Nintendo Wii Media | New Smash Bros. Brawl Screens and Tidbits

By Jorge Ba-oh 25.05.2006 99

With the next edition of Smash Bros. being one of the most anticipated games for the Wii, Nintendo have released yet more information on the upcoming title, including a rough translation of developer Masahiro Sakurai's blog.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the latest installment of the successful Nintendo-fighter franchise that sees new faces, ideas and a refinement of the existing series in a neat little package for 2007. The game promises to retain the action, skill and fun from the past versions, taking it one step further. Producer Masahiro Sakurai is keeping a blog updated for the upcoming title, and although not official translated yet, has some key tidbits of information from rough versions on the net.

  • Some characters from the GameCube version, Melee, won't be making a return in Brawl. No indication has been made of who will be making the cut, though the basic franchise leaders can be expected with clone characters more than likely making their exit.

  • The speed of the game will be adjusted, though the extent of this is not currently known - could be faster, could be slower. It is rumoured though to slow down.

  • More stages will take place in the air, with expanded combat taking place on different platforms.

Thanks to QJ for the translation.

Seven new screens can be found in the Smash Bros. Brawl album below.

Don't they have their own little symbols in the current games anyway?

This isnt a pure character addition. Rather, under certain conditions, Samus will remove her Power Suit.

That sounds crap. She should just be another character

By not having her as a separate character, though, new and worthy characters can enter the fray in addition to her.

It will be just like Zelda transforming into shiek except i'm guessing it will be permenant, unless an item will give you the suit back again maby.

Well the bit I didn't like was 'under certain conditions'... That makes it sound like it's something that's completely unstoppable or random... I don't want to be fighting as Samus and suddenly find that I'm without my suit. They should just make her an extra character. Making her separate isn't going to stop them from adding anyone else...

And in SSBM they had a symbol for the series they're from rather than their own symbol. Meta-Knight's is the same as Kirby's and all the Mario characters have a Maushroom

The conditions will probably be certain stages or if your energy goes above a certain %. The only way I can think of it working.

I'm one of the people that hopes they keep Young Link. His added speed over Adult Link makes him my favorite character in the game. Someone mentioned cell-shaded Link. I'd like to see him in the game also, but not at the expense of Young Link from SSBM.

I really hope we get to see at least Sonic in this game (Sonic, Knuckles and Tails would be nice, though none of the other stupid Sonic characters that the Sonic team keeps trying to jam down our throats). If they're going to include Solid Snake of all people, give the fans what they've been asking for since the original SSB. With Sega going 100% third party, I think this can happen.

    Got this from wikipedia:

The only confirmed characters can be seen in the E3 trailer on the official Web page's movie section, and they have been confirmed by Nintendo. Though Nintendo has confirmed with 100% that the first 12 characters from the original Super Smash Bros. will be in this game

    Wooo!!

Luigi's my fave character so this is good news to many. Smilie

I swear to god, they cut Marth, and I will buy a ticket to Japan and shove my fist down the throat of every Nintendo employee in the country.

Much like they did with SSBM, I hope they include some old stages too. I'd love to see Hyrule Temple make a return and why not include ALL the N64 stages just for the hell of it. I always wondered why they only included 3 N64 stages in SSBM

ME too actually... I hate Link, and while I don't really like Young Link either he's WAY better than Link...

I like young-link better than adult link, much more agile and a lot easier to wave dash with. I had always wished there was a transform ability with link to transform to young-link like zelda and sheik do.

Speaking about immersive levels, I hope the designers create object driven stages, just like in CS. You can either KO the opponent or satisfy a condition.

That's friggin' brilliant. I hope they do that. Imagine seeing Link pull out the Ocarina in battle to transform? It'd be great. The only downside is that they'd have to sacrifice one of his moves in order to pull this off.

This game looks Amazing! graphics, characters, enviroments, and more all look good. tho i think that even tho we do have the wiimote i think that maybe the game should be played with the retro controller because it will probably be easier to play with it then the wiimoteSmilieSmilie

Oh! How about megaman in it?

Already said it >_> And Zero too! I already have all their moves planned out... They better put them in!!!!! *shakes fist*

The site's been updated with Snake's profile.

    Snake? Snake! SNAAAAAAAKE!

The unexpected participant from Metal Gear Solid!
When this was first announced to the media, it was greeted with shouts of joy that resembled screams.

After much consideration, we decided to have Snake refrain from using real-world guns

    Looks good!

I suppose if he had a stealth kill it'd be quite cool, but absolutely useless... You can't really sneak up on someone in Smash Bros unless you're invisible and the other person is a bit blind...

On a side note: AAAAAAAAAGH!!! EVERYTHING'S ALL BLUE!!! *explodes*

You know what would be funny? You know how every character in SSB has an animation when they enter the arena. Well, it would be hilarious if you see Snake come out of a box or something, look around only to realize he's in this crazy place. Then they'd have that exclamation point come over his head with that classic "alert" sound effect from MGS. LOL

Posted this in the random video thread, but in case you didn't see:

Smash Brothers Brawl - WWE style.

It looks like snake had been sneaking behind link to try pinch his arse...I'm sorry for being so sad.

It is going to use the shell.

Love the idea Supermeng, I was disappointed that they left out the little entries from Melee, we just have to hope it's in Brawl.

If they cut anyone, here be my votes:

Pichu; he was a Pikachu clone who damaged himself.
Dr. Mario; a heavier Mario clone who shot crack pills instead of fireballs.
Ganondorf's Moves; he needs his sword, dammit!
    Falco's Moves; he deserves them!

These are characters I hope to see:

Ridley; we can't get enough of him.
    Dark Samus; hells yeah.
Sylux or Spire; hey, they said one hunter would be in another game!
    Ike; just plain awesome.
Mordecai; could have a transformation similar to Zelda/Sheik's.

I Is Playing: SUPER SMASH BROS. BRAWL The only game I'll play for a long while.

This is the Japanese trailer looks like the English one!

    This is the EK trailer

I think the samus changing into Zero suit samus under certain circumstances might happen if she hold on to her beam cannon too long, just like the first movie. It would be something like Roys B attack, where if held to the end would be devestating, but she would loose her suit (and thusly her beam cannon) Either that or if she grabs the red smash bros orb (the one that makes mario shoot all those fireballs) and her only way to get it back is to die and respawn, or get it by getting the orb again.

Also the idea of young link changing into adult link is awsome Smilie
