Captain Rainbow Unveiled with Debut Trailer

By Shane Jury 09.07.2008 32

Japanese Gaming Magazine Famitsu has shed light on one of Nintendo's newest and strangest projects, Captain Rainbow.

Back in February of this year, Nintendo patented Captain Rainbow, and through the latest Famitsu issue, we get to see what it's all about.

Developed by Skip, who also created the cult hit Chibi-Robo for the Gamecube, and to be published by Nintendo, Captain Rainbow has a distinctive Japanese flavor, and sees the main hero, named Nick, fighting off bad guys.

A rather...unique trailer of the game in action is below, accompanied by a character many will find familiar.

Could this be the new i.p Nintendo mentioned? Have your say on this oddity below.

Looks really strange, but at the same time it's good to see a new Nintendo I.P.

I love the style of the visuals, they remind me of Viewtiful Joe's. Other than that, I'm not sure what else to say, it's hard to tell what's really going on in the trailer.

Hopefully it will turn out to be a decent game though.

Rainbow POWER!!!!

I see that Birdo is in it.

Looks like it should be a Wiiware game. But maybe it wont.

I like the graphical style, although it looks like it plays like lost in blue with the camera angle. Just a different type of game.

Doesn't look technically too impressive, but at least, looks stylish ^^. It's the kinda kitsch atmosphere that gives you a good laugh. Makes me think a bit of Viewtiful Joe, but in a different kind of game.

I\'m still trying to figure that one out. Info is sketchy, but Nintendo filed the Trademark, so I\'d point to them.Smilie

Plus there is no Capcom Logo in the Trailer. Smilie

Non-gamers I can understand, but I thought gays already played games...

This game looks mad. Birdo's looks F up but tranny vision looks cool..

Ha, trust birdo to be involved with captain rainbow.

SmilieSmilie I just cracked up, it looks so stupid... I love it. That's what we need Nintendo, some new obscure crap like this. Smilie Skip seems to be doing a lot of the weird games, like Chibi Robo and Giftpia. Too bad Giftpia never made it outside Japan...

Captain Falcon is no longer the campest 'Captain' in gaming. Well done Nintendo Smilie

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

interesting, but looks boring to play in my opinion. I\'ll have to see more of that game, I can\'t tell if its gonna be good or not. (birdo\'s voice scared me!)

EDIT: Also, this looks like a WiiWare title at best.

Looks like it could be fantastic.

Allthough Birdo looks terrible....not high polygon enough for a gamecube game, yet too high to be stylisticaly low.
Either have Birdo more comic, or more real...not this inbetween.

Rest of the style looks great though.

OMG, Birdo looks creepy.

I like how colourful Rainbow Man is but hate his design. Like Birdo, it's creepy.

LOL, WTH is this?! Smilie

Look's very interesting.

More like Captain Fagget. This doesnt look fun at all..but I'll just have to see more footae, and understand the story I guess.

Wha... what?

I think I'm going to have to hear more about this before I draw any conclusions.

I hope that stays in Japan...that was the stupidest thing i have ever seen from Nintendo.

A fail so epic, it may just be a win.

Looks pretty fun... Why Birdo? WHY!?

Anyway, when I first saw the trailer, the first thing that came to my head was that it was a Chibi-Robo spin off, yes, before I\'d even read the part about Skip making it. My worry is it will be too similar in style, which also makes me worry about Chibi\'s hope of a sequel.

Otherwise I think it\'ll be good.

EDIT: Anyone who thinks it looks shit hasn\'t played Chibi-Robo and therefore don\'t deserve an opinion.

SuperLink, I would get rid of that edit as quick as possible as I were you, I sense a FLAME WAR approaching.

But it\'s entirely true. The game doesn\'t look crap, you\'re just not used to the developer\'s style.

I\'m willing to bet those who think it looks crap ALSO think Chibi-Robo looks crap. And if they have played Chibi-Robo I can\'t understand why they\'d think this looks crap, because it looks amazingly similar.

EDIT: By the way, Chibi-Robo is amazing.

This is going to be huge. I called it first.

Guys this except from IGN explains some aspects of the Game.

Captain Rainbow tells the story of a hero of the same name and his every day alter-ego Nick. Rainbow is the star of a television show in the land of the free, Mameruka (this could be a pun on "America"). Thanks to the appearance of some unpopular characters, the ratings for his show have tanked. In order to gain back the show's popularity, Nick decides to head off to Mimin Island. Something happens along the way, however, and Nick learns that he is the only person who can help out the residents of Mimin.

And those residents happen to be the second tier characters from the Nintendo family. Actually, maybe third tier is a more accurate description. The characters you encounter here may be recognizable by only the most hardcore of Nintendo fans. Would you recognize Ossan, the character from the original Famicom Golf? How about Hikari, from Famicom Mukashibanashi (this latter title was only available in Japan)? More people, at least in America, should be familiar with Catharine, the Super Mario Bros. 2 boss who spits out eggs at you.

It's a bit unclear what you'll be doing as you take control of Nick and Captain Rainbow and meet all these characters. While the game offers a variety of activities like fishing, bug collecting, and golf, the actual point of the title is being kept under wraps. There seems to be a side scrolling action component to the game, but it's possible that this is just one aspect of the game. -----IGN

Oooh, I love the bit about the 3rd tier Nintendo characters. I wonder how many I'd be able to recognise. XD

Birdo/Catherine is hardly 3rd tier anymore though.
