Nintendo Wii Tidbits | Star Wars, Dragon Quest, Paper Mario, Prime 3 and more...

By Jorge Ba-oh 13.08.2006 28

With the launch of Nintendo's fifth home console approaching, tiny morsels of information have hit the Internet, and IGN have collected various chunks of juicy Wii news.

In a recent Podcast broadcast on IGN, the following was revealed:

  • Super Paper Mario, in development for GameCube, could be shifted to the Wii instead, according to IGN editor Matt Casamassina, with the title existing so late in the GameCube's lifespan.
  • Metroid Prime 3 is said to have a strong chance of not making the Wii launch as previously promised, due to possible time constraints or marketing decision.
  • Dragon Quest for Wii is said to not be ready in tiem for the Wii's launch.
  • Excite Truck has been confirmed as launch title.
  • During LGC, Nintendo and 3rd parties will reveal how games that exist or are in development for the 360/PS3 have been ported to work with the Wii-specific control scheme.
  • LucasArts have, according to IGN, been developing a lightsabre game for the Wii.
  • Publisher THQ have 6 to 8 titles in development.

With several of these points, Nintendo have yet to provide official confirmation, with things certainly changing in the road to the Wii launch later this year.

    Stay tuned for future updates.

Good news and bad news - great to see SPM in development for Wii, IMO, it wouldn't do as well on the GC as it could potentially do on the Wii - something good can be done with the franchise using what they've done already. Good to know there's a potential lightsabre game in dev too, it had to be coming.

Shame about Dragon Quest, though it could be good to get a decent RPG that'll sell well, instead of a quick rush-up job. Shame about MP3 potentially not making launch, though again for the same reasons could get us some better quality titles in exchange for a little wait.

I would be disspointed if MP3 missed launch date but not devasted as there is LOZ and Red Steel, although it would be amazing if they are doing a Hunters job by making it online mode as Hazuki San said there isn't a real quality online game for the Wii so far.

Yeah looks like Paper Mario will be that title which they are referring to although i would have hoped it appeared on the CUBE and probably that Kirby title we saw ages ago for the CUBE there is also a rumour that naruto 2,3 and 4 (i think) that have been released in Japan (apparantely well acoording to GAmeCentral they are the best narotu games) will be released on the Wii with Wii specific controls after the success of the first game in America.

Shame for Dragon Quest it could have been it's big break in the west if it made it for the Wii's launch

I'm glad Super Paper Mario is moving, as it will get more (deserved) attention. I wonder what will happen to DK Bongo Blast then?

As for Dragon Quest; it would have made a great launch title, but waiting until the userbase expands slightly may be better for the franchise.

LucasArts and Day One Studios have both been positive about Wii lately and are working together on a project...could this be it?

THQ will hopefully have more than a bunch of licenses, such as Cars Smilie Fingers crossed for a wrestling title!

yeah i am hoping for a WWE title preferably online for the Wii, maybe Bongo Blast is being moved to the Wii in the form of DK Racing, in the podcast it also revealed that THQ are having a Wii only event in NYC and maybe Strikers could be another laucnh window game

I think Super Paper Mario will do extremely well on the GameCube. The Wii is also backwards compatible to the Gamecube therefore it gamers want to buy the game for the Wii they can.

Nintendo should not abandon the cube like they did with the N64. I think they should support the Gamecube for one more year. This will ensure that the stock that's sitting on retail shelves is sold. Furthermore, Nintendo stated that they wanted to support the GameCube during the first year of the Wii.

I'm not worried about the games that are going to miss the launch of the Wii. Thirty games was a little much. However these games will still probably make the launch window.

Cool great news! as long as Zelda, RRed Steel and Excite Truck make the launch then im not botherd.

I think these news are all good news.
SPM *will* do good on GCN, but no one will buy it, since it 'comes on an oooold console' (shame, but that's the consumer of today. Thanks, Sony and MS!).
MP3 will come later - that's hard for me MP-maniac, but on marketing point-of-view it is a right thing to do imho.
Then Dragon Quest: I am not surprised! I never saw anything of this game beside the short trailer on E

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

I think it could be better if they build the ports from the ground up for the Wii but they may have found a way to do it so i'm really curious to see, I think the Wii will have the most games if it devs can port games from both the current-gen and next-gen.

C'mon THQ, gimme a great WWE Day of Reckoning 3 for Wii!!

Gives DOR3 with better type matches like Elimation Chamber, last man standing etc and make sure the Hitman is there

Super Paper Mario would be a nicer Wii title, wouldn't be ignored due to being last gen title by retail or consumers.
    Shame about prime if true.

I am fine with MP3 not making the launch, we already have heaps including a FPS already. Good news about new third-party content, will be interesting to see some new footage.

Definitely, can't wait to see the near-release footage of the Wii, and how to play games that haven't been shown to the public.. yet.

I'd rather have a few games at launch I can take my time with and enjoy and fill the gap untill MP3 comes around, by which time I know I'll be in for a bloody good game.

But what if you only wanted metroid prime 3? Smilie

Me too. Although, if Prime had made it to launch then that would also be on my to-buy list. 3 out of 4 is still fine though.

To be honest I think it's all 100% good news. As for the delays I'd much rather they finish them properly than release a half-arsed attempt a few months early. There's already more than enough launch games to make up for it.

Delay it to Christmas and make an online and multiplayer mode and all is forgiven, you hearing this Retro

They're doing a MP Hunters and delaying it after clearly stating that there would be no online mode.

Typical, I can see through their little techniques nowSmilie.

Mwahaha! I said Super Paper Mario would make a better Wii title so it could get the exposure that it deserves rather than being on a mangled, dying console, and it looks like they might've had the same brain wave themselves. Just strengthens the launch window of Wii.

I'll be very disappointed if Metroid Prime 3 doesn't make launch, but I expect it soon afterwards, so I think I'll manage, especially with all the other stuff appearing at launch. Similarly with Dragon Quest Swords. On the other hand, the addition of Excite Truck to the launch is good.

I wonder what games we could see appearing on Wii rather than 360/PS3. Could be a very interesting Game Convention if this is true; I suppose this is Nintendo's way of saying 'Wii Prove Our Promise'?

The Lucasarts news isn't a surprise (frankly, they're stupid for not doing it immediately), and neither is the THQ news. I didn't think they'd just have a couple of titles and would have a load going, I just share sentiments that I hope one of them is WWE Day Of Reckoning 3. Could be an interesting game using motion sensing and buttons in conjunction...

    Pfff... I don't care about Super Paper Mario being moved to the Wii, WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING TO KIRBY!?!?! ;_;

well its not unexpected. nintendo dont want to slow sales of zelda or stop third party sales especially ubisoft. a delay for metroid gives me something to look forward to and i hope they add some online play. i think it is likely as nintendo have to prove their system as online entertainment.
DQ is understandable too as we've seen all of three seconds of it and i would expect ffcc to go the same way.
paper mario would stand a better chance on the wii and sales would be better and it would be a nice addition to the wii line up.
lucas arts know its what we want so they are bound to make it. it will sell and will sell wii's too.
i'm not too fussed on thq they seem to think that wii is kiddy and so until they do something good i dont care.
