Doom is one of the best video games ever made… but it's also one of the easiest to mod, even with the simplest of tools available; so easy that even the sequel, Doom II: Hell on Earth, as well as Final Doom, were nothing more than mods, with the first adding new enemies, items, textures, and tunes, while the latter was a pack of 64 levels. The same goes for The Ultimate Doom, which is nothing more than Doom-plus-one-more-episode. The only difference? Its name is Thy Flesh Consumed, and it's veterans only material.
The Ultimate Doom doesn't add a single thing besides a sky "texture," since the action now takes place on Earth - although it's hard to imagine Earth with an orange, cloudy sky, and with hellish mansions full of marble and wood, instead of cities made out of steel and concrete. The only real addition here is the fourth chapter, which uses the same gameplay mechanics all over again; enemies, weapons, and fast-paced shooting included.
Bear in mind, however, that this fourth journey towards hell's cyber-demonic legion is hard. Very hard. In the case of the Ultra Violence mode, painfully hard. Take the first level, for instance, which has often been cited as one of the toughest in the franchise! And how could it not be? There's little room to move, enemies are placed in tricky spots, or even appear out of nowhere, ammo is scarce, health items even more so, and the player character is left to fight the mighty Barons of Hell with little more than his fists.
Let it be said once more: The Ultimate Doom is much more difficult than all previous episodes combined. Every single level requires more than just aiming and pulling the trigger. This time, ammunition must be conserved, enemies must frequently be manipulated into killing each other, and the player must many times swim into hazardous liquids - and survive - before reaching the end. The good news? It's great fun, and thus, it's totally worth going through the ordeal at least once.
There are only two flaws here. The minor one is that, because of the high difficulty of the added fourth episode, this is not for casual "Doomers" who just want to fill a couple of demons with holes. The "major" one? Besides this, otherwise great, chapter, there's nothing new here. Having said that, though, this is, without a single doubt, the "Ultimate" Doom, since it's the definitive edition of the golden classic.
