Miyamoto's Tea Table is a Necessary Ritual

Miyamoto

There's no denying that Shigeru Miyamoto has a strong presence at Nintendo - so much so that "upending the tea-table" is a ritual.

In recent interviews and roundtables the creator of The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros and other iconic Nintendo franchises was painted as somewhat of a menace, lurking deep within the shadows whilst the rest of the development team skip around, content with their work on the latest A++ Nintendo game. Just before laying the final pieces down, Miyamoto would leap out, slamming fists on desks, breaking bottles like a drunken hobo and of course, up-ending a coffee table or two. Bloodshed there would be!

That certainly isn't the case, says Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma, whilst being pointed to the head with the Master Sword.

It’s a necessary process, because I find that when he offers that feedback, a lot of the time, he points out things that I, myself, was having trouble with and maybe felt that I couldn’t solve or didn’t have a good time for or felt like we didn’t have the time for and he comes in and really gives focus to everything.

So I’d really like to reinforce that fact that I don’t view the process that people refer to as 'upending the tea table' as something unpleasant. It’s actually quite necessary and useful.

Some might say that a few of Miyamoto's decisions are questionable (even I do sometimes), but I think the fact alone that he's doing that is already extremely helpful for the development team. Why? Because he looks at everything as someone who isn't directly involved in the project and/or from the viewpoint of someone who plays the game and doesn't know/understand things that might feel simple to the developers (or they even take it for granted) because they are working on it.

One way I'm all for this, Miyamoto adds that extra layer of refinement and the "Nintendo" touch, but sometimes I question his direction and restrictions on Zelda.

It doesn't always work out well, in fact i'm convinced Miyamoto has single-handedly ruined games that were expected to be great games.

No if anything he's one of the main members of Nintendo who actually has a good head on his shoulder, Saturo Iwata on the other hand is a taaaaad Power Mad with the success of the Wii, I know he's to blame for most of Nintendo's....odd choices recently.

Example of Miyamoto's level headedness, he supports the idea of community gaming & thinks like Trophies/Achievements & would like to bring online alot stronger to Nintendo...however Iwata does not.

One thing I would LOVE to see is Miyamoto make an M or stronger T rated game, I mean he was on the ORIGINAL team making Eternal Darkness on GameCube AND he actually thought of some of the insanity effects!!!! I'd love to see whatelse he could think of given the creative freedom.Smilie

It is not wise to speak on subjects you do not know all facts about, nor is it smart to judge a game based on looks alone. PSN: Nintendo_Gamer 3DS: 4296-3029-7422

The process of upending the tea-table, as it has been described to us, seems brillent and one that produces very good results - at the cost of time (and money) a bit - but very worth it overall.

As for Miyamoto he is unquestionably a creative genius - one with a strong enough will to take directions other people think are a bad idea.
He also has a strong gameplay-first mentality, which seems oddly rare these days with some many developers thinking more "I'll make a game like the last one, but now in HD!".

The only area he is questionable in is where story is concerned. But others at Nintendo seem to balance him out enough in this.

Pretty sure he already has total freedom at Nintendo to do what he wants actually.
