Industry News | Microsoft Backs Nintendo Wii to be No.2

By Adam Riley 21.09.2006 23

In the latest bout of Nintendo back-slapping for the competition, Microsoft has once again gone on record to praise the company and its Wii.

In an exclusive interview with CNET, Peter Moore, the VP of Microsoft, believes that whilst Nintendo and its Wii will not be able to oust the XBOX 360 from its lofty No.1 next generation position (by default), it will out-pace the PlayStation 3 with ease. Here is what the big man himself said:

"In a lot of instances, it will be a No. 2 box because it's priced accordingly. The fear I would have is that people will buy the box and only play a few games. I think you'll pull it out at parties. It's fun for a few minutes, but I'm not sure [how long that will last]."

Unfortunately, for Mr Moore, Reggie Fils-Aime disagrees and believes that gamers will snap up the Wii and, rather than choosing another next gen system, will instead opt for a Nintendo DS!

Stick around for further updates...

Yeah, Peter Moore slimes every Nintendoian and wants to take Ninty's Good-company-image over to Microsoft.
I loathe that!
Microsoft has done so many dirty tricks to kick companies out of the ring: Digital Research with their DOS/Windows-shit, Apple, Geoworks, Sony/Nintendo...
Watch out how the tone changes when Nintendo rocks the market with Wii. Then they will ram their Money-filled-coc... I mean, than they will take the nearest golden-plated 360 power supply and beat Iwata and Myamoto to shit, throw a billion bucks over their mangled bodies and burn everything.

But behold:
Iwata: "If you strike me down, Moore, I will become more powerful than you can ever imagine!"
Moore *breathes* "Ahahahahaha, no, Iwata. I AM your father... I mean '...your downfall'!" *brtz*
Iwata: "Noooo, look!"
Moore *turnes around* "You?"
Link: "Look, Wii-spinning-attack!" *hack'n'slay*
Iwata *watches* "He talks...?!"
"Myamoto *behind link* "Yup, surprise! *grins*

O how I hate Microsoft...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Pft, it doesn't hurt them to say that. It only ensures that ninty fanboys will go for 360 for 2nd console rather than ps3. It doesn't cost them a dime, doesn't do much either way. Plus they don't really see ninty as the competetion, it is the ps3 they are after really.

I never thought Microsoft would be a lesser evil, but they have done a lot of good work for the games market.
In fact, they have done more good things for the games market then they have done fo the pc market. (I think Windows95 was the last OS they made that had major interfaces development and improvement).

When microsoft entered, I feared a monopoly. I still do.
If microsoft ever gets a firm grip on number 1, we are in trouble.
But, frankly, if Sony gets a strong grip with the PS3 we are in bigger trouble.

Sonys buying out companys a lot these days, and I dont like the idea of a single company in charge of a whole media format. Sony can already, when they want, stop James Bond games being released on other consoles. (EA has got one more in their contract I think, but after that)

I dont think they will stop there.
Sony scares me a bit frankly.

This kind of cooperative behavior is refreshing, and is part of the reason I bought a 360 in addition to the two Nintendo Wii's I intend to buy. (One white and one red, eventually.)

Personally I think a 360 and a Wii are necessary to have the full next gen experience, though if you can only afford one, I recommend Wii (as someone who already has a 360.)

Wii is the must have console by far.

Absolutely nothing at all contiuning the Microsoft hate campaign annoys me the way they think the 360 is gonna stamp all over the competition

Yeah Microsoft should say their console is really really bad and consumers shouldn't by it cause it's all green like snotters, ewww!
Don't by our machine go by nintendo's yeah we don't want to sell any computer entertainment machines, were filthy stinking rich any way so it dosn't matter.

And also being completely untrue? Mr.Ashcroft, if you
re going to diss Microsoft, do it factually. Many Xbox games are completely capable of playing in HD, along with the Xbox. What's your point?

You know he's trying to be nice to us so we'll buy a 360 instead of a PS3...So sneaky

And the backstabbing keeps on coming!

very few are fooled by micro$haft these days. even PC users are getting sick of the cr*p m$ are dishing out. only x360 user i know traded it in. for shop credit.

Once upon a time, Microsoft and Bill Gates were hated by the general public. Once upon a time, Microsoft and Bill Gates were the enemy of the world, with their aggressive, almost inhumane efficiency in Capitalism and Monopoly.

Then Bill Gates realised that to conquer the world of Operating Systems, he needs to get the console scene. So, Xbox was born. Overnight, he turned from the ultimate villain to the "best friend" for gamers. I'm sorry lads, but that stinks like a zombie.

Bill Gates intelligence once again succeeded in enveloping people and brain washing them into lemmings Bill Gates had always envisioned.

If any of you here think Microsoft's "friendliness" towards Nintendo is anything other than a cynical marketting strategy, you are insulting the intelligence of Microsoft. I have a good reason to believe that, to this day, Xbox remains to be one of the most effective brain washing machines ever invented in the recorded history of humankind. So much so that its shockwaves can be felt today in a non-Microsoft forum such as this.

What that proves: Bill Gates' hand of darkness is extending ever so further away from its territory than it's ever managed. I feel him pulling the strings even in this forum, controlling you yet you don't even realise. I fear that one by one, us Nintendo supporters will turn into another mindless Xbox f4Nb0y who do all the hardwork for the man whose heart is not in the right place to deserve winning this competition. I wake up every morning, wondering how many more zombies I will see outside the window.

EDIT:
Just so that it's clearer, I actually think 360 is well made. I'm not saying it isn't by my above statements.

( Edited on 23.09.2006 03:48 by Powdered Water )

Yes, that's the point. Powdered Water gets it absolutely right. I know Microsoft too well to take their friendly tone as something other than Borgia-like friendlyness with a poisoned dagger behind the back. They absolutely don't appreciaty innovation. They either buy the company (i.e. Rare), add their product to their portfolio, make it... 'better' (watch the youtube-video where Microsoft adds their trademarks to the iPod-packaging. It's a fake but it has more truth to it than you may think) or dry the comany (again: Rare), or give it crap to design (the good Viva Pinata turns into shit when it comes out. it's gonna be promising like Starfox Adventures, but publishing decisions from Microsoft turns it into crap, where Nintendo would have requested innovative adds). Then they take over the market, stay on their throne of fattiness, don't let anyone near them with better products (they shot him with their monopoly guns, again an example: Digital Research with their far better DR-DOS back in the early 90s).

The UK itself is a strong Xbox-market, and that's not bad itself, but they are by far no good guys and their strategy is far more dangerous than Sony's. They had a big chunk of money but they did not force you to take in their programs, OSes, and did not create a dependency you almost can't escape. One indication may be the connection of Vista with their Windows-CS-handheld market and XBox360.

So I mean what I say and I saw it more than one time in the past. It may not be evident right now, but it may be more in the future. They only don't have the chunk of the market they need to make us pay for it.

That's why I scrap my money for a ps3 than buy an Xbox360! But why? I stood by my Gamecubes side as the only one console I owned and I picked the best games out of it, even if the ps2 had a lot more games I would have liked to play...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Even though it would be nice to see the Wii get 1st I doubt it will. My predition is:

1) Playstation 3
2) Wii
3) XBOX 360

I think people will just by the Playstation simply because it's the Playstation.

I think that Wii will get a boost, then it's up to Nintendo to keep the hype up with good software - and that includes coregames as well as the new market 'touch generations'. Then the Wii can be number 2 easily. Maybe even crasp number 1... But for now Wii has to overtake second place first...

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

People who hate the 360 have not used one.

And I can't believe so many of you fall for this PR bullshit.

I won't buy one. *wink*

Hey, Nintendo is doint some PR now too. At last they have learnt a bit, that they need games and good PR. Fil-aimee is the one behind it I think. I like Iwata for that he allows Fils-Aimee to PR Wii like that. Sure, it's not only F-A, but he is doing it 'in the west'. Maybe that's a good idea and that can widen the acceptance of Wii. Because that's what did Sony with PS1 and PS2 too. But I hope Nintendo stays the 'nice company', they are now. They seems to be gentleman-like to others. I like that in a company. But surely they have to be aggressive in some ascpects too. See 'no Online-support for 3rd parties before 2007' - I'm not fond of this decision either, but I hope they are doing some good with it.
Hey, I'm naive, don't destroy my hopes! *g*
