Nintendo DS Successor Outputs in 3D on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

After months of speculation Nintendo has confirmed a new addition to the DS family - a portable that lets you play 3D games with the naked eye.

Upgraded graphics, sound and the like are expected, and the addition of 3D without the need for glasses seems to be the icing on the Nintendo cake. According to VG247 Satoru Iwata confirmed the new hardware in an investor report, revealing that it will continue the DS branding, tentatively named "3DS".

The 3DS is said to be backward compatible with the original DS games, and Nintendo are aiming to have it out in the Japanese wilderness by March 2011.

More details and the official reveal will come at this year's E3 Expo in June.

Update 1: A few new details from Nikkei have suggested that the console will have force feedback, bright and crisp screens, improved battery life and wireless connectivity. It might even include the rumoured accelerometer for a healthy dose of tilt-action.

What's even more interesting is that reports have claimed a "3D control stick" for those wanting a bit more precision.

Update 2: Cheif Spokesman Ken Toyoda has confirmed that 3DS will be playable at E3 (so expect the grand unveiling too). He also explained why 3DS was given an announcement before this years E3 "We wanted to give the gaming industry a head's up about what to expect from Nintendo at E3. We'll invite people to play with the new device then".

What do you think of having 3D games at your fingertips without the need for glasses - can it work, or will this be Virtual Boy mark 2?

I'm incredibly excited about this. 3D with glasses didn't appeal to me, but this is what I wanted. Great stuff. I'm really looking forward to seeing the big reveal.

Big N dont care about HD wii but maybe a Wii 3D coming if this is ture

Nah - I still think HD Wii, 3DTVs don't have a high enough adoption rate yet. Exactly the reason why they didn't go HD at the time of Wii's release. Within the next year I would predict that a Wii successor, at least on the level of PS3/360, will be announced, undoubtedly with some extra new thing added in. Whatever they do, it'll be soon - they're not going to have a handheld and a console with similar power on the market at the same time.

I can't see how they are going to do 3D without glasses...

..Ahh! Maybe they'll have a camera in the front which will track your face and change the angle on screen accordingly? That would be quite cool because you could look 'round corners in third person games.

I would think that they're going to put the 'glasses' over the screens themselves rather than applied to the face, so multi-layered screens. I think a camera is a given if it's backwards compatible with DS/DSi, so yeah, I reckon that's part of it. A problem with 3D is the lack of a fixed point for the viewer, but that problem is solved by a handheld; the player will generally be a foot or so away from the system, directly in front of it.

It's supposed to be different from that camera technology used on DSi, too - that doesn't use an accelerometer, just the DSi camera/s and tilting, it uses face tracking. Motion is rumoured for this, though...

I hope there will be some good titles for it. I'm especially worried about:

Golden Sun 3
Pokémon 5
The 4 remaining Layton games

Are they all going to be cancelled or have their 4 remaining localizations cancelled just because of this new machine? Because I'm REALLY looking forward to them :/

I hope this isn't a mistake Nintendo...

Nintendo know exactly what they're doing. These games won't be cancelled. Layton is popular and will make it out fine. Golden Sun 3 will probably come out as a standard DS title. Pokémon - I'm calling it now that this is a 3DS title. They always release new generations with new systems. It may be dual-compatible with the current DS, though, with there being a massive existing audience. Phoenix is probably correct - extra stuff for 3DS, but equally I wouldn't be surprised to see it as an exclusive launch title to bring 3DS out with a bang; works well with the fact that Pokémon 5 is supposed to be out by the end of this year and 3DS is supposed to be out in one territory by the end of 2010, the rest by March 2011. Instant userbase, right there. I don't think it's worth worrying, really, it's all backwards compatible anyhow. They'll probably do it like GBA/DS, DS/DSi.

Wario Ware 3D almost guaranteed for launch I reckon.

This should definitely help get some PSP ports/upgrades at least...

See this is my #1 worry. Ports.
Either it'll be port city like the Wii (which is a bad thing) or it'll be lovely remakes and original content like the DS.

Really hope it's the latter.

Remember when the GBA came out? We got about four billion SNES ports, but we also got one of the bet generations of original games imagineable. I suspct the same will come of 3DS. It's pretty much a given that we'll be getting some ports (especially if the rumours that this thing is at least as powerful as the Gamecube hold true) but I'm sure there'll be some epic original games, too. This is the handheld market, after all. People don't want to carry shovelware around with them.

I seriously doubt it will be another Virtual Boy-type failure. Although, when I read the news this morning I instantly thought of Virtual Boy Smilie

However, Nintendo would never make that mistake twice. Also, Nintendo knows that it completely owns the handheld market; they would not give up on that. So they must feel strongly about going in this direction.

I would love for the 3DS to actually have Gamecube graphics, or even more power.

Let's hope they do this right and not mess up their biggest market!

this is 3d tech but with touch. that is weird. the newest sci fi mag is out with the new doctor who on it. its a classic 3d cover i went to touch it and there is a weird mixture of signals to deal with. plus all 3d tech i have witnessed old tech or new looks like flat planes at different depths but it could be fun.

by the way im using my wii for internet coz laptop is broken so how am i doing? no flash java or pdf support. vry basic internet access. could be worse. could have spent 600 for an ipad with the same probs.

Something I think would be quite cool - but I'm not sure how feasible it is - would be...if we're getting things 'coming out of the screens', then having to tap the screen past those things, it's going to take something out of the immersion. But what if, using the camera to track the stylus and what it's touching and cross-referencing that with the data about what's being 'projected' at that point at that time, you could 'touch' the things coming out of the screens by moving your stylus in the airspace above the system as well...?

My head is spinning!

The potential for all of this is incredible. Its hard not to get too excited, but I feel wowed already. Can't wait for E3.

My initial thought is something like this! If they can get the 3DS to recognise where your eyes are (instead of lights). I'm no expert but I think it's all relatively simple tech now.

I soo hope I'm right.

Well they might be able to incorporate their stylus vibration feedback into that?

(Recycle) The Possibilities are endless!

Is anything left to E3 anymore? I can only see Sony or Microsoft announcing something similar for their handhelds or consoles, although i heard a lil dicky bird that there will be a firmware update for the PS3 to update the blu-ray player into a 3DBluRay player.

To be honest, it would easily have Gamecube graphics by now, surely, i mean look at the PSP's graphics! If it wasnt matching that or bettering it then i could imagine many would be dissapointed.

I think the screens might be of the same texture as lil crappy 3D moving images on cereal boxes and crappy little toys. That sort of rough corse surface. I think ive had too many drinks to explain my self properly tonight so i just hope that all of that made sense!

Okay, never seen that video...but wow, that is VERY cool indeed! I also love the look of the DSiWare game from Nintendo/Good Feel (the team behind Wario Shake Dimension).

Before anyone jumps to wild conclusions, just remember to stay grounded in physical reality. Without glasses, it is impossible for objects to "pop out" of the screen. Head tracking may be achievable with the camera, but tracking eyes will be much too expensive and prone to limiting factors such as lighting or hair in the way.

I don't want to sound too pessimistic, but the 3D may be incorporated as much as motion controls are incorporated in the Wii, meaning that most parts of the game will be 2D with some special effects or minigames in 3D. The 3D aspect may be limited to a tilt sensor (to provide a more reliable way of tracking than a tiny camera) which must be calibrated every time before any 3D portions of the game are activated.

I'm not saying that it will be like that, but at least keep it in mind so you are not disappointed and blame Nintendo for misleading you.

Edit:
What White Ranger is talking about is lenticular prints, which produces a different picture depending on the viewing angle. A more recent technology is the microlens and associated integral imaging (look them up on wikipedia) which wouldn't be impossible to put on a DS, but I assume would be far too expensive to incorporate in the DS. However, this would allow the screen to do the "work" physically rather than the processor.

( Edited 24.03.2010 02:32 by PMD )

Based on some articles coming out now, it seems that any sort of head tracking is unlikely and the new device will use "parallax barrier" LCD screens, which work similar to lenticular or microlens displays, but without the light scattering. Nintendo made a deal with Sharp, who makes parallax barrier screens.

i want a game with 3D naked ladies u can touch LOL!!!

Did you make that Jump_button, because that is awesome.

Nah, he nicked it from Neogaf, like this one;

Given that none of the old rumours mentioned 3d, which is apparently the most significant feature, I don't think you can trust them at all.
Just guess work.

Yay someone doing 3D right and getting rid of the fucking retarded glasses.

FYI, a large percentage of the population where glass's anyway.
Also, in every system thus far glass's based 3D looks suppiour to ones without. Now, on a handheld, it might work better as its just one person viewing a screen and the limited viewing angle isnt a problem.
But polarised 3D is still the best thing we got elsewhere.

Yeah exatly, and if you already wear glasses wouldn't those people be even more irritated putting ANOTHER pair on top of there existing pair?

It's still retarded advertising TV's as 3D but then saying you need glasses to take advantage of it, seriously how many people will actually bother with that?

Have a movie night with some friends

Ok guys remember your glasses, woops I forgot mine..

Children will obviously loose them, it's bollocks.
Until they make large screen 3D tv's withought the need of glasses it will remain in large a waste of time and a gimmick mainly for cinmea theaters.

It just hit me that the DS2 is coming out XD I'm so f*cking excited.

Oh yeah good analogy

I believe there's still a considerable feature to this handheld we're not aware of yet. After all, Nintendo let the DS original be known to the world in exactly the same method even earlier before E3 that year, and not even once did they mention a Touchscreen.

Good point, They will probably innovate again, but I don't see where they can go from the touch screen? Touching in 3D space? A little bit predictable....Roll on June 15th....

Well for all the games on any system, I only buy a handful of the best of the best each year.

So shovelware or no shovelware, if this thing can get me a better experience than the gamecube did at its top it has got me interested in at least the star games on it.
