Nintendo News | Nintendo Wi-Fi hits 2 Million

By Jorge Ba-oh 29.08.2006 21

Nintendo announced earlier today that their DS online service has hit 2 million unique users and 70 million individual game sessions in just over nine months.

"Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection continues to set the standard for easy, fun and safe wireless gaming. Our hand-held leadership will continue unabated with today's launch of Star Fox Command and the anticipation of our upcoming Wi-Fi titles."
George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications.

The number of users is expected to go one step further with a selection of Wi-Fi ready online titles shipping in the remainder of 2006 and beyond.

Stick with C3 for future updates.

Mike Gee of iZINE said, "...The Verve, as he [Richard Ashcroft] promised, had become the greatest band in the world. Most of the critics agreed with him. Most paid due homage. The Verve were no longer the question mark or the clich. They were the statement and the definition."

Yup, its done amazingly well
Free+Easy is a winning solution.

Still got some nice online stuff comeing from Squaresoft too.

It took Xbox Live until the 21st of July 2005 to reach to 2million users this makes it seem terrible in comparison to Nintendo WiFi

Xbox Live 2million users http://uk.xbox.ign.com/articles/635/635570p1.html, so it took MS 2.7years to achieve what Nintendo did in 9months, although it is hard to compare an free online service with a subscription service.

Does anyone wonder why Nintendo arlways refer to these users as unique.

Cant be arsed to take my DS online, I'll wait till the Wii comes out, and I'll probably say exactly the same.

FF3 basically has an email function. I don't seem many using that much Smilie unless the extra ut unlocks are good enough..
Anyway, tis all good for Nintendo but i hope it dosn't go to there heads and play it safe by keepig it exactly the same for the wii.

Need for speed useing the Wifi connection :O

I was actualy talking of FF:CC, not FF3.

FF3 is the (current) big DS sales boast.
I suspect FF:CC will be a big online-specific boast though.

Im pretty sure Squaresoft...(they will never be Enix..just dosnt roll of the toung)...also have another online game comeing for the DS.
Cant remember what though.
Maybe a mana game.

*drools* NFS racing on DS/Wii... I can not wait

Unique meaning 2 million different people.

Not including me. I would but I just cant get round to getting a Router. Compitition hint hint.

yes, we have to be that fair. It's not cheap, man, but offers some goodies mostly worth the price. Some do not want to pay, thou. With DS they can go online when they are in the mood without thinking any further.

Yeah, man, I hope FF:CC 2 brings decent online-gaming. It was very funny to play the first one with 4 players. we had the hardware - fortunately - but it did cost almost 650 EUR to play multiplayer (4 x GBA-SP

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

That number is almost gauranteed to double or even triple once the Wii is launched and in full swing.
Super Smash Bros Brawl is one of Nintendo's huge guns for 2007. And as Nintendo are planning to throw their full weight behind online and wiiconnect 24, if Nintendo are keeping their promise involving all things Wii,expect to be blown away in terms of these feaures being added and how they're implemented. And what if they decide that Metroid should miss the launch window as they orignally did for the DS? Mmmmmm. Delays with Nintendo have often ment better things.
Imagine being sent Feirce Deity Link as a playble Smash Bros Character via Wiiconnect 24
Or trading Smash Bros characters via wfi connectivity b/w the Wii and (quite possibly)the DS versions of the game.
The possibilties are endless.
What more important for us at the moment is TGS because Nintendo are going to outline their full plans for Wii connect 24 and Nintendo Wifi.
Remember, true belivers DS and and friends codes was just the beginning. Wii is Nintendo's Revolution and Solution to how games should be approached and played in the Next Gen Era as well as a return of Nintendo's dominant stance in the home console market.....!

Now if they could just make the service worth using...

Definately. I want to see a service that's not as restricting as the DS' WFC. Still, a decent result for just 6/7 Wi-Fi games so far.

Now if they could just make the service worth using...

I thought it was worth using, or I wouldn't be using it...

360 Gamertag: shiptoncraig
PSN: shiptoncraig
Steam: Guess what?

Well I'd use it if it didn't take 20 minutes to connect, 30 minutes to find anyone to play against, and if the penalty for disconnecting in the middle of a game was DEATH by two large men in black suits... With baseball bats...

20mins? Mario kart can be lng at times but Metroid and Animal crossing are pretty quick.

It never takes 30minutes to find someone in any of the online games Tetris from what i hear can bit if a wait at times but MKDS, MPH and ACWW there is no waiting hardly ever involved.

That is very impressive indeed!!! 2 million in nine months!!! That should be a queue for Microsoft to freaking make their online service free as well or at least make it cheaper or something...

Its not that impressive. The 360 has 60% of users having used live. (The original xbox attach rate was around 10%).
