Game Freak: More Action for Pokémon on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Game Freak's Junichi Masuda recently expressed an interest to bring a more action-driven approach to Nintendo's Pokémon.

The main RPG series has a successful and simple formula - you catch critters and battle others taking it in turns. With the odd side quest here and there, there isn't much in terms of action. Discussing all-things Pokemon with US magazine Game Informer, Masuda notes how he'd like to blend in more action elements into future games.

"Yes, I have thought of doing something new, and it makes me very excited to think of new elements for the game," said game director Junichi Masuda to Game Informer. "... This is just an idea but ... as you know, Pokémon is a role-playing game. But, personally, I really like the action type of games, so we just talk about that sometimes. We probably want to add some kind action element to the game.

Thanks to Destructoid.

How would you like to see future Pokémon games evolve? Would you like to see a more action/story-driven approach?

Pokémon has plenty of room for spin offs. For such a big series I'm sure they could squeeze a few more new series' in alongside the currently existing ones Smilie

Also very interested on seeing how the main RPG series evolves now. I honestly think they may be planning something bigger for 5th gen.

In my opinion, I don't think it would affect sales much. If it has Pokemon on the box, then parents will probably still buy it for their children.

And get Nintendo in trouble for all the swearing and abuse involved in MMOs? No, Nintendo would be stupid to willingly make that game.

If they made a Pokémon MMO, they would make a conscious choice to aim it at an older audience, at the same time losing the grand majority of their sales, and attracting media criticism for alienating their demographic. You absolutely cannot aim an MMO at children out of fear of being sued.

Their main demographic is current day children? As far as I know, having a brother who\'s in primary school, Pokemon is not considered to be a mainstream fad for children anymore. The merchandise isn\'t as big as it was when our age group were children and neither is the TV program.

Looking at the ONM Pokemon forum (the ones who buy the games), the absolute worst posts are written by people who are capable of using a computer/internet browser/DS, so must be old enough to operate some form of Nintendo-censored MMO.

It never will be as big as it was back then, but that doesn\'t change the fact that Pokémon is first and foremost aimed at young children, the media, the parents who went through it all, they all know this.

A Nintendo-censored MMO would be one that ran entirely on friend codes (AKA a single player game with friends on it sometimes). It\'s impossible to filter every single variation of a swearword, because more and more varieties will just be made to get around them.

Besides, Runescape\'s community is just a total headache, and the audience for the Pokémon MMO are likely to be even younger than that. To quote someone on another forum:

After having witnessed first hand the sheer number of dipshits populating an MMO of another franchise I\'m into - Star Wars - and knowing that Pokemon is primarily loved by children, an MMO is not a desirable prospect to me.

\"hi im asssh2009, dey wudnt let me pik ash Smilie\"
\"LFG! LFG!!!!! Need moltrez wil pay moneyz LFG!!!!!!!\"
\"K im mitsy, lets go hunt sum wooper or sum shit\"

Pokémon has more of a mainstream child appeal than Star Wars. Imagine how shit-tastic the community would be.

Oh god, the Pokémon MMO idea AGAIN? Give it up, it won't happen and it would suck anyway.

I'd love to see more action gameplay in the Pokémon series, either in a spin-off or in 5th gen. I can imagine 5th gen sticking fairly closely to the usual style though. A more action-based spin-off is definitely a possibily though, after stuff like Ranger. Smilie

Wait, about about an MMO style game.... but with out the MMO part? It sounds crazy, bu I'd think it'd work.

Something like WoW as in it's all real time, but make it a single player game; maybe a friend here or there, but mainly a single player game.

The former top user was Keven! You'd probably give birth to yourself 1000 times over until you sprout wings to fly away into the fading sun, that or you'd just turn into a lesbian. Who knows @_@ - L, 12/06/09

A Super Smash Bros style game with just Pokemon.

I want them to use an active battle system like final fantasy, then maybe the ability to move the pokemon around and able to dodge incoming attacks.

I could imagine my ideas being more possible on the Wii though, unless nintendo make a more powerful handheld.

I would like to see a completly new game like they did with D+P and not just remade versions of the old games. I have not played any of the spin-off games but I have heard that they are not that bad.

Whilst D&P had loads of new things, to me it still felt like Pokemon, the formula we've gotten used to on the GameBoy/Advance - I think what the games really need are more elements where you can use your pokemon in the story - not just fighting trainer after trainer, Team X after Team Y, a proper rival instead of a guy who just turns up randomly.

Y'know, a story?

I think that\'s the inevitable next thing. Colosseum and Ranger have better stories, but are still pretty basic, however they show more than the mainseries game that Pokémon has great story potential.

I will actually rage if 5th gen involves team trying to get legendaru Pokémon and kid fighting them on the way to battle Gyms and League. I like Gyms and League, but they gotta mix it up.

EDIT: And don\'t diss Barry, he\'s an awesome rival. Blue was a jerk and Silver was a whiny \"misguided\" type. Barry is a real rival >=o
