802.11G transmits at 54 Mbit/s, that is faster then any internet connection that youll be able to get so it wouldnt be the wireless the bring you down.
So why is the internet on my sisters laptop so slow when she goes upstairs?
I think it is because it is harder for the laptop to establish a connection but once it has, then it can connect at those speeds.
But thats not what I said...I said its slow, not slow to connect.
I dont see there being a logical reason for speed to be slower when moving away from it. You either have a connection at a certain speed or not. Distance will not affect speed, only signal strength.
Oh for fucks sake. Im talking about objects, i.e. walls, in between, hindering radio waves. This is becoming a joke.

Stop being a dick. In my opinion things in the way only affect the strength of the signal and not the speed.

Woooooooo!!!

In my opinion

Who cares what you're opinion is? We're talking the science of radio waves.

Yes, and poor signal strength results in a slower speed, speaking from experience.

I spent half an hour of my day today watching a kid from my Sociology class playing wow over the college wifi on his laptop. he was lagging like hell because he couldn't get a good signal.

You know on a mobile phone when you get crap signal, the voice skips etc? Same thing, you miss bits of data.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

We are here to give opinions. I think some people would like to here my opinion. I couldn't care less if you did because you speak to people like dirt. I also have a laptop running on wireless so I will have my own opinions on the matter. Speaking from my experience.

Woooooooo!!!

But what use is an opinion in this context?

It could be my opinion that the Wii will support 1080p, but I'd be wrong because fact says it won't.

In your opinion, WiFi defies the laws of physics. Proven science says it doesn't, so bloody well admit oy're wrong!

I only talk to people like this when they make mistakes and refuse to admit it.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Ed is 100% right, anything in the way of your router and console or whatever will result in lots of packet loss and data transfer is then greatly reduced as packets will have to be resent. It's not rocket science. Admit it when you're wrong.

My point though is that I do not experience a slow down with the internet depending on where I am. It depends on which router I am connected to. If my signal strength is very low I still get the same speed I would from excellent. I may however have to wait a couple of seconds on very low for the information to start coming through, but when it does it downloads at the same speed as it would on an excellent connection.

Woooooooo!!!

That is more likely the limitation fo the servers you download from and not wireless being amazing and defying proven science.

You've reached the water table. Any deeper and you'll drown.

Please! Just take the rope! We can get you out of this hole!

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

I am not saying that wireless does defy science. I understand what you two are saying too. Maybe I just have crap internet connections! Smilie

Woooooooo!!!

I put it in simple terms for you. You get the train straight to a destination, you are pretty unlikely to get lost. If you get the car to that destination then there is a greater chance that you'll get lost. This will slow your journey down.

Either that or a killer internet connection.

Anyway- my whole house is running on a wireless connection, and its all very fast, no problems. It may be your hardware that is limiting the speed Grumbler? Or you may have interference from other wireless stuff around- I have an option of turning on "intereference robustness" which sorts that.

My house has very thick walls, you get a 70% signal with the router on one side and the wireless card on the other.

Look, stop bickering. Bad signal results in slower speeds. Otherwise whats the point of even having bad signal as a concept- what is it, if it doesnt mean that you miss bits of data and thus it takes longer to download?Anyway- my whole house is running on a wireless connection, and its all very fast, no problems. But have you tested it against your wired speed properly? Im not tlaking about browsing websites, thats a few hundred kb's.

I doubt it. I have the one router that refuses to connect tio my DS. I was not ammused. My laptop seems to be able to connect to it from another country though.

Hmm my laptop is from my work though and is brand new and has stickers plastered all over it talking about signal up technology with high efficiency antenna technology. I shall stick my nose out and say that that probably is the reason why.

Woooooooo!!!

A quick question- If the Wii is in sleep mode, how will it manage to download stuff through Wi-Fi? I'm pretty sure Wi-Fi isn't exactly the most power-conservitive thing in the world. WiiConnect24 must be really magical, indeed.
