Nintendo may manufacture over 20 million DS consoles this fiscal year, while in related news, Sony has cut PSP orders by a third.

Sony announced recently to its suppliers that 12 million units of the PSP are to be made this year, down 33.3 percent from the original projected total of 18 million units, which was a figure given to companies at the start of this year.

Nintendo on the other hand are said to be prepared to manufacture 20 million DS consoles - 8 million more units than the PSP this year.

Does this mean more good news for DS sales which, in Japan, are regularly beating the PSP? We'll have to wait and see.

This seems great news for NINTENDO and bad news for PSP, 6 million consols is alot and a big fat hole on Sony's pocket!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

Wheres the source?

anyway good news for ninty! Smilie

According to Sony, they never said they would produce 18 million PSP units this year, here's the source:

Generally showing the attitudes of gamers at the moment I guess. Obviously this reflects the demand for the devices and shows Nintendo are holding up pretty well after all.

Still a very impressive number from the Nintendo corner, though.

i really dont think there is a consumer demand for 20 million DS units. They would at least have to put their prices down then.

-What?

I'll refrain from commenting on the PSP, who cares really, all I care about is the DS and it's continued success and great games. (though a "victory" is nice all the same)

Anyway this is simply awesome news. Generally speaking Nintendo would have been happy selling around 20 Million full stop, this was clear in Iwata's comments of this (DS) not being as big as Game Boy due to the innovation/potential lack of mainstream appeal and that drastically smaller sales would still be a success due to the system again not being "mainstream".

And take into consideration Nintendo's smart operating practices, they would simply not manufacture that volume if sales weren't coming.

Fantastic news for Nintendo and its fans Smilie

Good news for Nintendo, making lots of cash, but IMO the DS still doesn't have enough games to warrant a purchase. In 3-4 months maybe. But I don't want to buy a DS and a haldfull of games and have Nintendo announce a new GB soon afterwards...
