Nintendo Reveals 2010

Nintendo has revealed the self-published Wii and DS games that sold over a million during 2010. In the latest detailed business breakdown, the company confirmed its best-selling home console and portable releases over the last year. These included games it published for other developers in Western territories, such as Dragon Quest IX and Professor Layton entries, hence their respective sales may look lower than expected due to the lack of Japanese sale figures being included.

Check out the list of top selling titles below, and note how Metroid: Other M was sadly unable to crack the worldwide million mark. Total lifetime sale figures are provided where available:

Wii

  • Wii Sports - 12,190,000 | 75,600,000
  • Wii Sports Resort - 10,210,000 | 26,350,000
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii - 6,580,000 | 21,280,000
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 - 6,150,000 | NEW
  • Wii Fit Plus - 5,090,000 | 17,740,000
  • Wii Party - 5,070,000 | NEW
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns - 4,210,000 | NEW
  • Mario Kart Wii - 3,950,000 | 26,500,000
  • Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition - 1,950,000 | NEW
  • Kirby's Epic Yarn - 1,380,000 | NEW

Nintendo DS

  • Pokémon Black Version/White Version - 5,320,000 | NEW
  • New Super Mario Bros. - 3,730,000 | 26,210,000
  • Pokémon HeartGold Version/SoulSilver Version - 3,320,000 | 11,720,000
  • Mario Kart DS - 2,800,000 | 20,700,000
  • Professor Layton and the Lost Future - 1,870,000 | NEW
  • Art Academy - 1,520,000 | NEW
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem! - 1,150,000 | NEW
  • Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies - 1,020,000 | NEW
Including Japanese sales, Dragon Quest IX is almost at the 5.5 million mark worldwide, whilst the third Professor Layton is around the 2.6 million mark. Some US sales can also be worked out from the above data, such as Kirby's Epic Yarn, which has sold roughly 350,000 units in Japan, showing how strong the series still is elsewhere even without a European release yet. The same goes for the fourth Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which is at a similar sales point in Japan as Kirby and not out in Europe yet.

What are your thoughts on the above numbers, the lack of Metroid: Other M, the pleasing surprise of Dragon Quest IX's success, and the astonishing performance of Pokémon Black/White in Japan alone?

I'm actually really surprised that Donkey Kong Country Returns sold over 4 million copies in such a short period of time. Definitely deserves the sales it got though. Retro Studios did a fantastic job with that game. Smilie

Oh and what the...Pokémon Black/White cracked the 5 million mark already? This is madness!

That's only one country as well. I bet that game is going to sell over 15 million. I'm not sure if it'll beat Red and Blue's 30 million though. I hope it does.
Also New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold over 21 million in a year O_o that's more than Modern Warfare 2 on PS3 and 360 combined.

I'm stunned by the performance of Layton 3 in Europe/US considering people were talking about how the series is in decline. US sales of Kirby and Mario vs DK are HUGE as well! Smilie

They're amazingly high figures. What is all this floating around about the Wii dying and the other consoles taking lead? I can't see much dying with those figures.

I agree 100%. DKCR was platform excellence. Retro Studios did an amazing job.

kirby epic yarn was one of my last titles so excited that it sold so good still waiting for the new kirby

yes I am very surprised by donkey kong country returns and I hope they make a 2d metroid Smilie

New Super Mario Bros Wii was released in Nov. 2009, so it would have sold 21 million in a year and 2 months, which is pretty respectable.

It should be noted that these are the sales since April 2010 (the start of Nintendo's fiscal year) and not the entire calendar year 2010.

Alright, 21 million is still impressive for 1 year and 2 months. I'm pretty sure that's the quickest any single platform title has taken to break the 20 million mark?

Rolling in cash Since 2006.

Whoa, wait a second...so that's 6,580,000 sales from April-December 2010? Meaning it sold 14-15 million from November 2009 - 31st March, 2010? Smilie Smilie Smilie

Okay, wow, simply wow! Smilie

Seeing sales figures over 25 million units is simply shocking. A game is (generally) judged to be a major success if it crosses the million threshold. Selling 25+ times that is astonishing.
