Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has discussed the reasons that the company are continuing with region locking on the Wii U and 3DS.
With the PS4 and Xbox One allowing for region-free gaming, i.e. the ability to purchase a game worldwide and play without the need for modification, it's left Nintendo as one of the more restrictive hardware manufacturers.
Iwata commented onto the approach, noting how "it might seem like a mid of restriction", however due to each region having its own "cultural acceptance and legal restrictions, as well as different age ratings", Nintendo have had to region-lock the Wii U hardware.
North American Wii U titles aren't playable on a European Wii U, and vice-versa.
Iwata noted how it was "something the entire industry had to 'grapple with' and manage". This was before Microsoft's announcement to go region free, so has left Nintendo in an awkward position.
The petition for a region-free Wii U is still going, with well over 18,400 supporters at time of writing.
