Oh yeah.
Metroid Prime 3 popped into my letterbox this morning. I tried not to play it, as I've got reviews to do, but when I got home from work I just couldn't resist. I've been waiting for this game for well over a year, afterall, and it was supposed to be a launch title.
First impressions:
- Best menu screens I've seen in a long time.
- The visuals aren't too much better than the Gamecube Primes (subtle improvements, though, like extra effects on energy blasts, better textures and generally more going on - I doubt it could be done on the 'Cube without a fair bit of work, but it still doesn't really show off what Wii can do in a way that Mario Galaxy looks like it will).
- The loading times are a LOT better than before, and the game basically streams constantly so you don't get the 'jammed door' as you did in the 'Cube Primes very often. I've had it happen once so far. The lifts between floors also go faster to reflect the improvement in load speeds.
- Voice acting and character interaction, which I was worried about in a Metroid game, seem well done.
- Wii controls such as opening doors, activating levers, etc. are implemented well.
- The controls in general rock, they're extremely accurate even on the standard setting. My only gripe is the way that the visors are activated, but I'm getting used to it.
I've played the first hour or so and beaten the first boss. It's a nice easy ride that introduces you to the new controls and refreshes your memory at first, but then things get more interesting pretty quickly. It's screaming quality so far.
Wii owners, go and buy it. Go and buy it now.
