2 articles, first by New Scientist and then a BBC article.

+ also a article on the discovery of Kyrptonite in a mine in Serbia!:

For the first time, astronomers have spotted a cosy alien planet that might be hospitable to life.

The planet is not much bigger than the Earth, and it enjoys balmy temperatures of about 20

Wont comment on the whole shebang, but that Krpytonite thing has to be the most crappy, desperate news story Ive ever seen. Basically, all they found was a mineral which had partially the same chemicals as the fictional composition of Kryptonite detailed in the newest movie. Thats pretty tenuous if you ask me- its not like everyone has been going on saying kryptonite is made out of the following compounds since superman started, and then they found it- its like the directors of the newest movie made up a compound, then scientists found a mineral which isnt even chemically idential to that compound as it contains fluorine which kryptonite doesnt, and tried to turn it into a news story. Theyre not even allowed to call it Kryptonite because it has nothing to do with the element Krypton, its called Jadarite or something. Stupid BBC...

True, i posted it in a tongue in cheek manner.

It's unusual that the BBC of all would report on something in this sensationalist way, i suppose it was coined Kryptonite by it's founder knowing full well it would get masses publicity.

Now we just need them to find the same mineral with iron deposits within it, and then we will have Red Kryptonite Smilie

I believe I just read that story about the earth like planet 3 times. I just started at the top and read till the bottom. Why so much repeat? They could have made it about 30 sentences shorter.

I did state there was two articles at the top, but i have just defined the two, to make that clearer.

This of course relates to is there alien life? topic, so if anyone would like to pick at some of the religious arguments posed there, using such new information as this please do so.

Personally i am sick of the perspective that we and our planet are in some way "special" within the universe. LS

Ah, thanks. I thought I was reading one article.

20 light years away == 20 years travelling at the speed of light...we won't see anything soon I reckon.

Yes but unless we can reach the planet or reach it enough times with the technology to sucsesfully terraform it then it means nothing.

Enoch Powell was right, and you know it.

It's fairly interesting to hypothesise about what may be out there, but I'll need proof until I accept the presence of lifeforms on such a planet. And with the planet being twenty lightyears away, methinks that proof will be a long time in coming.

Screwing the rules since 1989.
