Wii Flying (Hands On)
Anna Sky Houlton :: 12th May 2006 :: Reporting from LA

So it has now been confirmed that Airplane is now part of the Wii Sports package. Airplane allows players to pick up the Wii Remote as if it was a paper plane and fly it in any direction they want.

Airplane will be a launch title along with the other Wii Sports games, golf, baseball and tennis. We aren't quite sure how Airplane quite fits into Wii Sports, but it is fun all the same. It is as easy, if not easier than flying a paper plane as the Wii Remote and therefore the plane react just as you would expect. Choosing whether you do a free fly or make an effort to go through the hoops is up to you.

The short demo available at E3 included both options, so after a quick introduction on how to control the plane by Nintendo we were let loose on Airplane. With a couple of quick movements of your arm you can send the plane soaring into the sky or gliding back towards Earth. With a simple vertical movement you can start the plane in a loop the loop, or a roll to the left or right with your hand makes the plane bank left and right accordingly.

In the demo shown at E3 flying through the hoops resulted in points, of course the more accurate you are at hitting the hoop the more points you're given. But as we said there was no need to go through the hoops, they are there just to add a bit of fun.

Not much is known about the game itself, apart from the fact that it will be bundled with the golf, baseball and tennis games that we have already written about. However the demo shown at E3 is impressive enough to make us buy a Wii.

Sky Workers

With one flying game already being shown, is there room for another?

Unfortunately not at E3 it seems, as Jason Montes, Online Marketing Manager at Hudson Entertainment (publishing arm of Hudson Soft) explained, Sky Workers (working title) just wasn't at a standard that they were happy to show.

According to Montes the graphics are still very much like the GameCube so they felt they couldn't show its full potential at this year's E3. Sadly we weren't even allowed a sneak preview on what it currently looks like. As Montes explained, the game is still in early development and he promises us that when they are ready, they will unveil a beautiful game, fully utilising the Wii Remote to allow gamers to move around the sky and dive bomb when they see fit.

Montes promises to keep us up to date with any developments with Sky Workers, so check back later on in the year to find out what they have planned.

Hudson are working on bringing the classic Bomberman franchise to Wii which should be out later in the year and Bonk's Adventure on Wii's Virtual Console.

I'm guessing that Wii Sports is a working title in this case? Does this mean there's a possibility that the orchestra game could be bundled with it aswell? Smilie

So is "Sky Workers" the name that Hudson has given their "flight game" temporarily?

I don't see why not, it would make sense. You could have a nice little Wii Pack thrown in with the console, containing the Wii Sports titles, the flying game and orchestra and maybe some of the tech demos from E3. That would work really well I think.

I heard each Wii sport game is being worked on by one person! Apparantly there young desighner under Shigsys supervision.

Awesome. Quite frankly that flight game looks absolutely stunning. I suppose it might look a little less smooth close up, but I really doubt it. Simple, but HELLA smooth, and definately effective

I reckon I'd get bored with it pretty quickly. Flying through hoops just isn't enough to keep me interested.

I'm a bit of a pilotwings freak and love these type of games. I know Hudson were working on "flight game" now called sky workers, and the screenshot above was the picture associated with that game. Now another flight game has been put onto Wii Sports, that looks alot like the other games in the package, but also carries the same screenshot as Sky Workers, can someone clarify this please?

Honestly, I don't have a clue what is going on with this one, I'll pop off a couple of emails and see if I can get you an anwser.

Wii sports doesn't really appeal to me, but then again it isn't supposed to. It's for Granny and lil sis.

It's going to be shit and you jolly well know it.

It's the only time i've have actually been intrested in sport games.

any luck on finding out if this is on the wii sports pack?

Less posty, more gamey.

yeah but as we said, that picture is also used as the "flight game" from hudson.

well it looks pretty sweetSmilie

Shigsy & Co. have made a good choice in whacking all this stuff on one disc (should they not change their mind). They all look cool - an excellent way of demo-ing the system, but things like Orchestra, though a nice little aside, could get pretty boring very quicklySmilie

pilotwings is great! the two editions (Snes and N64) will probably the first two things i download from the virtual console.
