I hate it!

Sonic 2 on Megadrive is a game with moments that range from "OK" to "painfully bad". The levels are too easy - they're just fast and require no real skill. If you can do Sonic 1 you will breeze through the levels in a matter of minutes without losing a single life. However, the boss battles against Robotnik are so frustrating. They require no skill and are the type of levels that you either do it the first time or spend ages and lose all your lives. When you complete them, you don't think "wow, that was really hard, I did well" you instead think "thank god I got lucky and its over now". Makes the game unbalanced and random.

OK, it has its moments, its extremely fast for a start and it has some stunning levels that look 10x better than Sonic 1. But there are too many downsides.

People criticise 3D-sonic - well, here I am criticising a 2D-sonic game. The other 2D-sonic's are great, just not this.

... Smilie

I'm gonna disagree, Sonic 2 had huge levels, (not the ones you could rush through however) like oil ocean and the immensly difficult metropolis zone, All the boss battles , like sonic in general are pattern based and once you work that out its easy, The only thing I can really say, I hate that, is the lack of saving and maybe some of the "leaps of faith"

I don't think it's quite as bad as your making out Beam. Okay it's far from the best in the series, but it was the bridge between Sonic 1 and Sonic 3, that I think was essential. Sonic 2 in general improved over the original and the same with Sonic 3 over 2. Without the middle 'man' the third entry in the series may not have been the amazing game it became.

Admittedly that's not enough to make it a good game though, but IMO you are being a bit hard on the game. It had some classic moments, and some very memorable ones too, more so than others perhaps. Such as the metal sonic boss.

Fair enough, fair enough. But don't you just hate the Casino Nights boss? The way you can never tell whether you're spinning or not, you never know where Robotnic is and even if you think you've got him you *Still* lose all your rings? Thats no skill, thats just luck.

I much prefer the original - thats a great game.

I'm sorry, but I personally think Sonic 2 was one of the best in the series. It was one of the first games I ever played (I started late!).

This is the first time i've wanted to shoot you Beam (well - hehe). Although it wasn't my favourite from the 4 Mega Drive titles (SK and 3 was), it did have some style and charm. Believe you me, the initial levels allowed players to enter the game with a hint of ease but it did become a lot more difficult and varied throughout. It was one of my favoured platformers of the time and even now - I can't seem to adapt to the 3D outings.

There's a varied range of levels - some extremely huge and open, allowing for exploration and perhaps being more cautious as to where you step - it was indeed a change from the original but still have the same style and charm.

Innovation - a key - there was a unique set of traps, enemies and whatnot that made the title so memorable - the cursive pink fluid in the chemical plant, the scorching heat in that Oil zone, the demonic anthem playing during Mystic Night and the cheesy but somewhat appealing Casino Night with the bloody slot machines! Classic.

The third and Knuckles was superb - nothing, lol, and I mean nothing for me can surpass that (well, platformers anyway) and at times it seems I'm still stuck in 1994 with Sonic and co.

Yep, Sonic 2 introduced Super Sonic, Tails, 2 Player Co-Op and 3rd person perspective 3D.
Sonic 3 introduced Knuckles, Special Shields, in-level bonus levels and 2-player Vs.

Sonic 2. took all the best bits from sonic 1 and doubled the levels. bosses are easy until metropolis, damn bubble shield thingy.

have you done Sonic 2 with the emeralds? that's the real challenge. for even harder times keep tails on. that git always loses rings in special stages.

death egg is the best final level ever, and it takes real skill to get past the egg robot.

not as good as S3&K or Sonic adventure 2 but sits quite comfortably at number 3.

Smilie Beam, how could you say such a thing!!!

Well, I really like Sonic, don't get me wrong - but Sonic 2 is deffinatly the worst in the series - yet for some reason it seams to be everyone's favorite.

can't believe I missed commenting on JB, it's mystic cave not mystic night.

My list

Sonic Mega collection
Sonic Jam (both due to having S3&K and more, SMC wins for having Ristar)
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Sonic adventure 2 (battle)
Sonic 2
Knux in Sonic 2
Sonic 1
Sonic Adventure (dx) (good but lacked charm. Also Big's fishing and pointless adventure stages)
Sonic heroes (lacks replay value, bonus modes, less challenges)
Sonic pinball party
Sonic CD (great game, but I couldn't map out the levels as well as I could the other sonic games)
Sonic advance (too generic. special stages were boring)
Sonic and knuckles (down here cause it's much better locked on, without lock-on it's rather pointless)
Sonic 3 (like S&K just with a save option making it far too easy)
Sonic battle (addictive but suffers from too many fundamental flaws)
Sonic advance 2 (too many leaps of faith, SP rings ruined it's pace)
Blue sphere's (boring)

Worst Sonic game (keeping to Sonic team), I don't think so.

How stange. About 15 hours ago, I was playing Sonic 2 for the first time in about 6 years. I used to love the game but then my MD broke and forgot about it. Then along came a copy of Sonic Mega collection.
I tried Sonic 1 and 3 but 2 is still my favourite. I died on metal sonic after about 1-2 hours (I forget) of playing Smilie

I think Sonic 2 was the first Sonic game I played. I only played it at a friends house, and I was young, but I enjoyed it. I liked being Tails and jumping on the baddies Smilie

I never did get past that damned Air level though....annoying.

...No one mention Sonic 2 to me. EVER.

No one mention Sonic 2 to me. EVER.

Why?

<739>

are you mad sonic 2 is one of greatest platformers of all time Smilie

i say sonic 1 the best ever Smilie

its a chocobo(lets get 2 chocobos and make a chocobo baby)"that is inapropriat" ff is the best

I love Sonic 2. It may not be as good as 3/Knuckles but it added so much more to the series. It was the first game I played on Megadrive at about the age of 6 and I still play it to this day ( on SMC now). I gotta say I am really good at it. I was playing it earlier and I completed it in just over an hour Smilie. The levels are a little short, I can do emerald hill zone 1 in 33 seconds, but its just got undying quality.

SPOILER ALERT DONT READ FIRST PARAGRAPH IF YOU NEVER GOT 100% IN SONIC 3 AND SONIC AND KNUCKLES (its a disgrace if you didnt it wasnt hard)

Sonic 3 and knuckles and Cd were the best 2d ones Sonic 3 and knuckles had SO MANY variations depending on how u played the game At first i didnt beleive my friends that super tails existed but its worth doing the whole game without any super form just to see his super form Without a doubt the best super form I mean he wasnt just a suped up version he had The FLickies to kick ass for him you hit an enemy once and the flikies all hit him like 10 times Hyper Knuckles was also Cool he climbed walls seriously quik ( I think hyper sonic was kinda rubbish I mean compared to the shock super sonic gave you i think hyper sonic shoulda been done Super saiyajin 3 stylee!!

Anyway Back on topic
Ahhhh sonic 2 I think what you are experiencing here beam Is Know as the game Showing its age. yes thats right The game is aging (and not very well in your opinion) All the signs are there when sonic 2 first came out most of those gripes you have would not come into the equation. Firstly Did you try to get all 7 emerallds (that was bloody tough) secondly The bosses were kinda hard to figure out their attack patterns I think you founf it was luck Because you didnt realise they all had set patterns.
Good game Though
A nice balance between the piss easinessness of Sonic 3 and knux and sonic 1

We're mentalist psychic Scots, which means we can read your mind. If you're lying, your head explodes and we laugh

Personally I found Sonic 2 the easiest of the series. I can easily run through without loosing any lives, in about an hour or so.
