Nintendo DS News | Dragon Quest Monsters Storms Japan

By Adam Riley 09.01.2007 17

Update - Some new data has been uncovered, highlighting the major players in last week's Japanese gaming chart. Please remember that these are Famitsu numbers, NOT Media Create, so there will definitely be some discrepancies between the numbers released by MC in a few days.

Hardware Sales

  • Nintendo DS Lite - 145,000
  • Wii - 120,000
  • PlayStation Portable - 70,000
  • PlayStation 3 - 60,000
  • Xbox 360 - 19,000
  • And according to Famitsu, by the end of 2006 total lifetime sales for each system looked like this:

  • Nintendo DS Lite - 13,950,000
  • PlayStation Portable - 4,510,000
  • Wii - 989,118
  • PlayStation 3 - 466,716
  • Xbox 360 - 290,467 (99,798 of which sold in December 2006 due to the release of Blue Dragon)
  • And the same statistical source states that Nintendo's Wii has actually cracked a million now, actually reaching 1,135,671, which is fantastic given that the GameCube is just over 4.1 million so far in that territory!

Those are some holy f*cking crap sales! Smilie I had a feeling DQM would be big, but nearly half a million in just one day is bloody amazing!

The question is now how high can it go? Will it crack two million and become the biggest DQM so far?

Half a million for a spin-off, my head spins thinking about how many copies Dragon Quest nine is going to sell. Smilie

    Smilie

But after this how many can square enix produce /week?

If its only like 20,000(ish) like FF3 was then they're gonna miss out on maybe a record for fastest selling DS game.

Looks like Sega's Love & Berry, FFIII and possibly even Tamagotchi 2 are strong contenders for reaching a million, along with this.

I think Square Enix will have learned its lesson from the FFIII 'disaster' (nearly a million is hardly a failure, but you guys know what I mean in terms of lost potential...).

Indeed, Square Enix missed the boat my underestimating the sales of Final Fantasy. I doubt they'll make that mistake again.

Another 1m seller comfirmed for the DS i am getting tired of saying that.

The DS should replace Shintoism as the Japanese religion it is just too popoular and Iwata for Emperor

I had ordered this for import but hasn't arrived yet... lol. I'll write a brief review when I get to play it.

But because of that they managed to make a Final Fantasy game that lingered in the charts!!!

About 6 copies, because DQ is shit.

About 300,000, but they won't, because DQ is shit.

    /opposite land

Powdered Water, yeah I'm waiting on my copy as well - can't wait Smilie Looking forward to hearing your take on it!

ZeroSimon, true - but games on the DS are not as front-loaded as those on the PS2 anyway, which even applies to the FF series I reckon. DQM will be a good indicator over the next few weeks as to how good S-E RPGs legs are...

You too? Thats cool! Not many around me are getting it, so I was thinking there'd be nobody to talk to.

I wonder how hard it is linguistically. I'm guessing the system side will be easy and story side hard, which would be the opposite of CoM (I so remember your review of that, but we won't go there Smilie ). Anyway I'd love to help if I'm able.

As for the question of "how good S-E RPG legs are", I wouldn't use monsters series as the ultimate parameter... it's overly biased in favour of robust system. Even the GBA version felt a little diluted on the story side as a payoff.

Got mine yesterday and it's great fun so far. I've never played a DQM game before, so wasn't sure what to expect, but the game plays a little like Pok

o it's released in america? or did u actually buy the jap game? do you understand the jap?

    ( Edited on 06.01.2007 14:02 by Elrinth )

I don't understand Japanese, no, but I got my import copy from Japan Smilie It's not confirmed for the US yet, but with 600,000 sales already it'd be strange if it didn't...especially considering how DQ is becoming more popular in the West now.

    You reek of political correctness

I'm liking the sarcasm...Don't think people realise 'Jap' is not a nice term for Japanese.

Anyway, great to see Animal Crossing getting another boost, thanks to the movie being released there. For reference, in its first three weeks on release in cinemas, it charted No.2, No.3 and then No.4. A gradual decline, but not a major drop, which has to be a good sign, surely?

Sorry to butt in with an off topic, but I think this may be worth pointing out. It's about how the term 'jap' is being used.

Originally it was in the USA that the term 'jap' became derogatory. Otherwise it's been nothing but a short hand for 'japan'. The Japanese themselves have used the term 'jap' for many years for abbreviation. Wimbledon (british tennis) changed the abbreviation from JAP to JPN in mid 90s following the change the international Olympics association brought about. FIFA (world cup) still kept JAP abbreviation till recently. Not sure if they have changed this yet, probably not.

My point is, JAP is nothing more than BRIT or YANK for british and american. It's only in the US that Jap was used as a derogatory term and to a minor extent by the british media during the 2nd world war, but only because of the americans. But you know how it is - the US influence on the world is so huge, the chances are that the world will soon acknowledge 'jap' to be a derogatory term. For better or worse. Maybe some day the term 'brit' will become derogatory too...
