Football = Smilie

Football video games can be boring (and watching this vid proves that), but playing football with mates on a field can't get any more fun.

Unless you tear your eyes out from the horrific-ness of playing a totaly overrated game.

Fifa 08 Wii looks like a welcome departure from the previous games, for one that perspective is default and cannot be changed but on the plus hopefully the controls are really fun as a consequence.

ProEvo7/FIFA 08?, I am looking foward to seeing which game will be worth buying, and how well the "fine" game of football plays on Wii in both games, I reckon it's going to be pretty good with both games myself. Some of the inclusions in the controls sound excellent. {LS]

Lol, that's the shittest game of footy ever. The defender just lets him have the ball, so he can score Smilie

You what, mate? FIFA is pants. It's all about Pro Evo. Pro Evo 4 is better than this one!

In Fifa's defense, they clearly set that steal up just to show people what the goal animation looked like - it's a problem with the players not the game. I don't have a clue which of Fifa and Pro Evo is the better series, but having played plenty of Fifa '98 and '02, I can confirm that Fifa isn't /that/ bad Smilie Goals are hard earnt by defensive pressure, passes, runs, crosses... just like the real thing Smilie

I prefer Pro Evo myself and may well get it on the 360, but according to what ive read about both so far FIFA 08 will come close to Evo this time around. Besides, these new controls for the Wii version is so radically new you cannot take the previous games into consideration too much, especially with FIFA 08s new vertical scrolling field. Games in the past that used this viewpoint were very fun indeed I think, like say Sensible Soccer, and a few others I could mention. If this is good also, which I suspect it will be, I may get it also because playability wise it has great potential with these new controls. I like the how you can perform shoulder barges like in Mario Strikers, and how lobs and chips and shots will be done with the Wii Remote. They seem to have really have thought about it in a manner a football fan who owns a Wii would. That's reasuring, in fact I have a feeling the Wii version of 08 FIFA will be the best out of all the formats [FIFA], and sell the most as a consequence. If not I will be happy with PE7. I am going to hold off until the last moment so I know which ones are worthy of spending money on, I might even get the DS version of PE7 if that's good. {LS]

I think PE7 is now coming to the Wii also, and it will have gesture based controls as well, these games will be distinctly different from the other versions.

This is probably an old build because both Henry and Ljunberg are playing for Arsenal in it still so perhaps it's early footage? When's the release date?

That's a point, end of autumn I think, well that's for the PS2 version so?. {LS]

Just get it on Wii or PS2 if you don't have a 360. Don't have to buy a 360 for it, mate.

Pfft. Lies. They say that every time. Just like every time Oasis do a new album, they always go "This one's as good as Definitely Maybe", and it always turns out to be patent bollocks.

Linkyshinks said:Besides, these new controls for the Wii version is so radically new you cannot take the previous games into consideration too much, especially with FIFA 08s new vertical scrolling field.

Bah, that means nothing. It still runs on the same disgusting FIFA game-engine. Just because it's swapped some button commands for Wiimote gestures, and forces you to play from one camera angle, doesn't really change a thing. FIFA is horridly rigid and robotic. Always has been. PES on the other hand is like greased-lightning (leave it...).

Linkyshinks said:

Totally different game (games? other than Sensible Soccer they were all crap), on totally different consoles, with totally different controls (to this), and from a totally different era. If you want Sensible Soccer, get the remake they done of it. It was pretty good. This is destined to be shit, because it used EA's rubbish footy engine.

So instead of pressing a button to do a shoulder-barge, you do a Wiimote gesture instead? *Wow* how revolutionary. I could use the buttons on my telly instead of my remote, but in the end I'm still just watching telly. It's no different. Probably less intuitive, as well.

Why would it matter to you how much it sells? Wiifolk seem to care lots about the sales of these consumer electronics.. Smilie

lol, no it'll be the same, just with gestures subbing in for regular buttons, producing the same on-screen result. I suppose they might implement a similar sort of camera limitation like EA have done with this. But then, Konami aren't shit like EA, so they'll probably be able to produce a non-crippled Wii version.

( Edited on 02.08.2007 14:53 by Oni )

It looks to me like poor man's sensible soccer, a 15 year old game. Is it just me or will the person playing from top to bottom be severely disadvantaged? I know that both people will be shooting that way for a half each but the camera angle is still shit. Enough of this gimmicky bollocks, I just want a decent football game. I really hope Pro Evo will do the trick (see what I did there, trick...) but yeah I've got my doubts. I'll still probably get it on the PS2 anyway...

How do you know that ?, I can faintly remember Jb posting something on it but cannot remember at all what it said.

Replacing buttons with such controls is essentially is what is happening here also, the throw ins [-Nunchuck and Remote gestured foward] and lobs for example [flicking the remote upward]. It's reason for concern for Wii owners that want a decent football game because it's not been done before, but I imagine they are not going to put these controls in just for the sake of doing so. In fact one thing I remember is that the developers said just that [EAs]. I have not got a clue abou PE, there are no shots and the details are vague, but this is the first promisng FIFA for a very long time. {LS]

Not really, and besides you change dont you

Mate, they are putting in these Wiimote gestures just for the sake of it. Of course EA are going to say otherwise. Do you really think EA are going to be truthful and say "Yeah, we've changed the button commands for these Wiimote controls, because you can't have a Wii game without Wiimote controls. You just can't take advantage of Wii gamers like that. You have to pander to this belief that Wiimote gestures are always the best way of going about things, otherwise they won't buy the game" ..?

Okay, let's think about this logically. Throw-ins. Instead of just pressing the A button, you wiggle the Wiimote. How is that in any way different? At all? It does the exact same thing. Except now it's less simple than pressing a button, you have to do stuff with the Wiimote, and hope the gyro inside your Wiimote doesn't mistake your gesture for a different gesture (which happens now and again).

The fact of the matter is, this is just a port of the PS2 version, with Wiimote gestures subbed-in to take the place of the controls. It's going to be less-intuitive, and doesn't have a prayer of stacking-up against PES7. It's FIFA, for a start. Let-alone a crippled FIFA. It's a butchered PS2 port, aimed solely at taking advantage of the Wii mentality. They could have made a perfectly good version using the classic controller.

But no, they simply had to use the Wiimote. And why do you think that is? Hmm? The reason they used the Wiimote, is because the only fashionable Wii games to have are ones with wacky Wiimote controls. If you really believe that EA (EA!) have used the Wiimote with this game to create a unique and revolutionary footy experience, then you're a fool.

It's the same reason why 99.99% (the 0.001% being Brawl, which ain't even out) of Wii games ignore normal controls, even though there's some perfectly good traditional control schemes available to Wii. They make more money this way, and in this case (and others), the game ends up worse than it would have been, had it just used proper controls.

We will have to see if they keep to their word, simply Smilie

On the throw in gestures, you use both Wii Remote and Nunchuk to gesture exactly as you would in the real game, as the clip shows. I dont know how you choose direction, but I imagine it will be the Nunchuk stick and the length of the throw would be determined by the speed at which you gesture the throw, I logically speculate.

This is NOT a port of the PS2 version, that was made clear from the start by EA, this is a ground up Wii title with controls I would like to think are well suited to both a football game and the the Wii. It will support a range of controller options also. Personally I see no problem with Nunchuk and Wii Remote controller configuration, in fact I rather like it, given the choice I would prefer it than classic controller easily, Mario Strikers controlled very well, I expect this will also until I see anything to think otherwise. {LS]

Look at the PS2 version of FIFA 08-

Then read about how different this version is to what we already know about this one-

The Wii version also, as is the trend, has a couple of minigames added in called collectively, wait for it, Footii Party...

That's always worthy of a star*

I think Ronaldinho's Mii looks better looking than the real thing. I wonder if our Mii's will be given legs also in the game, should do. As long as the whole Mii thing is seperate from the main game it's cool. I like this new feature EA are implimenting in their games, I cannot remember what it's called [?] but I like the fact that if your playing, anyone can just pick up a controller having never played the game before and still play. This new feature is being added to all EAs future sports games on Wii which is a great idea and should get more in the family picking up the Remote. {LS]
