Masataka Takemoto has responded to fans questioning the absence of a playable Princess Peach in New Super Mario Bros U.
When the original New Super Mario Bros. Wii introduced co-operative play, fans had hoped for a spiritual sequel to NES classic Super Mario Bros 2., where Princess Peach was a playable character.
Back in 2009 the creator of the series, Shigeru Miyamoto, answered the lack of secondary characters like Princess Peach, Princess Daisy and Wario - it was due to the team wanting "every character to play the same way".
The same now applies to New Super Mario Bros U. Players can take on the role of customisable Mii in certain situations, but alas can't float along with Princess Peach. The reason being the same as before, as director Takemoto discussed in the latest issue of Games™:
In Super Mario Bros 2, Princess Peach had her own unique moves and animation. In this series, we want all the players to have the same moves and animations as Mario, and Princess Peach isn't suited for that.
Should the New Super Mario Bros series have more unique abilities for each character, or stick with the unified one-fits-all approach?
