I don't understan all this talk of it being a 'mess', I think people must just be crap at it or not have played it enough. Only a couple of reviews I've read have arknowledged that despite its complexity, you always know what to do and it all feels very instinctive by level 3.
If you're the sort of gamer that hates difficult games, you're a crap gamer. If you're a reviewer who down-grades a game because you couldn't crack it in an afternoon, you're a shit reviewer. Odama is about practise and developing skill, not flying through hoops in an un-failable training mission.
