Just got this game and I'm loving it so far. The music is ace.
Currently have 41 stars. My only complaint is that it is a tad too easy.

From GameSpot that is...

Hopefully it'll be everywhere's GOTY #1 Smilie it deserves it I think. The competition this year was really fierce too, and it really was a great year for games. You need an incredible game to go up against incredible competition as they said...

I'm also a bit surprised to hear that from GameSpot, since they're always to judgemental about the Wii. And it is a long game. It just takes a week of doing nothing else to complete it Smilie

Depends how you see long I guess Smilie

And I could tell they were finding it hard to describe with words too. If I was some naive little guy who went on there and had never played Mario Galaxy before, I wouldn't understand why they chose it as GOTY, because the footage wasn't jaw dropping, rather playing the game itself is.

My Second Opinion: One of the best games I've ever played. Smilie

EDIT: Seems easy at first, though later parts in the game (only a few though) are frustrating for the very best of gamers. Let's remember who we are now. Smilie

And yeah, it is a little harder with the "secret character". Though I would have welcomed a proper hard mode with the most open of arms.

Well it's the best out of the bunch in my opinion, I suppose if you end up getting a 360 or a good PC one day you will get around to playing those other games. Galaxy is a lesson in quality game design to all developers, it is a masterpiece and I love it Smilie.

Remember PC games are

Just wondering, what is the general stance on only having to get 60 stars to get to the final boss? Personally I hated it... Even though I intended to get all 120 stars anyway, as soon as I didn't have to get any more it started feeling like a bit of a chore. It annoyed me that I didn't even have to do any of the later levels to complete the game too. I can't imagine what it'd be like if you were some silly casual gamer who just thought it was over and completely missed out on the last few galaxies...

And personally I think one of my favourite galaxies has to be the big icey one. I love skating around on the ice, and I love the look of snow and ice even more. Not sure if I could say it's my 'favourite' level overall though...

Is STALKER particularly fantastic? It looks good and they're selling it dirt cheap on Steam. I'm tempted.

I'm tempted to get Crysis too but I had some annoying issues with the demo like it being FUCKING DIFFICULT.

Yeah, I didn't like that either. I thought you should've had to have gotten a good 20 or so more stars before you could go to the last battle. I got 90-odd before I went for it if I recall correctly (it's in this thread somewhere). I've still not got all 120 to be honest as I lost motivation - I'll go back and do it one day, but I've pretty much seen everything.

I'm just too stubborn to give up once I decided to get them Smilie It did annoy me though, especially the fucking Purple comet stars. In fact,

WORST. IDEA. EVER!

Seriously, why replace 8 red coins with 100 purple ones, 8 of which are just as difficult to find/get as the 8 red coinsin Mario 64? It makes no sense...

I also got about 90 before going for the last boss I think. Seems most people got about that many. I'm sure it was 80 stars to get to the last boss in 64 wasn't it? That seems like a far more sensible number to me. I did really like the later levels though, so I'm glad it didn't just trail off.

One other thing that was a bit disappointing was the lack of cap-like powerups (As in ones that weren't just exactly where you needed them when you needed them and never at any other time). There is one (Though I won't mention it incase it's too spoiler-y-ish) but it's a bit rubbish really, and you can't actually use it anywhere as far as I know...

Yeah, it was little things like that that tainted the experience. The last power-up was utterly pointless. I don't like the purple coins either, they're what're putting me off finishing it fully. I think I'm on about 110 stars.

Overall, though, the good more than outweighs the bad and it's still my game of the year.

Am I the only one who likes getting the Purple Coin stars? (Looks like it...) I think the Red Coin stars would have been a bit overused, and some of the purple coin stars are a frenzy with a time limit, personally I liked those as they were actually a challenge for me, which I can't say about many things.

Also, as a responce to only needing 60 Stars, yeah that is a bit lame, at least 70 would have been a better idea, and casual gamers who just leave it at that... it's definitely their loss. Melty Molten Galaxy and Toy Time Galaxy are some of the most orsum galaxies ever. Especially Melty Molten. Missing out on that is simply inexcusable.

EDIT: Mario 64 and Sunshine needed 70 to get to the final boss I think. I didn't go to the final boss until I had 104 Stars, that's every Star that's possible to get before unlocking the purple comet.

Galaxy is also a bit linear I think, but I think tht also helps with the fun of the stages, since I've found the replay value much better than in other games. I found playing through again with the *secret character* almost as fun as playing it the first time, maybe that's just me, 'cos I'm a bit of a fan of his Smilie

Linear? It's no more or less linear than 64 or Sunshine... You can get to the final boss without even doing half the levels, and that's just CRAAAAAYZEH!!

If I remember correctly, in Mario 64 you needed 70 Stars to get through the last Bowser door, but then there was that infinite staircase, and you couldn't get up THAT unless you had 80. Think it was 70 in Sunshine, and now it's 60 in Galaxy... Will it be 50 next? O_o

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

I hear this game has multiple endings depending how many stars you get. i have 120 so i must have seen the full ending?

Well, if you have 120 with *secret character* then you can get the full secret ending. And something else. Maybe.

But yeah, the ending is a bit longer when you have 120 stars.

When I say linear I mean the galaxies themselves, rather than in Bob-Omb Battlefield or Delfino Harbor, there's a pretty much set path to use your platforming skills along, but in Mario 6 and Sunshine, there were more town based levels which were quite free indeed, and every star for each level had the pretty much same layout, just stars in different places, while in Galaxy paths to other stars are blocked off.

Makes it more like a 2D platformer I guess. Smilie

And I think you can go through the door to the infinate stairs as soon as you unlock that top room in Mario 64, but you need 70/75 stars or sommet to get up.

Unless you utilise a glitch. Smilie

Oh right yeah, I thought you meant the game in general. Yeah the levels were a bit linear really... Quite a big bit. It did kind of annoy me at first, but because all of the galaxies are so different, and since you're taking a different path through them for each star it wasn't so bad. The 'big' planets were still tiny though, and I would have liked some big areas to run around in. The Hub was shit, it's so friggin tiny. Might as well just be a level select screen to be honest >_>

And I don't remember the ending being longer with 120 stars... Unless you mean 120 stars with both, in which case that's 240 silly ;3

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

The ending is a bit longer.

Meh, I didn't think the hub was so bad. I think it annoyed me less than Delfino Plaza, which annoyed me for some reason. I guess Nintendo figured they didn't need a big hub, besides, less secret stars means more levels.

And personally I think it beats a level select. Smilie

Well the secret stars were just replaced with the levels in which you can only get one star. It's just that now they're not remotely hard to find, so you don't feel good when you get them.

Delfino Plaza wasn't even big either... TINY compared to Peach's Castle in Mario 64... I don't remember anyone complaining about that. Much easier to get around too. Plus it was an awesome place to test out abilities, wall jump and of course, dive on rooftops, Press A to jump out of the slide and then run ridiculously fast for no reason until you hit something.

O.k, maybe that last bit was just me... But I never got why doing that makes you run so fast

Also, 120 with both is 240... 121 with both is 242. Silly ;3

With Sunshine, you could get to the last boss when you finished the first seven episodes of each level. When you do that you can't really get any more stars until you beat the last boss as the entire place floods. So you could get to the last place with just 50 stars (if you did absolutely nothing extra at all in Delfino plaza)

I still haven't played Galaxy Smilie

Unlucky Oni, it is a rather awesome game. I completed it (60 stars) recently, and I enjoyed it. That's... about all I can say. I can't say it's the BEST THING EVAR, but I guess it's up there with SM64...

...the thing is that I can't really compare it to Super Mario 64. The game is a classic, and that's how it stays in the minds of us on the forum who remember having a N64 on launch day. So to compare another game to it would be madness because of our retro childish bias... the same applies to TP and OoT.

Not for me ;3 I never really found OoT that earth-shatteringly amazing myself, even at the time. It was just a really good Zelda game. If I was to be perfectly honest I think I may have enjoyed Twilight Princess a bit more...

Neither of them beat Link's Awakening though.
Actually that's probably where my bias comes in ^^;

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

I guess everyone has their faves, but I definitely prefer Galaxy over Sunshine, no question. It's up there with Mario 64 for me too, and Super Mario 64 could not have had a more worthy sequel.

Unlike TP/OoT, Mario Galaxy has enough differences from Mario 64 to be a full new experience. Flying through the universe, even though it's a little linear, is one of the most fantasic gaming experiences I've had, and if anything I feel the linear part makes it a little better.

And I prefer Link's Awakening to LttP, does that make me a bad person?

It's not just you, I loved doing that too Smilie but more than anything I loved to spray a little water in front of me and then run up and dive into it, which would for some reason let me slide incredibly fast until I crashed, as if I was sliding in water, but I wasn't. Smilie
Also, 120 with both is 240...121 with both is 242. Silly ;3
You didn't get the hidden meaning... did you? Smilie

Anyone notice that if you do a ground pound while spinning, Mario does a special animation?
