Korean interview has been interpreted in a few (very different) ways.
So, finally, an ENGLISH interview. By KIKIZO, no less! Kikizo's webmaster (Adam Doree, who was the author of the initial leaked report) will be conducting the review. While the review is officially regarding Shenmue Online, Doree has already been quoted as saying that he's not pulling any punches, and is going to push some hard Shenmue III questions.
So, in short, the best news in years, and we've finally got some REAL FUCKING HOPE of seeing Shenmue III. The way I see it, all this could either be one big coincidence, OR, everything is coming together. The leaked report in Kikizo (who's integrity is NOT in question, they have proven sources inside SEGA, they wouldn't post bullshit, especially about Shenmue III), now this interview, by Kikizo with Yu Suzuki!
Remember, it's E3 in May...
