Super Smash Bros. for Wii U may have only been out for just shy of a week in America, but it already appears to be spelling success for Nintendo, as it's now the fastest-selling Wii U game ever.
Joining the 14 million Super Smash Bros. titles already sold, 480,000 copies of the Wii U version were sold on opening weekend (21st-23rd November) in North America, overtaking previous title-holder Mario Kart 8.
Nintendo credits the success to a combination of the franchise's popularity, the demand created by the wait since Brawl and the hype built by Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, critical acclaim, and a fantastic response from fans.
At the time of Nintendo's announcement, Super Smash Bros. Wii U was also officially the highest-rated original game of this generation on Metacritic, tying for first place with Super Mario 3D World with a score of 93. This score has since sunk slightly to 92, but that's still not to be sniffed at. It also has a current user score of 9.1, making it the eighth Wii U game to surpass both a critical score of 85 and a user score of 8.5.
