Microsoft Research are working on a project that allows 100s of players online simultaniously without any lag.

This shit would be so awesome in a LoTR game, where a battlefield is filled with thousands of online players... (Video)

Microsoft show the way, Nintendo show us the way backwards Smilie.

way to compare a two year old PAID network to a freebie that's been around only half that time...

My rants have been about things that should come as standard on the existing network Smilie.

Still, this looks amazing. The fact remains 360 owners such as myself will be playing such games soon enough with no lag. It's a HUGE step foward, as opposed to steps backward like crappy pre text messages and no freedom in the Wi-Fi options Smilie.

Spin it whatever way you want, you know Nintendo's online system is disgraceful. You could compare it free servers on PC like Battle net and just cry because its so crappy and limited.

Sigh, Nintendo shall always put the children first. I can't really hope for any GRAND online system with my Wii anymore.

wait, so this thread compares an expensive paid-service (ooh look, only a few quid for a hi-res wallpaper, woot!) to a freebie, in an attempt to make the RRoDbox look superior... but I'M the one applying spin?

enjoy being nickel-and-dimed by M$ for stuff thats free elsewhere... so long as the 'console' manages to function for long enough to download anything (a few minutes). will you be so quick to jump to M$ defence when your on your 4th or 5th replacement Box, i wonder?

Wii Connect can certainly improve, but at least we don't pay extra. by the way anybody who complains about the Nintendo wi-fi obviously wasn't one of millions like myself who enjoyed trading dozens of Pokemans recently... you know, free, quick, global.

Actually I compared it too a free server, Battlenet. Just look at the many games on PC with amazing online.

How is that relevant?

How does that make an excellent online service?

The Wii WiFi has ways to improve in it's own way. MoH is gonna be 32 players or something, & I know it's nothing compared to XBLAH, but no online system is perfect. Wii WiFi seriously limits your online freedom, & XBLAH costs money, & you can swear at each other freely etc.

That's why XBLAH works so well at what it does, it's aimed at a higher audience in general, & Nintendo's is something that kids will be able to do. Of course on XBLAH you can report abusive players right? Nintendo really SHOULD sort something like that out if they want to be extra safe, that way players could be matched up with other players of an equal age level, so to speak. That way, children could face people around their own age, & teens or above could face anyone teen or above, Capiche?

Like a genius company like Nintendo would ever listen to a 16 year old's brilliant idea though. Smilie

I am seriously not that worried about the maximum players, anything more than 16 is negligible to me. I am pissed off at the lack of features and lack of communication.

That bit then.

When you bought a family console you signed a very strict privacy contract.

EDIT: Wiiware is on the way, WiiConnect24 just needs to be set on a role by a game like Animal Crossing. There will be more features over time.

Whether it's free or not is irrelevant. Most of the inadequacies with the Wiis online games are purely Client-side.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

It's relevant on a certain level. If you had to pay for Wii online then NOONE would get it, Capiche?

Mentioning the reliability issues of the 360 is a lame distraction from the ONLINE discussion at hand here.
I agreed with you a little up until the point you mentioned Pokemon Smilie. Seriously I do agree with a little of what you say but Zs/iCAME point is ultimately right, the Wii is dire in comparison.

As a Wii owner that uses the functionality we do have to the max I still feel totally disconnected from other Wii owners. Simple messages can take hours to get through at times, it is ridiculous. I could go on about the size restrictions on those messages and a whole load of other things. Even the recent Keyboard functionality is comical as it still requires you to pick up the Wii Remote and click send Smilie Smilie. I could go on and on.

In the Wii's defense it will improve over time as XBL has, but what worries me is that the scope for improvement is far greater on the other platforms. You mate cannot have a clue about the pinnacles of online gaming and how good it can be if your trading Pokemans on the weekend, quite frankly.

Online gaming is a absolute MUST for games in this generation. A recent survey was done that showed that games with a online service sold far better than those without, developers know this, they know they can make more revenue by providing great online components. Nintendo need to buck up!

I, I agree.

O.K understandable, and I see where your coming from and I agree in relation to the Wii. My thinking on this however bears relation to clans on XBL and all over for that matter. They have had a MASSIVE impact for the XBL community and this will only improve it even moreso.

What words struck me in that interview is when he mentioned something that put the battle scene of The Two Towers in my head. Imagine just that sort of thing in this gaming context, with all the those soldiers under the control of individual people in real-time with no slow down. The ramifications would be immense, you could lead armies into battle against one and other in all types of games. To me it sounds like a great future for online gaming.

Yeah, comparing a future service that's probably a few years off, along with what sounds a bit like hyperbole to something currently going and hasn't had any MMO type games. I'm also curious as to how many updates this game does for the people you're not focusing on and how accurate this "guided AI" might actually be, and how much of an advantage this really has in games where you're almost constantly shifting your focus (which is what's going to happen with hundreds of players). I'm imagining situations where this guided AI is off even by the equivalent of a few millimetres and ending up causing the death of someone that might not normally have been killed, another situation that might happen with hundreds of players and God knows how much ammunition going everywhere.

I wonder if Sony are doing something similar Smilie.

Seeing as though this will come to the fore at the tail end of the gen they should do, to make equal impact going into the next. Sony probally dont spend anywhere near as much on this type of R and D in comparison.

Nintendo's online implementation is terrible.

Yeah, and it has much to do with their commitment to safe gaming. The thing is while I can understand that, I cannot understand why adult Wii owners have to pay the price for this safety. This should not have to be the case when Wii is for everyone. Also another hurdle is the lack of a HD which could house the software needed for a better online service and experience. If they created a bloody headset, at the very least with Smash they could have given the option of Voice Chat between Wii Friends, but no not even that. Battalion Wars Wii as a result will be a glorified GC game, TRULY Smilie. You cannot give us slightly updated controls and graphics and not include V-C in a game that has Co Op of a type as that will. It's definitely looking that way with the game out soon. If that game gets released with a Headset I will shut the hell up, and not before. Nintendo move at a lackluster pace and I for one am not happy because these are big titles missing standard components.

It makes me laugh how Nintendo fanboys will taut the lack of standard voice-communication in Wii Online games as some kind of boon "It's great, means we don't have to hear people talking smack". Lol what rubbish. A; there's a very simple and effective mute button on XBL, and B; it's just a poor attempt at saving face. Wii online is really pants.

People who say Xbox live only has rowdy retards on it are stupid anyway. There are tons of great people on XBL.

Sadly I agree, though it does save you from listening to all the high pitched, squeaky voices of the kids you know are playing.Smilie

Right now, I don't see much need for this now, most games are made for few people, and though the lag can get bad, it's not too bad usually. But I can see this adding a lot to games that are made for this in the future and I'm sure it will be great.

There are fucking idiots on XBL, many are racist and sexist, and many are rednecks. Microsoft with their inflated advertising budgets can get many idiots onboard with their funds.

That my friend would be sex.

Isn't calling someone a red neck generally seen as racist?

No, it's calling it as it is. How would you like it if you were playing a game and people shoot you in the face and call you the a F ing N or Osama, or a Faggot for that matter.

Trust me the are some sad and dispicable people on their at times, inbreds with little education. They call anyone with a feminine Gamer Tag sluts and hoars, my girlfirend does not go on XBL anymore to have to listen to that crap. It would seem they come from one part of the world mainly, as I have found through experience. Aussies are great though, I put on a larakin accent and have fun all the time Smilie. "Ya flaming mongrels!, take that!"Smilie

There are many nice people on XBOX Live, sure, like if you're nice there are bound to be loads of other nice players who just want to have a good time. But a stupid amount of players take games too seriously & swear when they lose. It's become obvious to me because of the stupid amount of players that quit Nintendo WiFi games so they don't lose face.

Even if Live has loads of nice players, it doesn't hide the fact that there are some horrible people out there, & Wii is a family console. That means Voice Chat with strangers can NEVER happen, except for maybe on a game with an age rating of 12 or higher, because if parents get their kids that game & their kid gets told to fuck off, then it's their own stupid fault.

I doubt Nintendo will catch up this gen. I'm sure they'll have realised that graphics & lack of online is a problem this gen, & then they'll make something good enough to counter XBL or PSN in 8th gen, when MS & Sony are coming up with even more new ideas.

I personally don't care, Nintendo's WiFi service does what I want it to, it lets me play my favourite games against other people. If it's not good enough for me I'll get a 360. End of discussion.

Twitter | C3 Writer/Moderator | Backloggery

I am not talking about those that take games too seriously I am taking about homophobic, rascist, and sexsist people that abuse others with any reason what so ever.

Do you even have a XBL account SuperLink?, it's well known among the masses what kind of idiots frequent XBL Smilie.

To hell with swearing I do it all the time on XBL, most people dont have issue with that at all, it's the other type that people do, the masses, the ones inflicted with mental retardation due to inbreeding that stop XBL from fufilling it's potential.
