I'm no tech head. Let's get that out of the way to start off with. Now. I'll get to the point. I know the Revolution is about game play, innovation, and fun. But I seriously think the graphical prowess of the machine is intensely underrated. It has a 6800ultra, whatever that is. I assume the graphics card. Now that means nothing to me but APPARENTLY it's not half bad.

The Revolution has been announced to be two to three times more powerful than the GameCube, yes? Now think about some of those beautiful Cube games. Resident Evil 4, Twilight, Mario DDR (the character models were pretty damn crisp), Metroid Prime etc. Two to three times better then that is enough. I remember reading an interview with Reggie, talking about the industry reaching a saturation point, graphics wise. If the Rev is able to give us Oblivion visuals, and things on par with the Unreal 3 engine, then the Revolution will hold it's own ground in the visual department.

Discuss.

Make no judgement until you see all contenders side by side. The GameCube was supposed to have "inferior graphics" too.

I read on revo europe (I think) that the dev kits were going out to developers and an unnamed developer said the graphics are much better than expected.

A 6800Ultra isn't going to make much of an impact against the competition. It's good now (though not top of the range) but games consoles generally go for technology that's ahead of the curve. Hence the 360's three processors.

Like the 360, I would expect Revos graphics chip to be custom designed and made solely for the jobs Revo needs.

Whereas Ps3 has a 7800(approx) but that is effectively a PC chip shifted over; which is not custom designed and though higher in power will be harder to program for.

though higher in power will be harder to program for.

That seems be a problem with Sony, the PS2 and PSP are supposedly murder to develop for.

Yeah, thats been the main problem of PS2 since the start.
I dont think PSP is meant to be as bad technically, but the problem of disc reading, loading times and battery drain make it harder.

Thats why Cube can do so much with limited chipsets, its so easy to get all the power from them.

It has a 6800ultra,

Dunno where you got that fromSmilie ATi are making their graphics card.

Nvidia's 7900GTX will be released soon, PC 'for the win'?

Not at the HUGE cost it would take to put a 7900GTX in your PC and have Ram/Processor capable of not bottlenecking the system.

Besides, Dual 7900GTX is where its at... Smilie

what happened to that broadway and that other new yorky sounding dual chip that were supposed to bein the revo (made by IBM or something)? I'm guessing that's old news..

Doesn't Mir make great sigs? I am the MOCRI (master of completely random insanity).

They were the codenames for the chips that will be in Revo.

I thought that might be the case - especially with ATi providing the 'cube's graphics, under the god-awful Flipper chipset name.

They were the codenames for the chips that will be in Revo.
Hollywood for the graphics and Broadway for the CPU, wasn't it?

You think correct.

And as I've said a fair few times, Metroid Prime x 3 = sex

...with 3 girls.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

Oooh.....nah I don't think it'll be that good. Though....what would I know? <_<;

There seem to be a lot of these sorts of threads around. Try to keep all the Revolution specification/graphical power talk to one thread if possible. Smilie

Basically, off the top of my head, we can expect some great looking Revo games. Perhaps not to the GENIUS MAJESTY of graphics on some PS3/360 games, but superb all the same.

The GameCube was supposed to have "inferior graphics" too.

Er, no it wasn't. Were'd you ever read an official press release or ANYTHING RELIABLE that says the GC was underpowered compared to the competition? The only thing that any developers were EVER publicly dissapointed with was the storage space on GC discs.

The GC is more-or-less level with the Xbox. The only thing that makes the Xbox graphically superior, is that it supports pixel shaders. Thus, games like DOOM 3, FarCry Instincs, and Half-Life 2 would be impossible on GC, without fucking ruining the games. Apart from that, the GC is graphically on a level playing field with Xbox, and head-and-shoulders over PS2.

I'm sure I heard that Doom 3 actually IS possible on GC. Unless I'm thinking of something else...the other two probably aren't, though.

I'm sure I heard that Doom 3 actually IS possible on GC.

Well, it's possible in the sense that the GC coud certainly have a version of DOOM 3. But it's a game that makes extensive use of shaders and stuff. Things that the GC cannot do. Therefore, the GC can't really do DOOm 3. Not the way it's supposed to be, anyway.

It's quite possible that I'm thinking of another game then. I'm sure there was a fairly recent Xbox FPS that somebody (the developer) said would actually work much better on the GC.

Black, maybe?

That might be the one. I do have a feeling it was Doom 3, but I can't find the quote to support it, so I'm probably wrong.

On a completely unrelated note.... I love the Black advert!

Yeah caught it today, quite good.

Black is on the PS2 aswell so it could be done easily on the GC.

It's a matter of standards.

Thousands of gamers still play Starcraft and Counter-Strike today. Do you really think it has anything to do with graphics?

That's not to say the Rev won't have good graphics. I'm still impressed with games like Sphinx & The Cursed Mummy or Metroid Prime.

I just hope now we can pull off things like having F-Zero GX multiplayer with 30 other cars, etc. It's not about looks, but about function.

To be open-minded, one must admit the possibility that anything and everything is wrong.
