A little while ago, a retail listing popped up on Gamestop's site and was promptly taken down. Now Sega's executive vice president of sales and marketing, Alan Pritchard, has confirmed a Dreamcast Collection is in the works.

In an interview in the January issue of Game Informer (Tomb Raider cover, issue 213), Sega's executive vice president of sales and marketing reveals that the company is going to release a Dreamcast Collection title that will compile some of the system's most popular games, similar to the Ultimate Genesis Collection title that was released this year.

When asked about the persistent rumours of a Dreamcast 2 console, Pritchard said the following:

"The Dreamcast fans are very devoted. You see on eBay people are still buying the games and system. We actually have a Dreamcast collection coming out soon. We are looking to bring some of the old Dreamcast games to market digitally and packaged. The titles are still to be announced. The Ultimate Genesis Collection did huge numbers on PS3 and 360, so it’s an important part of our business. We’ve already been releasing some Dreamcast games digitally; Crazy Taxi [for one]."

"Unless there’s something I don’t know - no one has told me about getting back into the console business."

Smilie

What games would you like to see feature in this collection?

3DS Code 2578-3122-0744

Shenmue and Shenmue II are obvious ones, I would want, but will those fit on a single disc? (especially with other games going there, as well).

It'd be convenient, for me. The PS3 is always plugged in and it has HDMI.

Shenmue please. Never played either but would love a chance to without the hassle of tracking the originals down + a Dreamcast. Smilie

Fucking amazing news! I have the SEGA Mega Drive: Ultimate Collection for my PS3. That was a really great disc. The one problem with it was that while all the Sonic games were featured, you couldn't play Sonic 3 & Knuckles. It had to be one or the other. Apart from that, it was as perfect as can be expected.

Maybe not on 360, but I'm sure the 50GB that PS3 discs provide would be more than enough. Though I suppose content will have to be equal across both formats. Space won't be an issue on PS3, but because it will be on 360, PS3 will suffer too.

Note: Aren't SEGA amazing for doing these collections? Most companies like to release the games separately for big prices. One thing, shouldn't there be a SEGA Saturn: Ultimate Collection first?

I'd love to see a Sega Saturn collection. Athlete Kings and Virtua Fighter were great. Smilie

How many Dreamcast games could they fit on a Dual-Layered DVD?

I think Dreamcast game discs could be up to 1.2GB, and the XBOX Dual layered have just shy of 8GB due to security, so around 6 or 7 games with full discs. But I guess they'll have to do stuff to make them play on new consoles so increasing the sizes

A full blown 'Sega Collection' disc on PS3 containing games from every Sega console would be one of the best things in the history of ever Smilie

I think the 360 discs only hold about 6GB because of those security measures. Honestly, I think DVD sizes is the biggest limiter on the 360 right now. Sort of like the problems the 'Cube had last generation.

Gotta give props to Sega for doing this though. As Martin said, most companies, like Nintendo, would be releasing them one at a time.

Indeed. The shit thing is that since this will be a cross-platform release (probably missing out the Wii), that 6GB limit will also apply to the PS3 version. When it comes to these collections, I wish they'd just absolutely make the most of each platform. So what if 360 discs can't hold that much? That's no reason to fuck the PS3 version in the ass.

It's kind of a rubbish collection, not one of those games interested me back when the dreamcast was new or interests me now.

That collection was pretty average. Only four games and Bass Fishing is one of them! Smilie

So, is that it? What a disappointment.

Me (guest) 24.02.2011#14

2 of them are already available on the PSM/live Arcade.

Part of me wants to buy this in the vain hope that they'll release another more weighty collection. It's not like the DC doesn't have utter gems, because it does. Sonic Adventure sucks balls, Bass Fishing just is what it is. Space Channel 5 admittedly was great. Crazy Taxi was also great. Still, totally shabby collection.

Hope there is a second collection at some point, i would like to try jet set radio and I wouldn't mind getting to play skies of arcadia on the 360!

Keep dreaming I highly doubt you'll get a collection of quality games on one disc from Sega or any other company for that matter (Bar Valve). They know games like Shenmue and Shenmue II are heavy hitters with fans, and that you will pay good money for a port i.e. you'll fork out full price for a port of just Shenmue alone.

That's a bit disappointing, I've played 3 out of the 4 games there (Sonic, Bass Fishing, Crazy Taxi), never got to play Space Channel 5 but I'm sure that it's awesome.

I guess they might do a Dreamcast Collection 2, depending on this one's success.

It's just a question of whether they can accept that nobody is buying it because the games are shit and/or irrelevent, rather than due to the concept in general.

There are plenty of DC (and Saturn, Xbox, PS2, GC games) I would happily pay for modern ports of.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Why include Crazy Taxi and Sonic Adventure when you just released them for PSN and XBLA anyways? It seems like they could have put other games in there instead.

Chu Chu's, Jet Grind Radio, House of the Dead, Ecco. So many really good 1st Party titles that they had and which they could have used instead. I haven't seen SC5 in forever and I've never played Bass fishing so I can't go out and say that those where bad games to put in. Overall, this could have been better.

Mario, Mega Man and Rayman FTW!!!

Because SEGA simply loveeee to port games and bring out shitloads of collections.
Basically milking the franchises out of every penny they can get.
