Speaking at E3 in a Developer Direct video, director of Super Mario 3D World Koichi Hayashida discussed the game in more detail.
Announced during Nintendo E3 Direct, the game came to fruition during the development of previous 3D title for Nintendo 3DS, Super Mario 3D Land. As a four player multiplayer game, the new game will borrow mechanics from The New Super Mario Bros. series - bubble when going off-screen and the ability to pick up characters.
However this time each character will use their unique abilities first seen in the classic Super Mario Bros 2.
Whilst the main controllers will be GamePad and Wii Remotes, Super Mario 3D World has also been confirmed to include support for Wii U Pro Controllers.
Alongside working together in multiplayer, there'll also be a competitive element for players to try and gain the highest score possible at the end of each level.
Another new addition is the highlight of today's reveal: Cat Mario. The power-up allows players to venture up walls to access secret areas and shortcuts. There'll also be clear pipes with enemies and coins for an additional challenge.
The GamePad controller will allow players to freeze enemies and platforms to help players and also unlock hidden coins and secrets within each level. The controller's gyro sensors can be used to manipulate the camera for a smooth platforming experience and to also uncover secret stars more easily.
Despite the marmite reaction so far, what are your thoughts on Super Mario 3D Land?
