Miyamoto: Too Much Focus on Dual Screen Wii U on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto has admitted that Nintendo perhaps spent too much time on dual screen Wii U.

Speaking to investors during a Q&A session, Miyamoto noted how "we have to admit that we might have focused too much on the unique uses of two screens." He feels that Nintendo should have put more effort into NFC earlier, but the team will rectify this with "projects that make use of NFC in a variety of unique ways."

Recalling the early stages of the Wii U's lifespan, Miyamoto noted how the team aimed on "focusing on the unique ways to make use of the TV screen and the smaller screen on the GamePad" and trying to use the controller without turning on the TV, to bring an experience closer to Nintendo 3DS/DS.

Games will still take advantage of the second screen, however, with a range of titles planned for release in 2015 and beyond.

Despite a growing userbase and improved sales, Nintendo "are still making efforts to demonstrate the potential of Wii U even today," Miyamoto admitted.

Do you think the Wii U can truly cement itself within the market?

I would love to see more NFC functionality.

As I mentioned in the other comment section, it would be cool if you could create your Mii (if you don't have already one) on your phone and then transfer it to your Wii U via NFC.

I wonder if we'll see NFC based payment systems (like Apple Pay) be added (I thought I read a while ago that they are adding an NFC payment option in Japan)

I thought that the NFC payment in Japan has been happening for a while?

I still think they can make a dual screen option work, they just haven't found the game that it works well with. I still think it could tactically work well with sports games like FIFA, by being able to edit your formation with out the opponent seeing it (although that would require two game pads)

Totally agree with Miyamoto-san here. Sort of the same "feature rot" the PSP suffered until modders cracked it. Glad to see Nintendo is trying to rectify the issue where Sony never has.

One of the best uses for dual screen is actually been Wind Waker, which is why I'm really looking forward to seeing if they're doing the same with the new Zelda. Having your inventory on the bottom screen and conveniently and quickly being able to access it made me play on the gamepad over the Pro Controller. It just made the experience so much better for me.

I don't see much potential for NFC really. I can see its use's elsewhere, but for games its just a arbitrary trigger - they could have done the exact same thing with image recognition.

Dual Screens at least can be used for some asymmetric gameplay during multiplayer (ie, information other players cant see), other then that its just moving your head rather then pressing a button for a map or inventory.
Neither a killer app like the Wiimote was.

For  wii or in general?
Many countries have had NFC payments on android devices for the last two years. Just kinda been stealthy. Technically its an open platform so anyone could implement it, including Nintendo.

Pikmin 3. I know you can play without it, but it's so incredibly more efficient to play with it.

Deus Ex, Pikmin, Wind Waker, ZombieU. These are games made better with dual screens.
