Developer: Wii U Indies Receiving Free Unity License on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Retro City Rampage developer Brian Provinciano has confirmed that Wii U indies receive a free Unity license.

According to Brian Provinciano, indie outfits that are keen to bring projects to the Nintendo hardware "gets a free Unity license", with "no pitching, no negotiation" because of the ability to self-publish on the Wii U and 3DS eShop digital stores.

It's uncertain whether it's literally every developer, but it certainly seems that a majority of studios are being well looked after by Nintendo.

What are your thoughts on the move to better support indie studios working on Wii U projects?

That's awesome, Nintendo! Unity is a great engine. A lot of indies already know their way around Unity pretty well, but I think there's an extra cost to use it on console games.

Hopefully the WiiU will become full of great indie games. Nintendo looks like they're really trying to make it a friendly platform for small teams.

I think this is fantastic and Nintendo are doing a fantastic job at enticing the indie developers to develop for their systems. Sure, Nintendo isn't doing much to gain 3rd party support, but in my opinion, some of these indie games are a lot better than some mainstream games. Smilie
