I pretty much bought it just for Gunstar Heroes, but the others are a bonus, as although I have another '6 in 1' cart for my MD, it shares none of it's games with this one. Been playing loads of Gunstar Heroes, this morning! The graphics are fantastic for the Mega Drive. Added bonus - it runs fine in 60Hz! Won't be bothering to get an NTSC cart of 'Heroes, then.

BURN IN HELL!

It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path.

It was a sequal and was actually pretty good. Think it\'s only downfall was that it was single player and very short.

Can you please stop reviving old topics?

PK the topic isn\'t that old, it\'s still of relevance.

PK WTF kind of answer is that? He is responding to the topic positively, there is no need for that sort of answer, sarcasm or no sarcasm. You just come across extremely childish, and is blatant spam on your part. This is why we don\'t get alot of new members. :sigh:

PK's answer was OK, because the guy was a dirty spammer who just copied what other people had already said in the thread to make it seem non-botlike.

But yes, I'm quite happy the thread was bumped, it was too short lived Smilie

I get a feeling of nostalgia playing old games that I didn't touch at the time, sometimes because they are like other games from my childhood, sometimes because I heard all about them when I was a kid from the more spoiled boys at school.

I like remakes, but I LOVE sequels to good games that do the original justice. There is little I hate more than a good franchise spoiled though. eg. AoE, HoMM, Settlers... rapists, murderers, none are as evil as the people responsible for destroying those series.

The Viagra guy copied my text!

Had a mate round the other night for a smoke and stuff, and we ended up playing through Bare Knuckle III, and a bit of other games. The general died though, so we got the bad ending. Was a lot of fun, though! In multiplayer, I don\'t think it\'s lost anything since it came out. We were laughing our heads off all the way through, pretty much. We also played some Final Fight 2, but decided it was rubbish compared to Bare Knuckle.

Sorry if this is an old post, but i really wanted to comment on this one =P.

- What do you think about remakes or reimaginings?
- Which series\' have gotten stronger or weaker over the last 20 years or so?
- Have you tried a \"retro\" game people seem to love so much? What were your own views on your experience?

1. IMO, it all just depends on the game. I would love to see remakes of certain turn based games, but only if there were kept turn based, and the story was not changed at all.

2. Final fantasy has gotten much weaker over the last few years. Though many people loved FFX, i was not impressed at all. While i did enjoy FFXI(i love MMO'S), i thought 12 and 13 were no fun at all. The reason is probably cause i'm so used to JRPGS that are turn based and i have grown to love that style of gaming.

3. Up until this year, i had never played Chrono trigger. I loved chrono cross so much( don't hate!), that i figured it was finally time to try it out. CC has probably become one of my favorite games of all time( and definatly one of the hardest).

Remakes in the video game world usually suck, but can be alright in certain regards. A good example would be Fire Red/ Leaf Green, it added the new content such as pokemon evolutions from latter games and added a bit of bonus content to the series. But they kept it at a minimum and didn't change too many aspects about the game series which is good. A perfectly bad example would be the new Fire Emblems for DS. First off they picked two of the weakest Fire Emblems to remake, and secondly they added WAY too much in terms of bonus characters and game mechanics.

- Which series\' have gotten stronger or weaker over the last 20 years or so?
I could go on forever about this, but I'll name a few I feel I've got good "expertise" on. Smilie

Fire Emblem- Overall gotten better (The DS ones are horrible though) throughout the years, gotten much more strategic, interesting, made each battle more unique and fun.

Pokemon- Overall gotten worse, though I liked the remakes, I didn't like them nearly as much as the originals, and generation after generation there have been more and more special event pokemon. It pisses me off that I cant get like half the pokemon without living in Japan. >.>

Zelda- Gotten better overall, (sans Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass) puzzles have gotten harder to solve, more unique items have been added in, and much cooler boss battles.

- Have you tried a \"retro\" game people seem to love so much? What were your own views on your experience?
I've always been told by the usual retro gamer crowd that I have horrible tastes. this is mainly due to the fact that I do not find 2d platformers fun, ie. I don't like Old Sonic, Metroid, Mario, or any of that stuff, which is why I wont judge those series. I haven't ever really been told of any retro games that were good besides 2d platformers and some rpgs. The rpgs I've pretty much felt were worse retro, because they didn't have the story/decent gameplay mechanics that they have nowadays.

Looking for something funny or compelling to put here.

There are only 9 Event Pokémon, 2 or 3 of which are actually pretty damn easy to get, and the rest of them have had plenty of WiFi Events around the whole world.

Living in Japan gets you a few perks, but really the difference isn't huge.

Pokémon's definitely gotten better |: there's so much more to do in them now, the games are fair and balanced.

Pokemon has definitely gotten better, It's just nostalgia that makes people say the old ones were better.
And the fact that the new ones are similar to the old ones, so I guess playing the new ones after playing the older ones will be just more of the same, and so not as fun.

Avoid Games Like the Plague, productivity++

I'll admit I'm pretty influenced by nostalgia. For example, when I get the retro cravings, I'll tend to go with relatively simpler titles, such as Zelda 1 and SMB1 even though I know that LttP and SMB3 are both better games than those two.

Another example of me being swayed by nostaligia is the Wiiware title FFIV: The After Years. I enjoyed it because it continues the storyline of one of my favorite childhood games. I'm ashamed to admit that if I'd never played the orginal FFIV, I'd probably view it as a complete piece of crap. Except maybe for the final dungeon, which was well done in my opinion.

I find nostalgia to be an issue.

Most people use it a whining tool, and a lot have terrible memories. My favourite "go to" examples are:

  • World of Warcraft - Players have a lot of issues with the current expansion in WoW, they scream and shout and call it bad. The current expansion has the most subscriptions to date, though. Nostalgic players claim that the raids (dungeons, bosses, etc) are too easy. However, Wrath (the current XPAC) has several of the hardest and longest to kill bosses. I believe that the top two longest time to kill since release bosses are in Wrath, one with 77 days and another with a large amount.

  • Pokémon - This is rather annoying, but I can sympathise with it. Others, along with myself, will claim that Pokémon Gold and Silver was the 'height' of the Pokémon era. Since then several version have been released. They are all good in their own way. I have completed Ruby three times, Emerald once, Pearl once and I'm currently playing Platinum, kind of. I played Pokémon Blue twice, the second time was required as I screwed up on on cloning my Venasaur. I played Gold once, I had a strong team with l.100s without cheating and a very long play time. I've loved every Pokémon portable RPG game (Read: Not that silly Ranger series), however I'm a bit meh on the Pokémon Remakes. I'm all for them, but I'm not as excited as I thought I'd be. It makes me quite sad that I'm not by Leaf Green was ~ and I've still not completed Heart Gold which I've had since release.

    - What do you think about remakes or reimaginings?
I'm pro remakes. See Phoenix Wright for DS on how awesome they can be, and those were just ports with tiny adjustments. Bring on FFVII for PS3 so I can finally finish it.

    - Which series\' have gotten stronger or weaker over the last 20 years or so?
I'd say Final Fantasy has gotten weaker. FFTA was amazing, their second attempt on the DS was poor. Games after FFIX have declined a bit, but is this due to my rose tinted nostalgia glasses? I liked X while playing it and loved X-2 while playing that, I just don't consider them of the same quality as VIII or IX. I look forward to trying XIII.

Mario and Sonic has declined since the side scrolling days. Mario 64 and Sonic: Adventure 2 BATTLE were the last good ones in their style. Galaxy, Knight, Shadow the Hedgehog and Unleashed are bad. Regardless of how reviews and adverts make out Galaxy to be.

    - Have you tried a \"retro\" game people seem to love so much? What were your own views on your experience?
The problem with this is build up. People will look back on a game with the fondest memories and probably make it out to be better than it is. Some reasons for its 'awesomeness' cannot be replicated if it were played today, such as graphics, atmosphere, state of mind and emotions, etc.

  • - What do you think about remakes or reimaginings?
There a bit hit and miss, they can shit all over your memories or allow you to get to know a game with out having to go back to awful graphics or crappy out of date game play.

Remakes that I have played recently that I loved:

    FFIV DS
    Bionic Commando Rearmed
    Monkey Island Special Editions
    Klonoa on the Wii
    Twin Snakes

So yeah I'm a fan but there is a danger of them messing it up bad!
Think that Rocket Night on Arcade was a bit flaky and rubbish apparently.

    - Which series' have gotten stronger or weaker over the last 20 years or so?

Definitely Sonic, he has had a good run on the handhelds as he stuck to 2D, even if the Rush games a fairly drastic departure, I still found them alot of fun.
I just can seem to enjoy 3D sonic games, there too awkward to controle for me and thats just not something I associate with sonic.
Maybe Colors will finally provide a 3D sonic game I can like?

Final Fantasy seems to have gone way down hill, tere was a time that I would never have belived I would not go out day 1 to get a Final Fantasy but I still have not yet played XIII ( waiting for it to become bargain bin material)

Bomberman while it still has the great core battle mode gameplay has had it's single player eroded away over the years. No one wants to buy a £35 bomberman game but developers don't want to spend that much on making a complete bomberman game on downloadable services.
I know most people do't really care about the single player modes in the games but they where a fun distraction when you tired of the multiplayer.

Monkey Ball has kind of deteriorated pretty poorly from a pretty major party game in obscurity.

Viewtful Joe kind of fizzled out which was a bit sad, would love to see a HD version of that franchise.

Can't really think on anything thats got stronger, I mean Mario has stayed pretty consistant, always putting out a good game but dunno if I would call that getting stronger, just consistant.

Halo has definitly improved in each iteration, the multiplayer features from 1 to 2 where huge with online play, from 2 to 3 was big with the replay features, forge and what not.

Never been a fan of GTA but it's definitely always 1uped it's last iteration and provided something new or taking advantage of new tech to make a engaging experience.

    - Have you tried a "retro" game people seem to love so much? What were your own views on your experience?

    SUPER METROID | SNES
Playing Super Metroid right not, it's pretty good so far, although the powerups just seemed to be handed to you withough much of a fight, the bosses are kind of easy as well compared to Fusion.
Controles are pretty clunky in comparison to fusion, L and R for aiming the arm cannon is weird.
Wall jumps are a fucking nightmare at times.

It's a great game but Fusion is definitely the better game imo, don't understand the hate for it.

    ALUNDRA | PSX
Tried to get into Alundra, heard a lot of people say it was a "Zelda Killer" or at the very least you would enjoy it if you liked Zelda.
Played it for about 8 hours but the sparse save points was a big issue for me compared to Zeldas save anywhere feature, the jumping mechanics where pretty poor as well.
Had areas where you could miss items and never get them again, thats poor level design in my opinion.
The story seemed a bit more fully fledged than a traditional Zelda but not enough to keep me playing.

    Parasite Eve | PSX
Actually really enjoyed this basically ResidentEvil/DinoCrisis RPG except not really scary at all, thanks to the rather cheesy music that play during fights!
Cheesy silly story as well but enjoyable, got a FF8 vibe from the graphics as it uses the same engine.

Would have loved to have got this game when I was 12!

    ( Edited 25.08.2010 14:05 by Jimmy2000 )

Regarding the Pokemon games, I cannot bring myself to play any of the first two generation games anymore. As much as I loved them, I've been spoiled by all the enhanced features of the recent games. I don't want to go back and have to switch boxes whenever it was full or only to be able to carry about 20 items etc etc. Smilie

I'd argue that Mario 64 has aged pretty badly. Mario controls more stiffly than he does now and I had far more frustrating moments with the camera than I have with any of the 3D Sonics (Not played Sonic 06).

My opinion of course but I definitely think nostalgia plays a huge role in the continued love for Mario 64. I only first played it a couple of years ago on the Virtual Console so I was hoping to see the greatness after Sunshine and Galaxy. Smilie Same with my love for Tomb Raider as most would see it as dated nowadays but I can still enjoy it just as much and never get bored. Smilie

Q: What do you think about remakes or reimaginings?

A: Can't really give a definitive answer, one way or the other. The 'remake/reboot' scene is far too much of a mixed bag. For example, I really bummed the remake of the original Resident Evil, so much so that it is my favourite RE title to date, surpassing RE4 and 5 in my opinion. On the other hand, we also have shite like Earthworm Jim HD.

Q: Which series\' have gotten stronger or weaker over the last 20 years or so?

A: Can't speak for every game series out there, but I have noticed a couple take different trajectories over time. The Worms series jumped the shark a long time ago. It's very telling that the best Worms game that has recently come out is the essentially 1:1 port of Worms Armageddon to XBLA. I suppose it's not quite the same, but it more or less is.

I think most series do actually get better as they go along, many just tend to seem tired after a while (Zelda), giving little reason for people who have played previous games to return to it. Many still do out of pure fandom, others go on to play different things. So it's half "is this better than the last one?" and half "does this reinvent the wheel enough for me?". Other factors of course matter, maybe the sequel brings nothing new, but you want to see where the story goes, etc.

Q: Have you tried a \"retro\" game people seem to love so much? What were your own views on your experience?

A: I'm not sure if I have, actually. I played a lot of the 'classics' that people drone on about when they were first released. One definite one was Snatcher. Obviously nobody had that in the UK back in the day. It was only ever released on the Mega-CD in this country, and both console and game flopped. I played it a couple years back on my PC (emulators and piracy ftw). I thought it was good, but text adventures never really grabbed me, so not really my kind of game.

Someone suggest an old classic that is readily playable on 360, PS3, pirateable on Linux, or can be gotten for N64 or Saturn. I have the last two, but haven't had them set up for ages. Oh, GameCube too. I can also play any region Mega Drive and SNES/SFC games, so do include them as well!

Have you given the special editions of Monkey island a go Martin? There good fun and they now have a hint system and voice acting making them much more bearable.
The writing can be funny at times and kind of Paper mario humour where it never really takes it self seriously.

Forgot to mention I got a hold of luigis mansion a few months back, it was a pretty enjoyable game, should have got that instead of rouge leader when I got my gamecube.
In saying though I can see why it sits around 78 on metacritic, it definitely gets quite repetitive.
Wouldn't mind seeing a sequal to that game as long as they mix it up a bit.

    ( Edited 25.08.2010 18:39 by Jimmy2000 )

Yeah I got the demo of the first one, and have one on PS2. They never really gripped me, though I didn't really give them a chance, either.

Nostalgia defines what kind of gamer we are and we'll be!Smilie

So much to play, so little time...
