Assassin's Creed Showcase 2023

By Sandy Kirchner-Wilson 12.06.2023

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series has been quite quiet recently as they worked on expanding the scope. This showcase promised to reveal info on three main projects the Assassin's Creed teams are working on.

First up we learned more about the upcoming Assassin's Creed VR. Exclusive to Oculus Quest 2, this game promises to make players feel like an assassin as they run, climb and kill their way through 3 time periods. Unlike many other games in the series, this sees the return of Kassandra, Connor and Ezio in new self-contained storylines. These are linked by a current day narrative that promises some intrigue as players infiltrate Abstergo. They showed a teaser for the game which looks very promising, but until we see real gameplay it's hard to tell how this will be on release.

Next was Assassin's Creed Jade, this is a new mobile title. Built in Unreal engine it promises an expansive and ambitious world, one depicting ancient China. In a departure from the series' norm, players can create their own Assassin and traverse a diverse branching narrative. This title is coming to Android and iPhone, players can sign up for beta access from today! Not only does Jade look fantastic but this translation of the series to mobile platforms should open up the field for a whole host of interesting mechanics.

Finally, they delved into the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage. This title promises to return the series to its roots by not only returning to the middle east but also removing the last three games' RPG mechanic in favour of progression and linear story development like the older formula. Ubisoft showed us a full mission's worth of gameplay, revealing what looks to be a fantastic time. Free climbing, planning and tackling missions in interesting ways looks great fun and the combat looks to have evolved quite significantly with loads of new animations and skills. Mirage is set to hit shelves in October and it looks like it will be an interesting return to form for the ageing series.

All three titles offer something different and are looking sharp. If Ubisoft can make these three titles a success, hopefully they'll port Assassin's Creed VR to the PlayStation and PC VR platforms and maybe port Jade to bigger consoles, too. The series looks to have a bright future and it will be amazing to be part of it this year.
