Kid Icarus creator Masahiro Sakurai recently revealed that whilst coming up with ideas for a new 3DS game, he also considered a new Star Fox.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata pitched the new hardware to his fellow designer and past colleague before 3D had become a defining feature, with the freedom to let Sakurai "do whatever" he wanted. Sakurai came up with a game that combines both air and ground combat, deciding on Kid Icarus as his next project.
However that said, according to Siliconera, another franchise he thought of doing was Star Fox.
But the problem with Star Fox was that - and you’ll see this when you see the trailer for Kid Icarus - is that the game design incorporates a lot of different views. For example, flying and shooting sideways or turning around and shooting behind and I felt that there were some restrictions with Star Fox in this regard. With Pit, there is a certain amount of flexibility that is allowed and makes a better fit for this gameplay.
The 3DS won't be without the much loved shooter, with a remake of Lylat Wars/Star Fox 64 doing battle with Andross once again on the new portable.
