A new console is always exciting!
I don't have a WiiU yet, but I've got a Wii (just don't have as much free time or spare money to play new games right now). If you don't have a Wii already, be sure to go through the Wii library. Most Wii games should be fairly cheap (especially used), and a good game is a good game forever. Since the WiiU can play Wii games, this might be a good way to get some great games on the cheap. There are some real gems if you know where to look.
Okami is one of my favorite games I've ever played. Gameplay wise, it gets compared to Zelda quite a bit, and it's sooo pretty. If you've got a few minutes, here's a fair review of the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVf2rMILU0M
Sin and Punishment is an old school, arcade style shooter. It's difficult and definitely feels "Japanesey," so it's not to everyone's taste. But I see it cheap a lot and it's wonderful if you're into those kinds of games.
Super Mario Galaxy is of course amazing. When I was playing it, I distinctly remember thinking that it was the most fun I've had with a video game in a while. There's also Galaxy 2 to look at.
Rayman: Origins is a 2D platformer that's on the Wii. The sequel, Rayman: Legends is a WiiU game and is supposed to be really top notch, too.
