Industry News | Non-Profit Gaming Company Unveiled

By Slydevil 01.03.2007 19

We all know that videogame corporations generate shedloads of dosh, and one new studio aims to cash in, but for a far more admirable cause.

OneBigGame is the worlds first non-profit videogames publisher, aiming to publish games which will hopefully not only provide us with entertainment, but raise funds for a variety of childrens charities, as well as raise awareness among youths.

It hopes to become a channel, through which game developers can use those profit margins to help those in need. Based in Marin County, California, OneBigGame is set to go public at the Games Developers Conference 2007 in San Francisco, seeking to extend its reach to the many attending game developers.

The company has already found some relative success, with the support from a number of development studios including Avalanche Studios, Kuju, Freestyle and Relentless.

Martin de Ronde, previously co-founder of Guerrilla Games and responsible for the OneBigGame initiative commented; "OneBigGame is basically a global platform that will allow game developers to use their creative resources to do something good for the world."

He continued, "So far, industry response has been tremendous. Over the past months, we have been conducting informal talks with a wide variety of games industry people, and we are confident the development community is ready for a large scale industry wide charity initiative."

A wonderful prospect, lets hope that more industry bigwigs take notice.

More games companies like this would make the planet a better place.

Unless they were liars of course. I hate it when "charities" lie. Smilie

I bet all of their games'll be really good as well, just to rub it into the face of Ubisoft's Wii teams.

OneBigGame: "Hah, we make good games, and not just for the money!"

Ubi : "Um...Far Cry roxxxxxx!"

With Charles Cecil of Broken Sword fame on-board the project, then my attention is certainly peaked! Cheers for the update Jamie Smilie

Broken Sword...hmmm...I heard that was coming to DS. I know there was a GBA version (which sadly bombed) but alas, maybe this dude will instantly notice the correlation between awesomeness on the PC and awesomeness on the Wii and get the idea of...making a super Wii game. With the studios already supporting them, I can't see them making many big budget games (i.e. PS3, 360 games) at the moment anyway.

Where did you hear about a DS version? And the GBA game sold through all of its stock, exceeding expectations from Revolution and THQ at the time...Sadly THQ messed around too much and BS2 GBA (despite being nearly completed) never got to retail Smilie

If it wasn't IGN it was CVG...and this was about 6 months ago. As for the bombing GBA version of Broken Sword, well, my Nintendo Official Magazine must be wrong then. Ah well Smilie

Is that surprising considering their past? Smilie

Anyway, good news, hopefully they give us something decent!

This is so awesome. See, the thing with this, is that it doesn't even matter if they make good games, that's how awesome it is. What makes it even more awesome, is that I bet they do make some pretty good games!

I would normally retract my comment, but it was Revolution itself that told me that little titbit of info Smilie

Yep. If this company is in the slightest bit honest, I'm already sure their games will be at least decent. I'm sure that since it's for a worthy cause, not just for the brainless consumers to get money from, they'll actually put effort into their games. All thbe things that Ubisoft don't.

So any idea if they'll be working on the Wii or DS? Have I missed something?

Sounds interesting lets hope they make a good anough game so people will actually but it!

I see all these people insulting the Nintendo corporation because of the lack of mature content. Yet there is something about Nintendo (at least their games) that strikes a certain unadulterated feeling of joy!!!  Pokemon Y - 1048-9263-5562

I think these'll be very, very small budget arcade games. My bet is they'll be sold through the likes of Live Arcade, Playstation Online, and Connect24. This way they maximise profits for charity by cutting out the packaging and distribution costs!

I hate to be pessimistic, but I bet any games that they do make will be absolutely shite... They'll probably be like crappy online Flash games. I'd absolutely love to be proven wrong though

Still a proud member of the 'omfg amazing water in games' society

Oh I like them!

What an awesome company! Let's hope they make some half-decent games. I'd love to support their work. Smilie
