Industry News | Free Radical Does Star Wars Battlefront

By Jorge Ba-oh 01.10.2006 14

Quick News: Free Radical is set to develop the sequel to the successful Star Wars: Battlefront franchise according CVG. However the company have neither confirmed nor denied any involvement, but whatever title it is, it "will be awesome." Hopefully with this announcement there will be some Battlefront action on the Wii.

Stay tuned for updates.

You've got to hope Wii gets some Free Radical support...

Who developed the first two? In any case they were pretty awesome, and with Free Radical developing it can only get better Smilie Man I hope we get it on the Wii ;_;

It was Pandemic Studios...The only worry is that Free Radical doesn't think the Wii is powerful enough for their new game Haze, so may overlook it again (although it'd be LucasArts' choice, actually).

well everyone knows Lucas Arts wouldnt miss out on the finacial opportunities of making a light sabre swinging Star Wars game at some point.

Free Radical...they seemed to like the GameCube, but not the Wii.

Damn it, I wanted them to create a new FPS! Dang it!

Im not bothered about Star Wras. All I want is Timesplitters on the Wii. It will be the ultimate FPS.

I don't reckon it'll come to Wii. Not being funny, but seriously, I don't think it will. Smilie

It's almost as annoying as people asking for another Sands of Time...

Guys, Free Radical has expressed major interest in developing for Wii. They've always had a very good relationship with Nintendo in the first place. They were former Rareware employees, afterall. Haze is a very graphic intensive game. That being the case, they decided it would be prudent to not port the game to Wii.

In regards to BF3, Wii would be absolutely perfect for this type of game and LA would be extremely stupid not to bring it to it. If they do, hopefully Free Radical will maximize all of Wii's capabilities. BF1 & BF2 were pretty good games and they were lots of fun, but neither of them was anything like I was expecting nor what Pandemic & LucasArts promised us. Lots of features and content were cut from the final version of BF1 and then they did it again with BF2. What kills me is that for the sequel they axed a few features from the first game that people loved (myself included)like the ability to go in prone and cockpit views for a couple expamples. They had made some great improvements in a few areas and then greatly skimped on a lot of others. It was like taking three steps forward and five steps back. Lots of vehicles gamers were clamoring for were cut or never planned for implementation at all. I was also extremely surprised by the sheer amount of incredibly stupid inaccuracies to Star Wars lore like the wrong engine & weapon sfx, wrong laser bolt colors, and wrong weapon and trooper skins in both versions. God forbid they get the technical specs for the craft and weaponry at least somewhat accurate(Oh man, I wish I knew how to mod). I realize that for a game like this there has to be sacrifices in the accuracy department to improve gameplay, but Pandemic went wwwaaaaaayyyy overboard. They didn't even give some of the characters and vehicles the right combat designation. The Alpha-3 "Nimbus" V-wing starfighter (actually an interceptor) immediately comes to mind. AAAHHHHH!!! Must... stop...ranting... *takes deep breath* Okay, I think I'm done. Smilie

I really hope Free Redical does Battlefront 3 right... for Wii!!

Well, I guess it's obvious now that I'm a Star Wars nut. Smilie

Chance favors the prepared mind.

But that's a different game...it might have needed that power for that specific game and not this one.

There's always gonna be the danger of developers saying the Wii isn't good enough, and making a cheap gimmicky alternative for a quick buck... Hopefully that won't happen with Battlefront ;_;
