Oh poor you. We usually get proper music for our formal. If they wanted play old music, thats fine... as long as its good old music. Nutbush, oh god. I remember being forced to dance to that in primary school. As if anyone dances like that, so much for social dance education.
By the way, are you Australian? It is just that Americans call formals Proms.

Aye, so do the English.
yes, I'm Australian. oh btw its a satirical article from the chaser team in case noone picked that up. It just reminds me of last formal... god... guys sharing around alcohol in the toilets... terrible music, bad food, dancing. ugh!

I didn't look up the link, sorry, I will do that now. You live in NSW, Queensland or Victoria? Just curious.

Back in the day - we didn't have them. I have seen only one close up and many from a distance (friends). The one I did attend was excruciating. The absolute horror was that they had to do the chicken (birdy?) dance. That is not only the worst song ever, but the most embarrassing dance that anybody could do. The kids looked plain stupid.
As for the school formal, they have become a massive business - the clothes, make up, hairstyles and limousines. Girls spend over $1,000 on it. My daughter has already stated that she will be attending, if at all, (next year) as a goth, from her existing wardrobe of non-conventional clothing.
Formals were great, I went to all 3 of mine. The 2nd one it was fancy dress. Being arabic, my friends convinced to dress up as a terrorist... and so I did. I walked around a balaclava and a toy AK47. We pretended to do drivebys which was also pretty funny.

At a school reunion, I went as Hitler (1980) and I lived in a Jewish area (South Caulfield). I walked to the tram stop and used public transport in it. I didn't see a problem at the time, but a death threat on my door step caught me off guard.
I know this is a bit irrational, but I was kind of scared that maybe I would accidentally be shot by a policeman, thought to be a real terrorist. Wouldn't be the first time it would happen.
