Rare's GoldenEye 007 for the Nintendo 64 was, and still is in many circles, THE first-person shooter to own, with nothing else comparing. But could Nintendo be trying to get it back on Virtual Console?
When asked about the possibility of the game appearing on the Wii's Virtual Console, Reggie Fils-Aime went on record with MTV.com to state there are "a lot of issues there. suffice to say we would love to see it, so we're exploring all the rights issues."
What he means by this is that the developer of the game on the Nintendo 64 was UK outfit Rare (formerly Rareware) and the Bond license has only recently been transferred over to Activision (no longer EA for those that missed that news!). Thankfully, in Nintendo's favour, Activision is close in that it has now provided Tony Hawk launch games for the GBA, DS and Wii, as well as supporting the GameCube to the very end. Plus, Microsoft has allowed Rare to remain friendly with the Kyoto company by letting development on the GBA and DS go ahead. Whether that last point would mean anything, though, is another matter...unless Nintendo and Microsoft came to an agreement where the game appeared both on XBLA and Virtual Console at the same time.
