Can't wait til I have it next Thursday (Gameplay FTW!). I think it might be the kind of game that has to be played and some people will hate it, others love it. Has to be better than the 360 version, anyway.

Poor, poor 360. Smilie

I've seen a coupla videos where your rings just disappear when you get hit - do they, I mean being able to survive by picking your rings up again in all Sonic games (bar Sonic for Master System) was a real saving feature.

Cubed3 Admin/Founder & Designer

yeah - but you don't lose all your rings when you get hit - you only lose some of them - I think it depends on what you get hit by that determines the amount you lose - they're almost like a "life" bar now.

You forget about begin able to collect lost rings pretty fast - because of the way its build - collecting those rings might not be worth the hassle of the "back and forth" movement you'd have to do.

Awesome, but how about Boss battles - usually in Sonic you can pick up your rings after being hit by a boss, that kinda thing will mean we'd need to up our skills or something.

That IGN review is dissapointing, i had hoped that this title would reinvigorate the series as that's what really was needed here, but it sounds like i did not deliver as well as it could have.

Hopefully a sequel will build upon the good points here, it's always a shame when you have to hope for a sequel so soon lol. LS- is very dissapointed Smilie

What Sega have been missing is the awesome level design, who here remembers the closing wall on Hydrocity II, the Metropolis cogs and above all, the Ledge Jump on Wing Fortress? Sonic was cleverer than people gave it credit for, because it was so fast, nobody remembers the awesomeness that is more subtle.

That's what it's all about I think... Every single Sonic game since Sonic & Knuckles has been plagued by infinite drops that just span a ridiculous amount of the level. In Sonic Rusy if you even jump at the wrong time you fall into a hole and die and it just makes the whole thing feel really cheap. The original Sonic games had levels with the occasional black hole in. New Sonic games just have black holes with the occasional bit of level in

yep - skills will have to get stepping up - and the boss battles are WAY different now. Normal Sonic boss battles = avoid getting hit by the enemy - jump on them when open to do so -- quite different - Its a nice change of pace.

I think that as you get into SoftheR you'll see wonderful level design - some really out of nowhere moments happen to pull you back into the action and thats always a plus.

Yeah but level design that doesn't include gaping holes is easy when you don't have any control over where you go

Also, SoftheR? I think you mean SatR...

I'm not sure what you mean by gaping holes - they're there - you control - it works?

and HA - I goofed - but SatSR would be best - if one was to make an issue of out the idea.

Ah well - you knew what game I meant Smilie

I wouldn't completely trust a sole review, or a single website, but generally the game has been given a decent reception - 70s/80s, Bs and Cs - I'd wait till you give it a shot before passing too much judgment..

Cubed3 Admin/Founder & Designer

By gaping holes I mean all the levels in all the 3D Sonic games are either boarded up with invisible (or visible walls) OR they seem to be just a bunch of floating platforms in a giant void, and if you jump off the edge you die. That's not a problem in Secret Rings because you have no control over where you go, because it's a boring on-rails racer of some sort...

And yeah I meant SatSR, typo <.<

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

Its not "boring" because its "on rails" - its on a path in order to make the speed of Sonic work in 3D - I think that the "tilt" of the WiiMote wouldn't work half as well and we'd be playing it like all the other 3D Sonic games.

Go play it! I think you might find yourself suprisedSmilie

I had to bump this to add one thing

I've been reading how others wish they got all the skills and speed right from the beginning but - I think this gives the missions meaning - it makes me feel like "I have to complete this mission to get faster and stronger" - rather than "I'm not good at this mission - I'll do something else".

Furthermore - The controls and the movement of sonic improves as well - at the beginning - you feel like it doesn't matter what you do because it isn't "smooth" - those who are starting to get there are the only ones who truly understand what I mean - but its like you're growing use to the speed of the blue blur and can cope with handling him as time moves along.

Its a lot of fun! and my favorite cheesey song so far is in the Dino level

the vocals are like "Dino! ....Dino! WICKED WILD!"
haha - I love it.

I'm expecting GameSpot to be Negative, they always are.

I believe the boss battles will be Similar to Sonic Rush's boss battles, & Sonic Advance 2, since they'll be always moving.

I sure hope there's at least one song in the game I'll like.

The thing with Sonic, is that nowadays, because of recent times, he's hard to like, if SEGA keep up at this pace, I'm sure they can renew him. IGN would have possibly given it a better rating if the other recent Sonic games were a bit better.

EDIT: Gamespot reviewed it. It got a surprisingly good 7.6. That was from GAMESPOT.

Y'know what, that means it's absolutely amazing.

From what I've seen it's just impossible to avoid most obstacles, and yet it's impossible to die at the same time. Then again people who do the videos for Gamespot etc... are always shit >_>

haha ^^completely agree - I've seen them blow balls at just about every Wii video I've seen. From Rayman to to Metal Slug - ah well. Just cuz you review games don't make you good at them I guess.

haha.

Meh, I'll master it easily. Smilie

I'll have finished it within a week, I'll bet. If I had the brains & the knowhow to post a video of how awesome I was, then I would.

I dunno how though Smilie

You mean thats a review from the really fat guy who gave Wii sports a bad review because he couldn't play it properly lying down on his couch!?Smilie

Well I guess titling doesn't require as much effort.

Probally.

GameSpot tend to give good games much less than they deserve. Except Red Steel, they were right about that.

Yah, that measn Sonic is actually worth 8.6/10 Smilie

Good to see it's far better than the Xbox360/PS3 version, this'll definitely be one to get, only a week to go for us European folk!

Sonic Team in 'we can still make a good console game' shocker - this is GREAT.

Got my copy this morning and I've put about an hour and a half into it so far, just completing missions on the tutorial level and the first area, the desert (though I've unlocked the second area, I've not gone on it yet). It completely craps all over Sonic 360, Sonic Heroes, possibly even Sonic Adventure. In short: 3D Sonic is no longer dead to me if they keep on making them like this. The game's supposed to get better and better with every stage also, so I'm bloody excited.

Graphically it's EASILY the best looking title we've seen on Wii so far, and it really should be the standard. There're some rough ground textures, but it doesn't matter so much because it can get rather fast, and the flame, water and random particle effects (particularly on the first boss stage's projectiles) are ace. Sonic looks nice too. Musically it isn't as good, but it's not offensively bad as some reviews seem to have made out. I'd kill to have music the standard of Mega Drive games over it, and it probably is worse than even the Adventure/Heroes games, but I can put up with it. I would've even preferred it was 'cheesy so bad it's good' music like the Heroes theme, but nevermind. The cut scenes are well done too, I love the style - though there is a HIDEOUSLY cheesy moment just before the first boss which made me put my face in my hands. You’ll know it when you see it. It’s just NOT Sonic, which is especially embarrassing after a few cut scenes in which it seems like attitude-y Sonic is back, being all sarcastic. Oh, and definitely switch the voices to Japanese with English subtitles, it’s much less ear-screechingly bad.

The controls are intuitive and easy to grasp, it’s very simple to adjust quickly - feels natural. Homing attacks by jumping and then jabbing forward aren’t awkward and gives you a visceral feeling of destruction since you’re almost physically smacking into them yourself. The backstepping is a bit of an issue in that it’s slow, but you get a few abilities early on in the game that negate this. On the topic of the abilities, interesting addition; I’m in favour of it. Can’t see all of the abilities being that useful, though. Gameplay overall seems good, and the mission structure seems to be alright, but there are some annoying things like gaps of death, which means the frustrating ‘you’ve got to learn the levels’ thing is back. It has generous checkpoints though, so it isn’t as bad as it is in, say, Sonic Rush. I also enjoy the fact that you're rewarded with some kind of unlockable, whether it be a new level, a new party game or a new bonus, after every mission completed, makes me want to keep playing.

My expectations have been surpassed thus far. I don’t know what’s gone on at Sonic Team - whether the Wii has inspired them, whether it’s that team members have come and gone, or what. Whatever it is, they’ve succeeded in doing something that I had hoped for but wasn’t sure if they could in their form of the last few years (with exception to the Project Rub games on DS) - they’ve made a quality title, and a Sonic one no less.

Oh, and I hope a select few known Sonic fans on the forum have enjoyed their 'gift' from me on their Wiis today. Smilie

Is Sonic Secret Rings out today in Europe? There is some new Wii came out this week, isn't there?

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."
