After just a few days on the market, Mario Kart 8 has sold over a million units across the globe.
Launching in Japan on the 29th May, followed closely by European and North American releases on the 30th, the Wii U title managed to take in over 1.2 million units.
The current record holder for most popular Mario Kart entry goes to the Wii release, which has sold over 35 million as of 31st March 2014, followed closely by the Nintendo DS release at 23.56 million and the Nintendo 64 edition at 9.87 million.

Nintendo of Europe president Satoru Shibata said that "such positive early feedback for Mario Kart 8 reinforces the great gameplay experiences that Wii U currently offers".
