Rare Clears Up DK64 on Virtual Console Confusion on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

It seems there was some confusion as to whether Nintendo was allowed to put Donkey Kong 64 onto their Virtual Console service, over the last weekend. A recent post through Rare's Twitter account stated “What’s with all the ‘let Nintendo put DK64 on Virtual Console’ emails over the weekend? It already belongs to Nintendo, you crazy kids.”

The 'Tweet' clears up any confusion that some fans may have had about the ownership of Donkey Kong 64 and reaffirms that it's Nintendo's decision to add it to the Virtual Consoles library. The likely reasoning to why it hasn't been added to the Virtual Console, so far, is due to Nintendo neglecting the service recently, especially with Nintendo 64 games.

Did you have any confusion about the ownership of DK64?

Dunno where people were getting the idea that Rare own DK64. All Donkey Kong rights are Nintendo's, whether Rare made the games in the series or not.

Hm the virtual console thing neglected - figures, I just don't want to buy the same game twice.

Wiiware is fun, vc is fun but expensive. I'd buy dk64 though Smilie

I'm sure that Jetpac game in DKC64 is owned by Rare though.

True, wonder if Nintendo would put in one of their own arcade games in place of that?

I know the game is owned by Nintendo, but I believe all the things that Rare added are theirs, like the kremlins. I believe that's the reason DKCR doesn't have them or any other Kongs. If Retro put them in, it would be a huuuuuge slap in the face to Rare.

I'm not so sure about that. There were kremlings in DK Barrel Blast (Jet Race). Are you saying we're never going to see King K. Rool again? I seriously doubt that.

King K. Rool was in Donkey Konga, from what I can remember and he was also in King of Swing, Jungle Climber and Mario Super Sluggers. I'm sure Dixie Kong was in Donkey Konga 2, as well.

I do find it odd that they seem so restricted with Donkey Kong Country Returns though.

Perhaps they're neglecting the VC because of poor sales? Perhaps the sales are so poor because the prices are so high?

I for one have never bought a single VC game. And now that my Wii (almost?) broke down, I don't think I'll ever have the guts to buy downloadable content that I can't transfer.

People are confused over the rights to DK64? Smilie Donkey Kong is a Nintendo created IP, therefore it's theirs. lol Banjo-Kazooie on the other hand, isn't. Smilie Or Perfect Dark. Or Killer Instinct, Jet Force Gemini, Blast Corps, Conker... DAMN YOU, RARE!!!

...regardless, Ninty should've been stepping up the VC not skimming it down. DK64 should've been on there a LONG time ago. As well as many other games, but I digress.

...before I blow a blood vessel...

Chance favors the prepared mind.

Maybe they are holding it back to celebrate the release of the new Donkey Kong Country game? Or maybe it's just too big for the store, it's a big game.

Either way I'm not too bothered 'cause I still have my N64 hooked up to a TV and I have a copy of Donkey Kong 64! Smilie

Yea, but those are spin offs, not the main series. I think gamesradar said something about that.

Oh, and I just figured out Rare was a "work for hire", so Nintendo can use all the kremlings, kongs etc.

That's that, then. All the Kongs I know have been used since DK64 too. Dixie was in Mario Super Sluggers aswell

Spin-offs or not, they're Nintendo games, and no company could get away with using another company's IPs. Nintendo wouldn't have been able to use kremlings in any game if they were property of Rare, whether that's Donkey Konga or the next DK Country game. The fact that they have shows kremlings are all Nintendo's.

Funky Kong was in Mario Kart Wii and let's not forget all those DK trophies in Brawl.

That's an interesting article though bornforthis43. Thanks for posting it up.
