MercurySteam, the development studio behind Konami's Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series, including Mirror of Fate for 3DS, has confirmed it is the driving force behind Nintendo's reimagining of Metroid II: Return of Samus for Nintendo 3DS.
Metroid: Samus Returns was a surprise announcement on Nintendo Treehouse: Live at E3 2017 and will arrive ahead of the hotly tipped Metroid Prime 4, which is being worked on (not by Retro Studios) for 2018.
Metroid is one of the most recognised Nintendo franchises and we are so honoured to collaborate with the company on the latest game in the saga of space-faring bounty hunter Samus Aran. Our collaboration with Nintendo will give gamers around the world the chance to play this fantastic adventure in a completely new way not seen before.
- Enric Alvarez, Head of Studio at MercurySteam. The development of this Metroid game with MercurySteam has gone very smoothly and more than anything, it has been very exciting. Metroid: Samus Returns is based on the Game Boy classic Metroid II: Return of Samus, and we are very confident that this collaboration with MercurySteam is the reason we have been able to successfully pull together various features like actions never seen before in the Metroid series, a stunning recreation of the planet SR388 and classical Metroid gameplay elements into a single powerful package.
- Yoshio Sakamoto, Senior Officer of Nintendo's Entertainment Planning & Development Department, and Producer of the overall Metroid franchise.
Metroid: Samus Returns launches exclusively for Nintendo 3DS on 15th September.
